World's largest telescope underway, scientists definitely observe big bang

Once again astronomers are observing formative explosions, but this time a little bit closer to home. Three million cubic feet of planet earth is being blasted from the Chilean Andes as work on what will be the world's largest telescope begins. The location is the Carnegie Institution's Las Campanas Observatory, and the project is a collaboration between South Korean, Australian and American institutions to create the Giant Magellan Telescope. The first mirror segment is just being completed, and is so precise, it matches its optical prescription to within a millionth of an inch. The project will cost $700 million once complete, small change we say for a chance to glimpse light from the edge of the Universe.

Apparently Jessica Simpson's naked, pregnant body on the cover of April's Elle magazine has not been well received by those at Safeway supermarkets.

The attention-grabbing photo of Jessica Simpson nude has been covered up with pieces of cardboard and/or turned around, the Arizona Daily Star reports.

A spokeswoman for the grocery chain said it made the move to censor the cover following "multiple complaints" about the Fashion Star mentor's photo.

Simpson said in an interview that that Demi Moore and Britney Spears-like fully nude, pregnant cover pic was all her idea. Well, and their idea. But in this case:

"They didn't even ask me to do that," she said on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM radio show. "It was my idea. It kind of just seemed a natural thing for me to do."

"I'm like 170 pounds and I wanted to pose nude," she explained.

"I try to be like 110. It's funny to be at your heaviest and feel the most confident. I just take such pride in being a mom! I just love my body more than ever now."

Top-seeded Stanford women beat S Carolina 76-60

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ? Nnemkadi Ogwumike wants one final shot at an NCAA championship.

She would like nothing more than to carry her Cardinal to another Final Four, and she had 39 points and 10 rebounds in top-seeded Stanford's 76-60 victory over No. 5 seed South Carolina on Saturday night to get one win closer.

Now, Duke is all that stands in the way of a trip to Denver and the program's fifth straight Final Four.

Ogwumike shot 14 for 22 and made 11 of 12 free throws, and Toni Kokenis added 12 points and seven boards as the Cardinal (34-1) ran their school-record winning streak to 31 games with a hard-fought victory.

"I don't want any game to be my last, except for next weekend," she said. I play for my teammates. I play for my coaches. It's been one crazy journey. To be out there and know how bad teams want to beat us, that's motivation enough."

Markeshia Grant scored 14 points and made four 3-pointers and La'Keisha Sutton had 18 for scrappy South Carolina (25-10), which hung tough in its first regional semifinals since 2002 despite a significant height disadvantage.

Stanford will play Monday night against Duke, which beat St. John's 74-47 in Saturday's first game at the Save Mart Center. The Cardinal have a large contingent of fans who made the three-hour drive from the Bay Area.

"Nneka just would not be denied," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said.

The Hall of Fame coach topped her former U.S. Olympic star, Dawn Staley. The two captured a gold medal together in the 1996 Atlanta Games, with VanDerveer taking a year off from Stanford to coach the Americans.

But it wasn't as easy as Stanford usually has it ? South Carolina's guards regularly answered on the offensive end after baskets by Stanford. The Cardinal received their biggest push since a 74-71 overtime victory over rival California at home in Maples Pavilion on Jan. 28.

"I thought we played as well as we could play considering who we were playing and the type of night Nneka Ogwumike said," Staley said. "My hat goes off to our players who fought so hard and gave all they had."

Nneka Ogwumike took over down the stretch, even playing with three fouls for the final 17:20.

She scored on a leaping layin off a reverse pivot with 9:23 left to put her team up 56-48. She hit one free throw with 8:54 to play, then drew a charge on Ashley Bruner moments later before scoring over Bruner for an 11-point lead of 59-48. Staley quickly called timeout.

South Carolina tried to mix it up defensively against Ogwumike to get her out of sync.

"Looking at the stat sheet it doesn't look like anything worked," Staley said. "She had a tremendous night. We made her work for every 39 of her points. When someone has it going on like that there's not much you can do but give her different looks."

Kokenis had a steal in the backcourt and drove the full length of the floor for a three-point play with 5:10 remaining to make it 68-54 and cap a 9-0 Stanford run.

