The next time an out-of-state rescue facility wants to adopt from the Porterville Animal Shelter, they will have to undergo a much more rigorous process.
This after authorities in Marion County, Ore. removed more than 140 dogs from a warehouse on Jan. 13 where the animals were kept in deplorable conditions ? with little food, contaminated water and cages designed for one dog containing up to four, according to The Associated Press. A man who volunteered at the purported rescue facility for roughly two months told The Oregonian leaders would travel to Porterville and return with 80 dogs at a time.
Porterville City Manager John Lollis said in light of what happened, the city?s adoption process for these rescues ?will be much more regulated.?
Sgt. Richard Standridge with the Porterville Police Department said the department has already put measures in place to prevent such cases of dog neglect. ?
?We?re asking for proof of these rescues? non-profit status, we?re contacting the IRS to make sure they?re in good standing and to verify the people on the 501C3 are the same people at the rescues,? Standridge said.
Additionally, the PPD will contact the local police and sheriff?s departments and the closest human societies to conduct background checks of sorts.
?The bottom line is we?re trying to take these dogs to places where they don?t have to be euthanized,? said Dominic Barteau, spokesperson for the PPD, adding that what happened in Oregon was ?an isolated incident.?
?What it really comes down to is there are some policies and procedures in place to make sure this doesn?t happen again. We?re trying to take them to loving, caring homes where they can be taken care of,? Barteau said.
Standrige echoed Barteau?s comments.
?We?ve learned to be more diligent in our effort to ensure these animals are adopted to the appropriate rescues...where they can care for the animals and get them to good, safe homes,? he said.
