Sneaky Ways That Big Retailers Track Customers - Business Insider

Retailers are watching you.

In the age of smartphones, online shopping and data, it has become easier than ever for companies to monitor the consumers who give them business.

Retailers employ all sorts of clever tactics from using facial recognition devices to devising customer loyalty programs and cell phone signal trackers.

Then they use the collected data to determine where to place products in the store and how and where to advertise.

While many consumers are unassuming and unaware, a variety of groups are protesting the data collection as an invasion of privacy.

Israel's Arabic Citizens Plan Election Boycott

A growing number of Israel's Arab citizens are planning to boycott January's parliamentary elections. Already, pollsters say that fewer Arabs will vote in the upcoming elections than ever before. Palestinian leaders in Israel say it is because each year the government becomes more right-wing and they feel more ostracized.

No English Science, Maths books - Bonology.com Politically ...

Fourteen percent of schools in Sarawak have opted to use English in their Maths and Science, but parents doubt the Education Ministry's commitment to their choice.

Some 14% of primary and secondary schools in in East Malaysian state have opted to continue learning Mathematics and Science in English next year, but have failed to receive their English text books todate.

Said Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How: "On this eve of the opening of the new school year, it is discovered that schools in Sarawak have not received their English textbooks and workbooks, but only the Bahasa Malaysia versions were distributed to all the students.

"This is despite the fact that these schools have filled in and submitted a designated form distributed by the Education Department asking them to decide and indicate whether their primary school students from the PPSMI batch chooses to continue PPSMI fully in English, Bahasa Malaysia or both.

"These schools have expressly opted for English language for those students now in Standard 4 to Standard 6.

"In fact, it was the Deputy PM (Muhyiddin Yassin) himself who revealed last year that 5% from the total classes in 7,495 primary schools and 9% out of 2,192 secondary schools chose to fully used English for Maths and Science.

"He is fully aware of the needs and extent of schools requiring textbooks and workbooks in English for the batch of students still under PPSMI policy, yet these textbooks and workbooks are not being printed and distributed.

"The schools were given the textbooks and workbooks in Bahasa Malaysia instead."

He added that a quick survey in the bookshops had shown that no English reference books are prepared and printed in English, as the profit-driven private companies are switching immediately to produce reference texts and workbooks for the policy of MBMMBI (Upholding the Malay Language, Strengthening the English Language) whereby Mathematics and Science are only taught and learned in Bahasa Malaysia.

'Muhyiddin is worst Education Minister'

See, who is also state PKR vice president, said parents were now doubtful as to whether or not the Education Department has the contents and syllabus of the books prepared.

"The schools and parents can't be blamed for their doubts and queries as to whether the education department is going to supply the requisite textbooks and workbooks in English to these schools.

"There are even doubts whether the education department has the syllabus and contents of the textbooks and workbooks prepared and whether it is printing them," he said.

See said the availability of Malay language books on the subjects meant teachers and parents were forced to translate the syllabus and contents, according to their own respective understanding and perception of the Bahasa Malaysia texts.

"It certainly reflects poorly on the Umno-led BN federal government. The Education Ministry should have the proper planning in the formulation and implementation of the country's education policies and plans.

"The Deputy PM and Education Minister (Muhyiddin) has failed to appreciate the sensitivity and special needs in the East Malaysian states, particularly Sarawak, where English is also an official language and that special rights to use English is cherished and dear to Sarawakians.

"The inconsistency in the formulation and implementation of the educational policies, regulations, guidelines and instructions are the hallmark of his ministership. He is the country's worst Education Minister," he said .

(AP Photo/The New Jersey Herald, Amy Herzog)

(AP) ? Up to a foot of snow fell in parts of southern New England with the latest winter storm to move through the Northeast, national weather forecasters said Sunday.

The storm began Saturday afternoon and ended by Sunday morning, with some power outages but no reports of critical injuries or major property damage. Dry weather was expected for days in southern New England, although strong winds may chill the bones.

Meteorologist Frank Nocera of the National Weather Service in Taunton, Mass., said southern New England appeared to be the hardest hit.

Six to 12 inches of snow fell in Rhode Island, eastern Connecticut and eastern Massachusetts, including Foxborough where the New England Patriots play. The exception was at Boston and the Cape Cod area where rain was mixed with snow. There two to four inches fell. Many residents lost power after wet snow piled up on power lines.

The storm spread over the Northeast and parts of Ohio on Saturday, just days after the regions were hit by another storm that moved in from the nation's midsection.

New York City and Philadelphia saw a mix of rain and snow, and drivers throughout the regions were warned to be cautious. About 20 vehicles piled up in a storm-related chain-reaction crash on Interstate 93 in New Hampton, N.H., police said, and five people were injured.

Officials lowered the speed limit on much of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, about 300 miles from the Ohio state line to east-central Pennsylvania, from 65 mph to 45 mph. Flights at Philadelphia's airport, mostly arrivals, were delayed about an hour, spokeswoman Stacy Jackson said.

In Albany, N.Y., a regional jet skidded into a snow bank at the airport and became stuck, temporarily stranding passengers en route to Chicago. The 66 passengers and four crew members aboard the GoJet Airlines flight, operating as United Express, were put on a bus and sent back to the airport. There were no injuries, and the incident didn't cause any other flight delays, airport authority spokesman Doug Myers said.