Joslyn Tinkle banked in a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded to end the first half with Stanford leading 36-30 despite getting points from only four players. Nneka Ogwumike shot 7 for 12, while the rest of the team went 7 of 20.

The Cardinal got a couple of scares with Chiney Ogwumike going down twice. She hit the ground awkwardly on her braced right knee on a first-half rebound attempt. She was undercut by South Carolina's Courtney Newton, but the sophomore stayed in the game after being helped up by her big sister.

With 15:11 remaining, she drove the lane was bumped by Ebony Wilson. She lay on the ground in pain, grabbing to stretch her troublesome right knee while holding her sister's hand. Chiney Ogwumike sat down and iced the knee before returning less than a minute later.

"They were relentless inside. They outrebounded us, which isn't very common. It's something we'll have to watch tape about," Nneka Ogwumike said. "I knew in my heart we were going to win. I could see it in our eyes."

The talented Ogwumike sister tandem combined to score their team's first 10 points and the Cardinal led by as many as 10 in the first half.

South Carolina advanced to the NCAA's round of 16 for the third time in program history and first under fourth-year coach Staley. And this group looked drastically different from the Gamecocks team that took a 70-32 whipping on Stanford's home floor in Maples Pavilion on Nov. 26, 2010. That day, Staley asked VanDerveer to spend a few minutes with the South Carolina players in the locker room after the Hall of Famer earned career victory No. 797.

The Gamecocks beat six ranked opponents this season but couldn't pull off the upset this time.

"I think we were a resilient group just coming in four years ago from our 10-18 season to the Sweet Sixteen," Sutton said. "I definitely feel this is something special at the University of South Carolina. I definitely think we'll be back every year from now on."

VanDerveer eliminated Staley from the NCAA tournament again. The Cardinal beat Staley during her college career at Virginia in the NCAA semifinals in both 1990 and '92, and Stanford went on to win it all both times. But VanDerveer's teams haven't captured a title since '92.

Likely WNBA No. 1 pick Nneka Ogwumike hopes to do her part to change that.

"Whoever has the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft, they're going to get a nice solid player who's going to help them right away," Staley said.

Geologists discover new class of landform -- on Mars

An odd, previously unseen landform could provide a window into the geological history of Mars, according to new research by University of Washington geologists.

They call the structures periodic bedrock ridges (and they use the abbreviation PBRs to evoke a favorite brand of beer). The ridges look like sand dunes but, rather than being made from material piled up by the wind, the scientists say the ridges actually form from wind erosion of bedrock.

"These bedforms look for all the world like sand dunes but they are carved into hard rock by wind," said David Montgomery, a UW professor of Earth and space sciences. It is something there are not many analogs for on Earth."

He believes the ridges, while still bedrock, are composed of a softer, more erodible material than typical bedrock and were formed by an unusual form of wind erosion that occurs perpendicular to the prevailing wind rather than in the same direction.

He contrasts the ridges with another bedrock form called a yardang, which has been carved over time by headwinds. A yardang has a wide, blunt leading edge in the face of the wind, and its sides are tapered so that it resembles a teardrop.

In the case of periodic bedrock ridges, Montgomery believes high surface winds on Mars are deflected into the air by a land formation, and they erode the bedrock in the area where they settle back to the surface.

Spacing between ridges depends on how long it takes for the winds to come back to the surface, and that is determined by the strength of the wind, the size of the deflection and the density of the atmosphere, he said.

The discovery is important because if the ridges were actually created by wind depositing material into dunes, "you're not going to have information from any prior history of the material that is exposed at the surface," he said.

"But if it's cut into instead, and you're looking at the residual of a rock that has been eroded away, you can still get the history of what was happening long ago from that spot," Montgomery said.

"You could actually go back and look at some earlier eras in Martian history, and the wind would have done us the favor of exposing the layers that would have that history within it," he said. "There are some areas of the Martian surface, potentially large areas, that up until now we've thought you couldn't really get very far back into Mars history geologically."

Montgomery is the lead author of a paper documenting the discovery published online March 9 in the Journal of Geophysical Research, a journal of the American Geophysical Union. Coauthors are Joshua Bandfield, a UW research assistant professor of Earth and space sciences, and Scott Becker, who did the work as an undergraduate in Earth and space sciences and has received his degree. The work was funded in part by NASA.

