Taxes 'not like church plate' | The Sun |News|Politics

TREASURY Secretary Danny Alexander yesterday warned major firms they must pay their full amount of tax ? saying it should not be ?like a church plate? where they donate what they like voluntarily.

His demand came after Starbucks last week promised to pay ?20million over the next two years.

MPs had criticised the US coffee giant ? along with Google and Amazon ? for avoiding UK tax.

Mr Alexander, appearing on BBC1?s The Andrew Marr Show alongside ex- Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, said: ?Taxation for big companies, or anyone in society, cannot be and must not be a voluntary arrangement. The responsibility of taxpayers is to pay the proper amount.?

But London Mayor Boris Johnson offered Starbucks some support. He said: ?It?s a bit unfair to bash companies and then sneer when they try to do good.

?Starbucks do a lot of apprenticeships and things like that as well.?