In Ohio, Dayton, Columbus and Cincinnati saw about 2 to 5 inches of snow by Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

Star Wars Miniland at Legoland Florida

On?our trip to Legoland last week? (a Christmas?gift for our sons), my family and I were greeted with a wonderful surprise: All six episodes of Star Wars as told in Lego bricks.

I still can?t believe I didn?t know about it beforehand! It was in the press?when it opened on November 9th, but I guess I wasn?t paying attention. Earlier in 2012, a Star Wars Miniland had opened at Legoland Windsor, and the one at Legoland California has been open since March 2011 and an expansion has recently been added.

GeekMom has written plenty?already about Legoland Florida, so?while my husband and I were planning our trip, I wasn?t considering post fodder. But there it was ??some fresh new geekery to shout about to the masses. GeekMom Dakster?s husband trooped at the grand opening, but I think I might have been the first GeekMom to actually see it (and be it known it?s rare for me to be the first GeekMom to get to do anything this cool!).

And we almost missed it altogether! It?s tucked in a wooded area towards the back of the Miniland U.S.A. section of the park. You Moms know how it goes ? the kids see something off in the distance and you?re getting pulled in a different direction than you were intending. In our case, while we were at Miniland USA, the kids were begging to ride on the Dragon rollercoaster in the Lego Kingdom section.

Enjoy some pictures from our visit!

Texas 31, Oregon State 27

Oregon State has completed one of the country's biggest turnarounds, while Texas is trying to salvage a season considered a disappointment by its lofty standards.

Both the 15th-ranked Beavers and the Longhorns have dealt with uncertain quarterback situations leading up to Saturday's Alamo Bowl in San Antonio.

Oregon State (9-3) won six more games than it did last season, tying the largest improvement in the FBS. As a result, the Beavers are heading to their first bowl game since 2009, when they lost to BYU in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas.

Their three victories in 2011 were the fewest under coach Mike Riley since they won three in 1997 - the first season of Riley's initial tenure at the school.

"It was really just a combination of two very simple things, but not easy to accomplish obviously," said Riley, who owns a 5-1 record in bowl games. "The fact that we had some good, young, talented players, and they had a very good offseason. They stayed together, worked out together, had great intentions. So just development and hard work put together I think were the key elements in getting better."

The Beavers' quarterback situation was in flux all season due to injuries. Sean Mannion led the team to a 4-0 start before the sophomore suffered a knee injury that required surgery, paving the way for junior Cody Vaz to take over before he succumbed to a high ankle sprain.

Mannion regained the starting job - and struggled with four interceptions in a 48-24 loss to Oregon - but still started in the team's finale, a 77-3 blowout of Nicholls State.

Mannion went 20 of 23 for 231 yards and two touchdowns, but Vaz, who completed 14 of 17 passes for 190 yards and three TDs, also saw extensive action.

The duo helped the Beavers rank 15th nationally with 316.5 passing yards per game, and Riley named Vaz as his starter on Dec. 22 just prior to the team traveling to San Antonio.

Texas has gone 8-4 - a success for most - but a third consecutive season without a BCS bowl appearance had some questioning coach Mack Brown's job security. University president Bill Powers wrote in his blog Dec. 6 that Brown has his "full support," and will remain as coach.

The Longhorns are 9-4 in bowl games under Brown, but are 21-16 overall since losing the 2010 BCS championship game to Alabama.

"I'm fortunate to be at a place where the standards are very high and we're going to fight to make sure we get back to those standards," Brown said.

"If you ask me if I'm happy with three years of non-BCS games, I would say no. That's for me, much less everybody else."

David Ash started Texas' first 11 games under center but was benched in favor of Case McCoy during the team's Thanksgiving loss to TCU.

McCoy won't see the field Saturday, however, after he and injured linebacker Jordan Hicks were sent home for violating team rules. The players broke curfew and KENS-TV reports that police were investigating two unidentified Texas players in an alleged sexual assault at a San Antonio hotel.

Even before the suspensions were announced, Brown had decided to will go back to Ash, who has completed 67.7 percent of his passes with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

"You look at some of the things David did this year and I think he's still in the top 10 in passing efficiency," Brown said. "When he started poorly, he had more trouble than when he started right but he had some great games and we need to build on those."

The sophomore faces a difficult challenge.

Oregon State intercepted 19 passes this year, tied for sixth-most in the country, and the Beavers' 30 forced turnovers are tied for 12th. Seven of the Longhorns' 15 turnovers this season came in their last two games, including five interceptions.

Texas' defense struggled through the first seven games, allowing 35.0 points per game and 472.1 yards, but improved late, trimming those numbers to 21.6 and 328.4 in the final five contests.

The Longhorns' secondary will be tasked with slowing down Markus Wheaton, who ranks 11th nationally with 100.6 receiving yards per game.

Wheaton caught 12 passes against Nicholls State, bringing his career total to 224 and surpassing James Rodgers' school record of 222, set last year.

"I looked up to James when I got here - he was amazing," Wheaton said. "I knew he was as good as they get - his work ethic, his dedication, and I really wanted to be just like him as far as what he did on the field. And breaking the record I feel like I have worked, all of the hard work paid off."

