Teachers' union unhappy with B.C. class-size regulations

VANCOUVER ? B.C. teachers who have more than 30 students in their classes next year may opt for extra pay, additional preparation time, more professional-development money or extra funds for classroom supplies, according to new class size and compensation regulations.

But such benefits won?t be available when classes are part of an alternate program, work study or a specialty academy. Nor will they be offered for music, performing arts, Planning 10, board-authorized leadership and online classes.

The regulations include a formula for calculating extra pay, which takes into account the teacher?s salary and time worked. An average full-time teacher would receive roughly $2,000 to $2,500 for every student beyond 30. Teachers-on-call are not eligible.

The B.C. Teachers? Federation has dubbed the plan ?cash for kids? and says it would do nothing to improve learning conditions for students.

Tara Ehrcke, president of the Greater Victoria Teachers? Association, said the plan makes it cheaper for a school district to overload classes than hire more teachers. ?If an extra 29 students can be spread around into oversized classes, that will be $2,000 less than the salary of an additional teacher,? she says on her blog. Furthermore, the exemptions mean classes such as art and music could have more than 50 students, she states.

Class size and composition rules were changed when the government passed Bill 22 last month to bring an end to teacher job action.

A final report under the old rules was released last week. It indicates that the average Grade 4-7 class had almost 26 students at the start of this school year while the average secondary school class had 25. The smallest classes were in the smallest school district, Stikine, where the average was 11.2 students in Grades 4-7 and 12. 5 in Grades 8-12. The largest intermediate average was in Langley at 27.6 students and the largest high school average was in Greater Victoria at 27.3.

The average class size in kindergarten was 18.5 students and the average in Grades 1-3 was 20.6. Student numbers in those grades are capped at 22 and 24 respectively. In all other grades, schools were encouraged to create classes with 30 or fewer students and no more than three special-needs students. When those limits were exceeded, the school principal and the superintendent had to attest that the class organization was appropriate for student learning.

With Bill 22, the limit on the number of special-needs students per class was removed.

The 2011-12 report shows that 3,188 of 64,827 intermediate and secondary classes had more than 30 students and 12,529 had more than three special-needs students. That compares to 3,627 classes with more than 30 students and 12,118 with more than three special-needs students during the previous year.

Katy Perry Gets Medieval On Kids' Choice Awards

Following her performance, she is presented with the blimp for Favorite Voice From an Animated Movie.

When Katy Perry debuted "Part of Me" at the Grammys last month, music fans couldn't help but focus on the new song's vicious lyrics obviously pointed at a no-good ex (was it ex-husband Russell Brand? Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy?). But at Saturday's (March 31) Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, Perry's young fans were only focused on the song's pulsing beat and catchy chorus. Even when Katy is getting serious, there's always fun to be had.

Case in point, her entrance: Perry descended onto the stage by flying over the crowd from the ceiling, brandishing a sword. She was joined onstage by dancers in medieval garb, which included puffy shirts and dresses covered in armor. When the bridge kicked in, Perry lifted a gigantic shield in front of her with a glowing heart in the center.

While the medieval theme and dancing could have turned dramatic, especially when a dancer had his head and arms locked in a torture device, Perry got her hands on a pie and smashed it in his face.

Following the performance, host Will Smith presented Perry with the Favorite Voice From an Animated Movie award for her work as Smurfette in "The Smurfs."

"Thank you so very much!" Katy told the crowd. "Listen: The only reason why I'm still here today — and remember this — is because I've never grown up! Thank you so much for this. I love you, and I can't wait to do 'Smurfs 2.' "

This wasn't Katy's first time at the Kids' Choice Awards: Back in 2010, she was the unlucky target of a green slime shower. "I can't see anything," she exclaimed after emerging from a puddle of the slimy goo. "Why does it taste like boogers?"

Perry recently debuted the combat-heavy clip for "Part of Me" on MTV. In the video, she gets down and dirty with Marines as she works out her anger against the aforementioned no-good ex. So why did Perry choose a military theme?

"It's an affirmation of strength, so I wanted to go the strongest route I ever could," she said of the song. "Literally, I was like, 'I'm gonna join the service. I'm gonna join the Marines.' We used only Marines. ... For three days, I was a wannabe Marine, which was so difficult."

Metformin appeared to slow prostate cancer growth | Machines Like ...

The use of metformin in men with prostate cancer before prostatectomy helped to reduce certain metabolic parameters and slow the growth rate of the cancer, according to the results of a phase II study.

Anthony M. Joshua, M.B.B.S., Ph.D., staff medical oncologist at the Princess Margaret Hospital, University Health Network in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, presented the data at the AACR Annual Meeting 2012, held March 31 - April 4.

Metformin is the most commonly prescribed medication for diabetes. Prior laboratory research has suggested that metformin may also help to improve prognosis in patients with prostate cancer by slowing the growth of the cancerous cells.

To follow up on the laboratory clues, Joshua and colleagues evaluated 22 men with confirmed prostate cancer who had been assigned up to 500 mg of metformin three times a day prior to undergoing prostatectomy.

"This gave us the ability to compare what the prostate cancer looked like when it was first diagnosed to what it looked like when the prostate cancer was removed from the body," said Joshua. "We were able to directly measure the effect of metformin on the prostate cancer."

Patients were assigned metformin for a median duration of 41 days. During that time, none of the men reported grade 3 adverse events, and all of them underwent prostatectomy with no adverse effect related to use of metformin.

The researchers found that metformin significantly reduced fasting glucose, insulin growth factor-1, body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio.

In addition, "although these are preliminary results, metformin appeared to reduce the growth rate of prostate cancer in a proportion of men," Joshua said. "Also, it appeared to reduce one of the main growth pathways that may have contributed to the overall growth of the tumor."

These results may have implications for men with prostate cancer who also have diabetes or early undiagnosed diabetes and for men with prostate cancer whose tumors have characteristics that make them sensitive to metformin, according to Joshua.

"This research builds on the hypothesis that metformin has a role in prostate cancer," he said. "Exactly what that role will be will depend on the results of the analysis currently being completed by our study team and others worldwide."

Joshua is particularly interested in better defining the precise mechanism of action and the subpopulation of patients with prostate cancer for whom metformin has the potential to improve outcomes.
