?There are 5 new health essentials that he [Dr. Andrew Weil] says you must have in your life right now. They can slow your aging, they can help you never get sick, and they can align your mind and your body,? says Dr. Oz as he introduces repeat special guest Dr. Andrew Weil as Dr. Weil takes viewers into his home behind closed doors.
As an introduction to this special episode of The Dr. Oz Show, Dr. Andrew Weil takes the camera man with him for a quick guided tour of his home, stopping off in the kitchen where he points out a diverse stock of herbs and non-carbohydrate foods like kelp noodles he likes to use in place of pasta.
He states that his home is his sanctuary and that he likes to surround himself with relaxing things that are beautiful to look at to help add to the tranquility of his home as he leads viewers to his bedroom and bathroom.
?I usually sleep very well, but on rare occasions when I don?t, ?Valerian? is a safe and effective sleep aid,? says Dr. Weil showing a small bottle of the med he keeps in his nightstand.
For pain, Dr. Weil points out that he believes a soak in a hot tub is the best way to treat pain, but does keep handy on his bathroom counter pain relievers he has discovered over the years that work for him such as DMSO that penetrates through the skin to the muscle for relief, and eucalyptus oil for clearing the airways with just two drops added to a kettle of boiling water.
Outside his home, Dr. Weil tells viewers that he swims in a pool everyday as well as starts the day with meditation near a shaded area beside his rose garden, of which he derives much pleasure taking care of through gardening.
?It?s essential to make sure that I meditate every day,? says Dr. Weil. ?I usually do it once I get up, and it starts the day off right. You have to feed your soul as well as your body, and being in an area of calm and beauty and being able to see mountains and desert does it for me,? says Dr. Weil.
Back on stage, Dr. Oz interviews Dr. Weil and jumps right in by asking Dr. Weil what he believes is wrong with how the majority of people deal with their health.
?If you had to guess at just the one single biggest mistake that the average person makes with their health, what is it?? asks Dr. Oz.
?I think that it is to expect a quick fix for everything, whether that?s from a pharmaceutical drug or some kind of technological fix? many people simply do not want to do the simple lifestyle changes that takes a little more time to work, but ultimately are much better,? says Dr. Weil.
To help people find the right changes they need to make toward their health, Dr. Weil reveals what he believes are the 5 new health essentials everyone needs to integrate into their lives. The following is a summary of Dr. Weil?s advice on The Dr. Oz Show for good health.
Health Essential #1: Iodine
?It?s an essential that millions of women are deficient in, in this country?as many as 1 in every 3,? says Dr. Weil. ?This is my multi-purpose mineral. It keeps everything functioning?your brain, your heart, your stomach?you name it. I consider iodine absolutely essential for your optimum health,? says Dr. Weil.
Dr. Weil explains how that iodine is essential for a wide range of biological processes that involves such components of the body?s systems such as metabolism, muscles, blood cell formation and hormones. He tells viewers that a deficiency in iodine can result in weight gain, in feeling cold all of the time and being constantly tired. And notes that one interesting sign of an iodine deficiency and possible thyroid problem is puffiness around the eyes.
Dr. Oz and Dr. Weil demonstrate to viewers that women can do a self-test at home for an enlarged thyroid gland by simply raising their chin up and placing their fingertips alongside the trachea where the their Adam?s apple is, and then swallow. If they feel a pronounced movement of a finger-sized or bigger lump moving up and down along the trachea as they swallow, then they may be developing a goiter (enlarged thymus gland) that needs to be examined by their physician.
To ensure that you are getting your recommended daily dose of iodine (150 micrograms), Dr. Weil says that you can get it from foods such as milk and dairy products, seafood such as tuna, sardines, mackerel and shell fish. But the best way is through seaweed?either from dried kelp that is made into a broth for soup, or by taking commercial kelp capsules found in health food stores.
Health Essential #2: Pistachio and DGL
Dr. Weil tells Dr. Oz that the most common complaint he deals with in his patients are people who suffer from digestive disorders such as excess gas, bloating, stomach cramps and pain and irritable bowel syndrome. All of which are often caused by the type of diet we eat that is rich in fatty meats.
To help people with these kinds of digestive system problems, Dr. Weil recommends a diet that includes pistachio nuts and DGL.