This will be the third meeting in this series, with Texas winning the previous two. The most recent was Texas' 61-16 rout in Austin in 1987.

To stay perfect against Oregon State, the Longhorns will have to win without one of their co-offensive coordinators. Bryan Harsin has been named coach at Arkansas State, leaving Major Applewhite to handle the play calling.

Texas also announced that wide receivers coach Darrell Wyatt will be promoted to co-offensive coordinator.

The Longhorns won their only previous appearance in the Alamo Bowl, defeating Iowa 26-24 in 2006.

(AP) ? Israel's president and prime minister are trading charges over making peace with the Palestinians.

President Shimon Peres told a summit of international ambassadors and diplomats Sunday that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is a reliable peace partner. He said Israeli diplomacy must change "from an aggressive approach to a moderate approach of dialogue."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's party and his hawkish election partner released a statement calling the Israeli president out of touch and labeling the Palestinian president a "peace rejecter."

Peres won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994.

Netanyahu is expected to win Jan. 22 elections, and the hard-line bloc maintains a lead over dovish parties. The statement from Netanyahu's party said Peres' remarks in front of a diplomatic audience represent a political stance that encourages international condemnation of Israel.

iMore Editors' Choice: Clay Jam, Discovr People, Hill Climb Racing, and more

iMore Editors' Choice: Clay Jam, Discovr People, Hill Climb Racing, and more!

Every week, the editors and writers at iMore carefully select some of our favorite, most useful, most extraordinary apps, accessories, gadgets, and websites. This week's selections include several iPhone and iPad games, a social app that helps you find interesting people to follow, and an app (for non US folk) that gives away free content and apps.

Discovr People - Ally Kazmucha

Discovr People is a great concept with a beautiful app behind it. If you ever have issues finding quality users to follow on Twitter, Discovr People is a great way to get there. Once launching the app you can type in any username you'd like to see their network and recent interactions. If you know people that engage with people that share the same interests with you, those are the usernames I would search for.

I used Discovr People recently to search for the followers on Twitter that I interact with the most. From there I looked at the people they'd have the most recent interactions with. I actually ended up finding quite a few interesting people that won't clutter up my timeline with pointless retweets and memes. You can view their profiles right within Discovr People as well as follow them and add them to lists. For free, what more could you ask for?

Twelve Days of Christmas - Chris Oldroyd

This week, being Christmas week, I have chosen Apple?s annual free app ?Twelve Days of Christmas? that gives away free content for twelve days after Christmas.

The app gives away apps, books and music content every day starting from December 26th and it is well worth grabbing. You will receive a push notification each day of the promotion to remind you to get your free content.

So far Apple has given away a music EP, a football game and a TV episode from the really popular series ?Sherlock?. The downside is that the app is available in loads of places with the exception of the US App Store. If you haven?t got it already, make sure you do as there are still 9 more days to go!

Game of Thrones companion - Joseph Keller

If you're a fan of A Song of Ice and Fire series of books, or their adaptation, the Game of Thrones television series on HBO, you know that the world created by George R.R. Martin is very dense. The Game of Thrones Companion is your go-to reference guide for that world. The Companion contains the full details of characters, houses, cities, and more. Also included are several maps of all of the major locations in the series. But one of the best features of this app are the spoiler settings, which allow you to set which book you have read, up through the latest one. This way, you don't accidentally spoil yourself before you?ve had a chance to read the later books, and after you?ve finished each successive volume, you can update your spoiler settings accordingly. The Game of Thrones Companion is available for $2.99. If you?re a Game of Thrones fan, you should definitely give it a look.

Clay Jam - Simon Sage

Clay Jam is an imaginative free-to-play game that has players amassing clay by rolling a ball over various colorful and wacky monsters. Players have to dig a trench for a ball to roll through by tracing a path ahead of it, and as it rolls over monsters, the ball gets bigger, enabling it to pick up bigger ones. In that way, it's a lot like Katamari Damacy, but be careful to avoid things that are too big, or else you'll just bump right off them and lose some clay. There are optional missions for each stage that reward extra clay, which can be used to unlock new levels and monsters. Clay Jam is a ton of fun, and though it's very kid-friendly, even us grown-ups will enjoy playing a few rounds. You'll be surprised by how good an app made of clay looks.

Hill Climb Racing - Leanna Lofte

Hill Climb Racing isn't so much my pick, as it is my husband's pick for the week -- which is precisely why I'm choosing it. You see, my husband is what one would call a "gamer", but on the PC, on the iPhone or iPad, yet he is totally addicted to Hill Climb Racing right now. It's a physics based driving game where the goal is to drive as far as possible; it can be classified is a "runner" (only you're driving, not running). You must use the gas and break to control the speed of your car to prevent from flipping your car and breaking the driver's neck. Hill Climb Racing is both challenging and addicting.

Avengers: The Initiative - Rene Ritchie

AHulk smash puny pick of the week!

I'm fully capable of not liking things that are brilliant. There are plenty of great movies, filled with incredible vision and talent, that just aren't to my tastes. By the same token, I adore quite a few things that, empirically, aren't very good, including terrible martial arts movies, and bad comic book adaptions. It's into that last category that Avengers: The Initiative falls. As a game unto itself, it's a poor -- really poor -- clone of Infinity Blade with nowhere near the tightness of control, and even more repetitiveness.