There could be landforms on Earth that are somewhat similar to periodic bedrock ridges, Montgomery said, but to date there's nothing exactly like it, largely because there are not many bedrock landscapes on Earth in which wind is the main erosion agent.

"There are very few places ? where you have bedrock exposed at the surface where there isn't also water that is carving valleys, that's shaping the topography," he said. "Mars is a different planet, obviously, and the biggest difference is the lack of fluvial action, the lack of water working on the surface."

The hype surrounding The Hunger Games has been unavoidable. Based on the incredibly popular series of young adult novels, Lionsgate is clearly hoping for a franchise of Twilight-like proportions (although THG is, from what we hear, very different to the sparkly vampire series). We?ve never read the books so we were excited to see what it was that had connected with so many people.The future. America has become the state of Panem. Every year two tributes are chosen from each district to compete in The Hunger Games, a televised battle to the death. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) from District 12 volunteers to replace her sister, and is thrust into a world in which the tributes are groomed and promoted as reality TV competitors before they have to battle each other while the world watches. Can Katniss keep her integrity and win the games?As we haven?t read the books, we can?t do a compare and contrast. We can only criticise the film as a stand-alone entity. With that out of the way, let?s begin. The world of the film is an enjoyably strange hybrid. There?s the metropolis in which the games are created with its camp and insane costumes, wigs, and make-up. But the film starts in the outlying districts, where the people are hungry; bartering the animals they catch themselves and offering themselves up to ?The Reaping?. So while we have Stanley Tucci in a blue wig and false teeth, Wes Bentley wearing a fantastically intricate beard, and Elizabeth Banks made up like a doll that?s already had too many coats of paint, there?s also Lawrence hunting and killing small animals like she?s just stepped off the set of Winter?s Bone.It?s impossible to understate the importance of Lawrence to this film. At 140-odd minutes, the film is overlong and it takes itself incredibly seriously even as the (slightly) more outlandish science-fiction elements creep in. The committed, grounded and intense performance from Lawrence keeps the audience onside and involved in the story during any lags. The film works best during its first half, as Katniss and fellow tribute Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) struggle to reconcile their preparations for survival with the need to be appealing enough for sponsorship. It is, of course, a pointed dig at reality TV, where making a connection with the audience at home and making friends with the people in charge is just as important as any skills you may have or how nice a person you are. Once the film takes the tributes to the woods and pits them against each other, it settles into a slightly over-familiar kill-or-be-killed but don?t forget who you are scenario. Lawrence is never less than magnetic but there?s a definite choppiness to the editing of the fight sequences which makes it clear where the cuts were and took us out of the film. Having said that, some of the violence is pretty tough for a 12A. While it doesn?t go off the rails, the second half of the film is noticeably less gripping than the first.Lawrence aside, Woody Harrelson is also on excellent form as the bitter but good-hearted former champion, Tucci has a blast as the beaming TV show host, and Banks and Lenny Kravitz do good work as District 12?s image consultants. Hutcherson (The Kids Are Alright) is solid enough but makes less of an impression as the weaker Peeta, Donald Sutherland murmurs menacingly as the evil President Snow, and Bentley gives a solid turn as the games master with some nasty tricks up his sleeve.It?s not a particularly unfamiliar story, but it?s an interesting and entertaining spin that manages to recall a lot of 1980s survival science fiction (and surpasses some of it) and, in Katniss Everdeen, gives us a heroine worth rooting for. It?s a bit long and it does loosen its grip on the audience during the second half, but it?s an often very tense thriller that is certainly a refreshing break from the typical teenage blockbuster. Verdict: The Hunger Games doesn?t quite deliver on its promise but it?s an interesting, entertaining and well-acted blockbuster that?s impressively bleak for a younger audience.

Anti-Kony campaign in turmoil after filmmaker's meltdown

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The public meltdown of the man behind the viral Kony 2012 video has thrown his campaign into turmoil even as the film succeeded in turning the world's attention to capturing an elusive and brutal Ugandan warlord.

Jason Russell, whose 30-minute video sensation shone a spotlight on Joseph Kony's use of child soldiers in Uganda, was taken by police to a hospital last week after suffering what doctors described as a brief psychotic break.