One serving of 47 pistachio nuts is Dr. Weil?s recommendation for a daily dose toward good digestion with the added benefit that pistachios offer fewer calories (150 calories per serving) than many other types of nuts.
?Not only are they chockfull of fiber and minerals, but recent research shows that they are a good prebiotic?that is, they feed the good bacteria in your gut,? says Dr. Weil.
DGL stands for De-Glycyrrhizinated Licorice that according to Dr. Weil is an herbal extract of licorice that is great for treating patients with acid reflux disease and heartburn.
?It?s one of the most frequent medications that I recommend for my patients,? says Dr. Weil.
Dr. Oz explains that DGL works by increasing mucous production in the stomach to provide a protective coat along the stomach?s inner lining while at the same time decreasing the acidity of stomach acid.
Dr. Weil recommends taking 1-2 chewable tablets 15 minutes before a meal and at bedtime to help treat constant acid reflux and heartburn.
Health Essential #3: Hand Massage
?Besides poor diet, I believe that stress is the number one threat to your health,? says Dr. Weil as he explains that the stress hormone cortisol is directly toxic to the nerve cells involved in the part of the brain where memory is processed.
?Not everyone has the time or desire or skill to meditate, but you can literally dial down your stress in less than a minute,? says Dr. Weil as he shows viewers how to use hand massage to take your stress away quickly as a form of acupressure therapy from China
His secret to doing a hand massage to yourself is to begin by pressing the thumb of one hand into the area between the thumb and index finger of the other hand making a small circular motion with pressure. Then move onto the base of each finger, one at time with a repeat of pressing the thumb against the base of the finger with pressure and a circular massage and ending each digit with a gentle twisting and pulling before going onto the next finger.
Health Essential #4: Know the Rules of Raw Foods
?You have to know which ones are best raw and which ones are best cooked,? says Dr. Weil as he explains that while some people who advocate that cooking raw vegetables actually destroys nutrients that your body could use, contact with stomach acid can destroy those nutrients as well when a vegetable is eaten raw. However, cooking some foods can actually increase the amount of nutrients that are taken in your body during digestion.
Examples that Dr. Weil and Dr. Oz provide include leafy greens, tomatoes and carrots. Leafy greens are best nutritionally when eaten raw, because cooking them leaves behind only a few nutrients for the body. However, both tomatoes and carrots release more nutrients into the body if cooked before eaten. So, contrary to popular opinion, carrots eaten cooked are better for the body than eaten raw.
?It?s the Lycopene you get from tomatoes that protects you from prostate cancer that you get from cooked tomatoes?not the raw ones,? adds Dr. Weil.
Dr. Weil also points out that some foods have important components that are active only when exposed to air and not cooked. Garlic is one example he says that should be crushed in its raw state, wait 10 minutes after crushing, and then add it to your salad or bread as a spread raw to get the beneficial nutrients it has.
Health Essential #5: Coenzyme Q10
?It?s the supplement that helps your heart and your brain,? says Dr. Weil. ?CoQ10 is literally a no-brainer for good health.?
Dr. Weil tells viewers that Coenzyme Q10 is an essential for the body, that it is a key regulator for metabolism and that it has a protective effect on muscle cells like those of the heart. Furthermore that it is essential for the brain cells and that a daily supplement of CoQ10 is needed because as we age, the amount of CoQ10 decreases that is available for keeping the brain healthy. Although the body produces its own Coenzyme Q10 naturally, Dr. Weil states that people on statin drugs in particular need supplemental CoQ10 because statins and some other medications suppress the body?s ability to synthesize this essential nutrient.
The dose of CoQ10 that Dr. Weil recommends is 120 mg and that it needs to be taken once a day with fats, because it is fat-soluble and needs the fat to help carry it into the cells. He recommends the soft gel type of supplement over the pill form.
When asked if CoQ10 can be provided by food rather than as a supplement, Dr. Weil tells viewers that certain foods can help you meet your daily requirement of CoQ10, but that it would mean eating a prohibitively large amount of food daily. For example it would take 4 pounds of sardines or 8 pounds of beef or 10 pounds of peanuts to be equivalent to 120 mg of CoQ10, which is why Dr. Weil promotes the supplement form of this essential nutrient.