But right out the gate, you could play as the Hulk.

Read that again. Infinity Blade, but you could play as the %$#@ Hulk. Yeah. Smash.

And now a bad thing has gotten even better. Avengers: The Initiative has been updated to better support the iPad mini, as well as the Phone 5 and iPod touch 5's 16:9 widescreen. They've also added the Hulk's Mr. Fixit look from the classic Peter David era (though in green, not gray, sigh), added a new location, the Hydracarrier (think Hellicarrier but more neo-Nazi), and new enemies like the Task Master.

And they've added a new playable character, Captain America.

That's right. %$#@ Captain America.

Would that the their game-crafted skill matched their feature intentions!

But just like I enjoy the hell out of really cheesy movies and TV shows, I'm enjoying the hell out of Avengers: The Initiative.

Normally $6.99, but right now it's on sale for the cheap, cheap price of FREE.

Your choice?

Now that we've chosen our favorites for the week, we want to hear yours! Did you pick up a killer app, accessory, or game this week? Let us know in the comments below!

Gophers vs. Air Force line chart; BC's York sets NCAA wins record; NHL/NHLPA CBA update

UPDATED

Legendary Boston College coach Jerry York, an NCAA head coach since 1972, became the winningest hockey coach in NCAA history this evening. The Eagles beat Alabama-Huntsville 5-2 in the first game of the Mariucci Classic.

It was York's 925th victory, passing Ron Mason for first all-time.

?Coaches coach. We play to win trophies. Despite all the hoopla, it never really entered my mind,? York said. ?We always talk in our program, there?s no personal goals. We?re not trying to become Hobey Baker [winners] and All-Americans.

?Golfers, they want to win a Masters. ? It?s not what we?re about with the Eagles. I?ve always been about the team. I haven?t really sought individual goals.?

York won 125 games at Clarkson, 342 at Bowling Green and now 458 in 19 seasons at Boston College. He has won five national championships ? four at Boston College ? and guided the Eagles to 10 Frozen Four berths since 1998.

In 1968, BC coach Bernie Burke handed York, then a graduate assistant, a whistle and said "run practice."

"I kind of liked it," York said. "I never had a whistle, you know?"

How much longer will he coach?

?I feel good, I feel healthy, I enjoy what I do,? York said. ?As long as BC feels I?ve done a good job, I?ll keep on moving.?

The Gophers, who have won 12 of 21 Mariucci Classics, play BC, the No. 1 team in the nation and defending national champs, Sunday at 7. Here is the advance from today's paper. York said tonight senior defenseman Patch Alber may miss the rest of this season. The doctor here believes he tore his meniscus playing pregame soccer tonight. Also, leading scorer Johnny Gaudreau is at world juniors and defenseman Isaac MacLeod is likely out with a shoulder injury.

As for NHL and NHLPA talks toward a new collective bargaining agreement, there were a series of conference calls between the two sides today.

I am told by sources that they went line by line through the NHL proposal from Thursday (see story here) and they will talk again Sunday, likely face to face, with bargaining potentially going to re-start formally Sunday or Monday.

Remember, an agreement must be struck by Jan. 11 in order for training camp to start Jan. 12 and a 48-game season to begin Jan. 19. That means the Wild's home opener could fall on Hockey Day Minnesota.

By the way, one big reason why the league would love to start Jan. 19 is NBC's first telecast is supposed to be set for Jan. 20.

Health and Fitness of Your Pet Horses ? Absolutely No Horsing ...

Petting a horse is not a unique concept and many people these days have amazing facilities for their animal. However, the fact remains that not all can afford to own a horse. The idea of owning a horse is great, but it is indeed challenging and is no where close to adopting a cat or dog. No matter how many pets you have at home, the care and attention that a horse needs is quite different. Starting from the space it needs, grooming, food and training, everything has to be perfect.

You need to have a big farm, if you wish to pet a horse. Horses are wonderful and should be treated with due respect and care. If you are not able to manage a horse, and yet wish to have one, then it is better to hire a professional to do so. These professionals are well trained and you need no worry at all once you have hired them.

Important point for feeding the horse

You should feed the horse depending upon its health, age, activities and season. Some horses may eat more while the others have limited diet. Healthy diet plays a very important role in the growth process of the horse. Food for horses is available easily in the market, which is specifically produced keeping their body requirements in mind.

It is a pleasure watching a well maintained horse galloping in your farm. Your beautiful animal is sure to attract a number of eyes in the neighborhood. You could blend a few of the food items to ensure a healthy diet for your pet. When purchasing food for horse always look for the best brand. It is better to buy food items, which are of good quality, even if it is a little expensive.

Where to buy food products for your lovely pet?

Always choose the right food products made with healthy ingredients, which will ensure that your animal remains fit and disease free. Not all food products that are highly priced are good. There are many producers who sell their merchandizes for cheaper prices with excellent quality.

Instead of running around from one store to another, you could buy horse food from the online vendors. They not only offer you a variety of merchandizes, but also discounts that you could use. Once you?ve placed an order for what you like, and made the payment for the discounted amount, you can relax and wait for the product to be delivered at your doorstep.