Videos posted online showed him pacing back and forth on the sidewalk, naked, in broad daylight, in an episode certain to raise questions over the viability of Russell's Invisible Children group.

"You always hear people say, 'I'm so stressed out, I'm about to go crazy,'" said Robert Thompson, Director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University. "Still, the story of all this happening and then he literally is wigging out is very odd."

He said the episode could serve to divert attention from the warlord to Russell: "Now whenever you see a Kony story, it's about the guy, not Kony."

In downtown San Diego, Invisible Children's office, once decorated with loud posters and bustling with activity, has been locked up.

Visitors are now cleared through a newly opened ground floor office unfurnished but for two chairs, a pair of Apple laptops and a table occupied by two polite young women who spend their days pointing to a sign that directs reporters to the email address of a New York-based public relations firm.

The bubbly women said that Russell, whose video has been seen nearly 85 million times on YouTube, was "awesome" but declined to provide their names.

Russell's fellow Invisible Children co-founders, Laren Poole and Bobby Bailey, declined through a spokeswoman to be interviewed, as did the organization's CEO, Ben Keesey.

Keesey has attributed Russell's breakdown to the severe emotional toll of the previous two weeks in which the Kony video went viral. Even as the video drew attention to the warlord, it also sparked criticism over what some called its misleading portrayal of current events in Uganda.

Russell's wife Danica has said that her husband would remain under hospital care for a number of weeks, and might not be able to fully return to his work at Invisible Children for months.

A spokeswoman would not say how or if Invisible Children plans to proceed with a planned April 20 day of action, in which viewers of the video were asked to paper their homes, lawns and cities with Kony posters to turn him into a household name.

RENEWED EFFORTS TO HUNT KONY

While the fate of the group that brought Kony into the spotlight may be uncertain, experts say that may be largely irrelevant because it has already served the purpose of persuading millions to care, and policy decisions were taking shape.

"It's rare that we have literally millions of Americans calling for more engagement in Africa," Senator Chris Coons, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on African Affairs, told Reuters in an interview, noting that his subcommittee normally received far less attention than it has since the Kony 2012 video was released.

Kony, accused of terrorizing northern Uganda for two decades, is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes. He is accused of abducting children to use as fighters and sex slaves and is said to like hacking off limbs.

"I was both amused, pleased and proud that all three of my kids asked me what I was doing to stop Joseph Kony," Coons said.

Attempts by regional forces and foreign troops to corner the fugitive warlord have so far failed. But on Friday, the African Union said it would launch a 5,000-strong force in South Sudan to hunt him.

The African Union move is in addition to 100 U.S. military advisers President Barack Obama sent to the region last year to help Ugandan forces track Kony down.

Coons, who introduced a resolution in the Senate on Wednesday condemning Kony, stressed that any U.S. role would be to support the efforts of local troops.

WRONG TARGET?

But the Lord's Resistance Army is already a shadow of its former self, numbering around 250 members, according to a December 2011 report published by the Social Science Research Council.

Some 200 of those members are with Joseph Kony in the Central African Republic, and another 50 are in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the report said.

The video Russell directed, interspersing shots of his own young son with those of suffering Ugandan children, depicts children walking into the city center of the Uganda city of Gulu at night to avoid capture.

But active violence like that hasn't been seen in northern Uganda in seven or eight years, according to Laura Seay, a professor at Morehouse College who studies conflict and community in central Africa.

"LRA victims are depicted as absolutely helpless," Seay said, characterizing the portrayal as neocolonial and saying the film may have mischaracterized the nature of Gulu, where the number of children taking nightly refuge dwindled after a truce between government forces and the LRA in 2006.

"You have coffee shops and pizza places in Gulu. It's absolutely peaceful," she said.

Seay suggested those whose interest in the region had been piqued by the Invisible Children campaign turn their attention next to more active warlords in the region such as Bosco Ntaganda, nicknamed "The Terminator," who is also wanted by the ICC for war crimes.

Like Kony, Ntaganda is accused of conscripting child soldiers under age 15 to carry arms and fight in open conflict.

"He walks freely," Seay said. "I know where he eats dinner every night."