The biggest advantage of buying these products online is that, you will sometimes get the best quality for same value. There are many brands that sell all the horse related accessories online too. The best way to judge a vendor is to go through reviews about his or her products, which are easily found posted on the online forums. They give you a better idea about its ingredients, effects on animals and others.

What should you know before buying a horse?

The first thing is to figure out why you need a horse? It is for your passion or profession? Once you are clear about this, you?ll then need to find out how to maintain it based on your requirements. Horses that are meant to stay in the farm are treated much differently than the ones for the races. Their needs are different and are brought up in a unique manner.

The horses that are petted for professional needs should ideally be much stronger and active. They are fed different kind of food, which is rich in proteins, carbohydrates and other nutrients to ensure that their health is not compromised under any circumstances. On the other hand, a farm horse has different diet and thus, it needs to be looked into carefully.

Buying a house in the suburbs of a major city can be intimidating. When I first moved to the DC area and, out of curiosity, studied some housing prices, I was floored to find even modest homes in the million-dollar range. And it?s only getting steeper; as people move out of cities but continue working there, they?re more willing to stretch their commute times into the multiple-hour range so they can give their family a single-family home with a yard. Whether you live in an apartment, house, or duplex in the DC area, you?ll need a reliable, trustworthy frederick real estate agent to make sure you get a sturdy, safe, and comfortable home in your price range.

Often, apartments and condos are sold or rented by property management companies that have specific requirements before you move in. These might include credit checks, homeowners? association fees and agreements, no-pets policies, and limits on the number of people who can live in a certain place. A Frederick real estate agent can help you navigate the rules, policies and requirements of these kinds of property management companies.

Whether you want to buy a house for your existing family, or planning ahead for the future, you?ll want an experienced, knowledgeable realtor to help you along the way. When you hire a real estate agent, feel free to educate yourself using any of the multitude of books and Web sites out there so you can ask your realtor the kinds of questions you?ll need to make an educated decision. Don?t hesitate to question your realtor if you think she is making a judgment call that is not right for you, and don?t hesitate to switch realtors if you feel yours isn?t taking your needs into consideration.

In addition, you?ll want an attorney to look over any agreements before you sign them. Ask your attorney to explain statutes listed in any contract or agreement, and be sure you understand everything it says. This will require reading the contract and asking your attorney to explain anything you don?t understand. Don?t sign anything you?re uncomfortable with or not sure about; get clarification first.

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's foreign minister said Saturday that Syrian President Bashar Assad has no intention of stepping down and it would be impossible to try to persuade him otherwise.

After a meeting with Lakhdar Brahimi, the U.N.'s envoy for the Syrian crisis, Lavrov also said that the Syrian opposition risks sacrificing many more lives if it continues to insist on Assad leaving office as a precondition for holding talks on Syria's future.

Assad "has repeatedly said publicly and privately, including in his meeting with Lakhdar Brahimi in Damascus not long ago, that he does not intend to leave for anywhere, that he will stay to the end in his post, that he will, as he expressed it, defend the Syrian people, Syrian sovereignty and so forth," Lavrov said. "There's no possibility to change this position."

Brahimi warned that the country's civil war could plunge the entire region into chaos by sending hundreds of thousands of refugees into neighboring nations, but his talks in Moscow produced no sign of progress toward settling the crisis.

Brahimi and Lavrov both said after their meeting that the 21-month-old Syrian conflict can only be settled through talks, while admitting that the parties in the conflict have shown no desire for compromise. Neither official hinted at a possible solution that would persuade the Syrian government and the opposition to agree to a ceasefire and sit down for talks about a political transition.

Brahimi, who arrived in Moscow on a one-day trip following his talks in Damascus with Assad this week, voiced concern about the escalation of the conflict, which he said is becoming "more and more sectarian."

The envoy warned that "if you have a panic in Damascus and if you have 1 million people leaving Damascus in a panic, they can go to only two places ? Lebanon and Jordan," and those countries may not be able to endure half a million refugees each.

Brahimi said that "if the only alternative is really hell or a political process, then we have got all of us to work ceaselessly for a political process."

Russia has been the main supporter of Assad's regime since the uprising began in March 2011, using its veto at the U.N. Security Council along with China to shield its last Mideast ally from international sanctions.

Lavrov said Russia would continue to oppose any U.N. resolution that would call for international sanctions against Assad and open the way for a foreign intervention in Syria. And while he again emphasized that Russia "isn't holding onto Bashar Assad," he added that Moscow continues to believe the opposition demand for his resignation as a precondition for peace talks is "counterproductive."

"The price for that precondition will be the loss of more Syrian lives," Lavrov said.

Both Brahimi and Lavrov insisted that efforts to end the civil war must be based on a peace plan that was approved at an international conference in Geneva in June.

The Geneva plan calls for an open-ended cease-fire, a transitional government to run the country until elections, and the drafting of a new constitution. But it was a non-starter with the opposition because of Russia's insistence that the plan leave the door open for Assad being part of the transition process and the fact that it didn't mention possible U.N. sanctions.

Brahimi said that while some "little adjustments" could be made to the original plan, "it's a valued basis for reasonable political process."

With the opposition offensive gaining momentum in Syria, there is little hope that the initiative would have any more chance of success than it had when it was approved.

Lavrov has said that Moscow is ready to talk to the main Syrian opposition group, even though it had earlier criticized the United States and other Western nations for recognizing the Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people.

On Friday, coalition leader Mouaz al-Khatib rejected the Russian invitation for talks and urged Moscow to support the opposition's call for Assad's ouster. Lavrov said Saturday that al-Khatib's statement was surprising after his earlier contacts with Russian diplomats in Egypt during which the opposition tentatively agreed on a meeting in a third country.

Lavrov said the coalition leader should "realize it would be in his own interests to hear our analysis directly from us."

Lavrov rejected the opposition claim that Russia's continuing weapons supplies to Assad's regime make it responsible for mass killings in Syria, saying that Moscow bears no responsibility for the Soviet-era weapons in Syrian arsenals. He said that defensive weapons such as anti-aircraft missiles that Russia has continued to supply to Damascus couldn't be used in the civil war.

"We aren't providing the Syrian regime with any offensive weapons or weapons that could be used in a civil war," Lavrov said. "And we have no leverage over what the regime has got since the Soviet times."

Georgy Mirsky, a leading Mideast expert with the Institute for World Economy and International Relations, a top foreign policy think tank, said President Vladimir Putin's stand on Syria is rooted in fear that joining international calls for Assad's resignation would make him look weak at home.

"It would look like an inadmissible concession to America, a virtual surrender. The Kremlin would lose its face, look like a loser," said Mirsky.

He wrote in his blog that Putin is resigned to Assad's eventual collapse and the loss of any Russian influence in a future Syria, but firmly opposes international sanctions. That stand allows Putin to tell his domestic audience that Russia has defended its ally until the end against overwhelming odds, said Mirsky.

Pet Talk: Volunteer puppy raisers socialize assistance dogs for ...

If you?ve resolved to find a meaningful way to help people and the animals that aid them this coming year, here?s one thought: volunteer to raise a puppy.

Canine Companions for Independence, a national nonprofit which provides trained assistance dogs free of charge?to people with disabilities, relies on volunteers to help socialize the dogs before their formal career training begins.

?We call it getting ready for college,? says Susan Manuel, president of CCI?s Cascade Chapter and a volunteer puppy raiser. ?There are certain things you have to learn, you have to be a certain level of maturity and have some life experience to be successful in college. It?s kind of the same thing with these dogs.?

Socializing is a key factor in prepping the puppies for their future careers because the work they will do is vital to their future owner?s well-being.

They need to be able to behave properly while their handler is at work and out and about, so the puppy raisers provide the dogs with basic obedience training and expose them to as many people and places as possible. Dogs often accompany them to work, out shopping and even on vacation.

The California-based nonprofit, established in 1975, trains four types of assistance dogs to help people who have physical or developmental disabilities; are hearing-impaired; or who need comfort in a health care, courtroom or educational setting.

The puppies are bred by volunteer breeder caretakers, who must live within 90 miles of the organization?s headquarters in Santa Rosa, Calif. All of the dogs are either Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers or a cross of the two.

Becoming a puppy raiser

The puppies spend their first eight weeks in a volunteer breeder caretaker?s home, then go through a health check and are shipped out to one of the 1,050 puppy raisers in five regions around the country. They?ll live in the volunteers? homes for the next 16 to 18 months.

Puppy raisers don?t have to be dog experts by any means. In fact, some volunteers have never even owned a dog before.

?We have people that come to us with zero dog experience and have never had a dog before in their life,? says Heather Ohmart, a contract trainer for CCI and volunteer puppy raiser. ?It?s something most anybody can do.?

New volunteers are equipped with a manual, video, and classroom support from fellow CCI volunteers.

The assistance offered by fellow volunteers was a big bonus for Manuel, who has owned dogs before but never raised a puppy. Now, she?s caring for her fifth.

A software engineer for Hewlett-Packard, Manuel was inspired to socialize puppies after seeing a co-worker get involved. She contacted him, and was caring for a puppy about six weeks later.

?I love the idea of combining my love of dogs with helping people,? she says.

Her participation with CCI has connected her to a whole new community, she says. What?s more, the trademark blue-and-yellow capes often inspire others to inquire about the dogs.

?You find connections everywhere and it?s such a wonderful thing,? Manuel says. ?It?s given me a whole world I never even knew about.?

Ohmart stepped up after hearing a CCI graduate do a presentation about the importance of service dogs in her life.?

The woman was on a waiting list for her next service dog after the previous one passed away. Without a dog to assist her, she said, she was unable to leave her home independently without her husband or children.

?I filled out an application on the spot,? says Ohmart, who also works with female inmates in CCI?s puppy training program at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville.

Prospective puppy raisers should have no more than three dogs at home already. Kids are fine ? the more opportunities to socialize, the better ? but people with infants are encouraged to hold off until the children are a little more self-sufficient.

Puppy raisers should also be financially capable of caring for the dogs and be able to afford food, medical care, training and transportation (all of which should be tax-deductible, but check with your tax adviser first).

Traits that make good puppy raisers include consistency, reliability and an appreciation for CCI?s mission.

Volunteering is ideal for families with teenagers, Manuel points out, and makes for a good senior-year project. It?s also a good way to introduce potential owners to daily life with dogs on a short-term basis.

One of the most common questions Manuel and Ohmart frequently hear is, how can they ever give the puppies up?

Some won?t have to. Some dogs are released from the program, and their puppy raisers have the first right of adoption to those dogs.

Those that do graduate help their new handlers so much that their stories are inspiration enough to wipe away the tears and turn over the leash, Ohmart says

For instance, there?s Vancouver resident Mary Williams, who relies on her hearing dog Suzanne the Second to navigate her through her now-silent world.

After losing her hearing, she no longer felt safe going for walks because she couldn?t hear people coming behind her.

?My world became smaller,? she says.

Suzanne expanded it again. The hearing dog, which has been with Williams for eight years, recognizes at least 30 sounds, ranging from the doorbell and phone to a honking car horn.

?The deafness kind of clipped my wings,? Williams says, ?and Suzie gave them back.?

To volunteer as a CCI puppy raiser:

Visit the website for more information and to fill out the volunteer application: cci.org. Call Susan Manuel, president of CCI?s Cascade Chapter, with questions at 971-533-7458.

If you think you might want to raise a puppy, you can start by filling out an application online. The application process usually involves a phone interview and a home visit to make sure your home is safe for a puppy.

Samsung faces some tough remedies in its ITC patent battle with Apple

On October 24th, ITC Judge Thomas Pender ruled that Samsung infringed on several Apple patents. But it wasn't until the release of? the full-length version of Pender's ruling on Friday, that it became apparent how damaging the decision could be to Samsung's U.S. business. If the ITC goes along and affirms Judge Pender's ruling, which the staff agrees with, Samsung could find some of its devices banned during a 60 day Presidential review period that would follow a final ITC decision. Pender's decision must be voted on by the six-member commission.

Samsung also could face at the same time, a cease and desist order that would prevent the company from selling large quantities of infringing products in the U.S. At the same time, Samsung could be required to post a bond equal to 88% of? the value of all mobile phones, 32.5% of the value of mobile players and 37.6% of the value of all tablets that were ruled to have infringed on Apple's patents, during the Presidential review period. Samsung argued that a royalty rate of 4.9% was more appropriate.

Thankfully for Samsung, Judge Pender did approve design changes made by the Korean manufacturer that worksaround the claims made by Apple. These designarounds allow Samsung to continue to sell certain products in the U.S. even in the face of the October decision. And one of the patents involved in this case, the so-called "Steve Jobs" patent, has been ruled invalid by the USPTO. Despite the designarounds, Samsung could still be required to post a bond on the devices that no longer infringe on Apple's patents. Even worse, customs could still hold up shipments of these products until the agency is 100% sure that an exclusion order doesn't apply to the re-designed devices.

These are just some of the remedies that could be used against Samsung. The commission still needs to vote on Pender's ruling, and the designarounds seem to mean that it is still business as usual in the states for Samsung, at least for now.

Harry Carey Jr., western movie actor, dies at 91

LOS ANGELES -- Veteran character actor Harry Carey Jr., who appeared in scores of television shows and films including nine of famed movie director John Ford's classic Hollywood westerns, has died at age 91, his family said on Friday.

Carey, a frequent supporting player in films starring John Wayne, died peacefully of natural causes on Thursday morning in the seaside town of Santa Barbara, Calif., surrounded by family members, said his daughter, Melinda Carey.

"No cancer or nothing, he just got old," she said of her father, who is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marilyn, and three adult children.

Carey's more notable big-screen credits included a co-starring role with John Wayne in Ford's 1948 outlaw film "3 Godfathers," the role of a young cavalry officer in Ford's 1949 western "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," also with Wayne, and a turn decades later in a saloon scene in the 1990 sci-fi comedy "Back to the Future Part III."

In all, he made 11 movie appearances with Wayne.

Among other Ford-directed films in which Carey appeared were "The Searchers" (1956), "Wagon Master" (1950) and "Rio Grande" (1950).

In addition to a prodigious movie career that encompassed more than 90 films, Carey was a fixture on television during an era when westerns proliferated on the small screen, popping up in various character roles on such prime-time hits as "Bonanza," "Gunsmoke" and "Wagon Train" in the 1960s and 1970s.

In the 1950s, he had a recurring role in "The Adventures of Spin and Marty," a series of TV shorts that aired as part of "The Mickey Mouse Club."

Carey was born in 1921, the son of silent film star Harry Carey and his wife, Olive, who also was an actress.

The young Carey was raised among cattle and horses on his parents' 1,000-acre ranch in California's Santa Clarita Valley, north of Los Angeles, and he earned the nickname "Dobe" because his hair color was the hue of the ranch's reddish adobe clay. Even late in life, he went by that nickname.

The John Ford Stock Company
The family's affiliation with Ford dated back to the director's earliest westerns, with Carey's father appearing in some of Ford's silent films in 1917.

During World War Two, the younger Carey worked with Ford on training and propaganda films for the U.S. military. He went on to become a regular performer, along with his father, in the John Ford Stock Company?-- actors and crew members who Ford used repeatedly in his films. Carey Jr. was reported to be the last surviving member of Ford's stock company.

Getty, Reuters, Getty

Carey's first feature collaboration with Ford in "3 Godfathers," playing the Abilene Kid, saw Carey, Wayne and Mexican-born actor Pedro Armendariz co-star as cattle rustlers and bank robbers who care for an orphaned baby boy while dodging the law. Carey's father starred in the original 1919 version, also directed by Ford.

Carey began his association with Wayne in another 1948 release, the classic Howard Hawks western movie "Red River," which also starred the elder Carey, though father and son had no scenes together.

Among Carey's last screen appearances were his turn as a U.S. marshal in the 1993 film "Tombstone," which starred Val Kilmer and Kurt Russell, and a supporting role in the 1997 TV movie "Last Stand at Saber River," which starred Tom Selleck.

The Carey family ranch, which was visited over the years by Wayne and fellow actors William S. Hart and Gary Cooper, has been turned into a Los Angeles County historic park called Tesoro Adobe.

Laurene Weste, city councilwoman in Santa Clarita, said Carey Jr. remains a beloved figure in the area where the family ranch was once so prominent. "He was just a wonderful, loving, kind, down-to-Earth man," she said.

Boosting Enrolment into Vocational and Technical Education

Programs in Nigeria

By:

Igbinedion, V. I.1 & I. J. Ojeaga1

Department of Vocational and Technical Education, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin

(International Education Studies; Vol. 5, No. 4; 2012)

ARTICLE REVIEW:

The authors has discussed about to address issues of youth unemployment, poverty and international competitiveness in skills development towards current and projected opportunities and challenges. Numerous reforms in vocational and technical education programs over the years, they still remain greatly detested by students and parents in Nigeria as evidenced in low enrolment when compared with sciences, engineering, banking and finance, and medicine.

The authors was also describe that technical and vocational education in Nigeria is so misconstrued that it has become extremely difficult in management perspective, to administer the program to meet societal ever changing needs. Presently, the program is bedeviled by many challenges that hinder the realization of its objectives as specified by the National Policy on Education of Federal Government of Nigeria (2004). One of these challenges is low enrolment. It is the concern of that enrolment into technical and vocational programs may be low not because Nigerian youths are lazy nor do not want to use their hands to work. But it may be because many Nigerians do not fully understand the benefits, scope and content of the program and lack of vocational or career education and occupation information services to students while in or out of schools.

The authors also mentioned that many of them make choices without proper understanding of their abilities, interests and attitudes. Most of the young people are said to select occupations like medicine, engineering, accounting mainly because of the positions and prestige attached to the job and not necessarily as a result of conscious assessment of the individual?s interests and abilities. Therefore, career education may be a veritable means of providing career awareness and information services to students in order to improve enrolment in vocational and technical education in Nigeria. Students, parents and the society at large look unto the school to help the adolescents and youth make career decision based on realistic abilities, interests and availability. Therefore, it is required to use of career education and occupation information services in boosting enrolment in vocational and technical education programs in Nigeria.

In addition, from the author?s research, they are also identified some of the factors responsible for low enrolment in TVET in Nigeria which are:

1.? Poor Societal Perception: Many people are yet to understand the meaning, scope and content of vocational and technical education. Some view it as education for the handicapped or education for those who cannot cope with the sciences. (Osa-Edoh ,2008)

2.??? Poor Societal Attitude: The attitude of people towards vocational and technical education contributes to the problems in teaching the subject. It notes that in schools, the teacher could be teaching people who are not interested in the subject that is being taught. (Idialu, 2007).

3.???Elitism: Elitism could be described as the belief of a group in society that because of superior privileges, power and talent they tend to hold on to this belief through a system of education that will sustain this group?s interest. (Oviawe and Anavberokhai, 2008).

4.??? Poor Entry Level: Students who enroll in vocational and technical education programs are considered to have low aptitude. The technical schools find it hard to attract good students because there is a strong misconception that they are reserved for the never-to- do-wells and other negative by-products. Those admitted because they cannot find other things to do barely pass through the program because of poor aptitude and attitude. (Oviawe and Anavberokhai, 2008).

5.?? Lack of Recognition: There is a low recognition associated with manual labor in Nigeria. Unlike her counterparts in developed countries, the skilled craftsman does not enjoy the same recognition. (Oviawe and Anavberokhai, 2008).

6.????Discrimination against Graduates of Technical and Vocational Education: There is also the problem of unhealthy perception or discrimination against technical graduates. It was stated that this discrimination is virtually visible amongst graduates of technical schools (technical college, monotechnics, colleges of technology, polytechnics) and university graduates. Up till now, the former is being managed by National Board for Technical Education while the latter is under the supervision of National Universities Commission. countries, the skilled craftsman does not enjoy the same recognition (Ogidefa, 2010).

DISCUSSION

From the above, it shows that the TVET programmes in Nigeria are still not being acceptable by most of the people. Low prestige given to the TVET is the most factors that hinder the participation of the students to the TVET. Other factors like discrimination to the TVET programme, poor entry level to TVET, elitism, etc are also will become crucial if no actions taken to this issue. It is agreed that it was difficult to the government in enhancing or rebranding the educational systems especially TVET as it requires a lot of financial support and resources. However, due to the current globalization of the economy systems, the government of Nigeria needs to do something in promoting TVET as the economy will grow with the support from the TVET. The growth of the country is actually depending on how many unemployed in that country. The less number of unemployed, the more established the country. Few actions can be taken in promoting TVET like career conference, field trip, collaborating industrial training, providing career information center, etc.
