Romney, on video, to address veterans' issues

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is planning to discuss veterans' issues with the Republican National Convention via satellite Wednesday as 2008 presidential nominee John McCain speaks in person.

Romney is set to fly to Indianapolis Wednesday morning to address the American Legion. Republican officials said they are finalizing plans for the 2012 nominee to make a remote appearance at the ongoing convention to discuss veterans' concerns in conjunction with McCain, a Navy veteran and former prisoner of war.

The 2012 Republican nominee is making a daylong detour to Indiana to speak to the veterans' service organization in person even as delegates are still gathered in Tampa. McCain ? nominated in St. Paul, Minn., four years ago, only to lose to Democrat Barack Obama ? will address the delegates Wednesday evening.

McCain is expected to discuss national security and defense issues. In recent weeks, McCain has led a tour of Republican senators to presidential battleground states, including Nevada, faulting Democrats for not acting to stop automatic defense cuts that would begin next year unless Congress steps in.

The address means Romney will appear, in some way, on all three nights of his convention. He was in the hall Tuesday evening as his wife, Ann, gave a sweeping speech aimed at showcasing his personal side. He plans to return Thursday for his own convention address.

The convention schedule ? and Romney's plans ? promise a focus on foreign affairs ahead of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan's Wednesday speech, the last item on the day's agenda. McCain is set to speak at 8 p.m. while former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will address foreign policy later in the evening.

Officials said they're still finalizing plans for how Romney and McCain's appearances will be coordinated. The former Massachusetts governor was formally nominated as the Republican Party's presidential candidate on Tuesday.

In a Tuesday interview, McCain said he was glad to have a role in Romney's convention, however small.

"It's not my show," the five-term Arizona senator said. "I'm just grateful they asked me to speak."

Rigid packaging to see the highest growth in India and China till 2016: Study

Published 20 August 2012

Increase in global manufacturing output, growth in consumer spending on packaged goods worldwide and increasing urban populations are key factors in for an increase in rigid packaging demand, according to a report entitled, World Rigid Packaging, from The Freedonia Group.

As per the report, emerging economies, particularly India, China and Indonesia, are expected register highest growth rates in rigid packaging, as the demand would be driven by their large food and beverage industries.

Brazil, Turkey, Russia and Mexico follow their Asian counterparts in the growth rates.

"China alone will account for 46% of global value gains in rigid packaging demand between 2011 and 2016," says the report.

Food and beverage alone accounted for the largest demand in rigid packaging, as this segment was responsible for 64% of total rigid packaging demand in 2011.

It is expected that rigid packaging demand in pharmaceutical applications will witness above-average growth, driven by expanding pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities, particularly in Asia.

Lilly Alzheimer's drug shows some promise in study

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? A possible Alzheimer's disease treatment from drugmaker Eli Lilly showed some promise in late-stage research, even though the drug failed to slow a form of mental decline in two separate studies of patients with the mind-robbing condition.

Shares of the Lilly climbed Friday in morning trading after the Indianapolis company announced what could be a step toward a long-awaited breakthrough in the fight against a disease that has no cure and ultimately proves fatal. But Lilly officials cautioned that it's important not to overreact to their initial results.

Lilly said Friday its treatment, solanezumab, failed to slow cognitive decline, which involves a person's memory, in two late-stage studies of about 1,000 patients each. But when data from the trials were combined, scientists saw a statistically significant slowing of the rate of cognitive decline in the bigger population.

They also saw a statistically significant result when they examined a subgroup of patients with mild cases of Alzheimer's disease. The studies focused on patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's cases.

Lilly shares climbed nearly 3 percent, or $1.23, to $43.63 Friday, while broader trading indexes fell slightly.

The studies fell short of their main goals, and that means the drug "isn't going to the (Food and Drug Administration) tomorrow to be approved for sale," said William H Thies, chief medical and scientific officer for the Alzheimer's Association, which was not involved in Lilly's research. Still, he said the statistical significance of the combined results is important.

"If that can be replicated, that is a major finding," he said. "It's the first time we've been able to change the course of Alzheimer's disease or any part of Alzheimer's disease in people."

Lilly said it will discuss the results with regulators and plan the next steps. Full results from the studies will be presented at two scientific conferences in October.

If you look through "rose-colored glasses" at the results, there may be a sign of potential benefit on cognitive tests, but it is not clear whether that is enough to make a real difference clinically in how patients do, said Dr. Ronald Petersen, director of the Mayo Clinic's Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.

The key will be details the company will present later on brain imaging and other tests, he said. If those show that the drug is helping clear plaque, "it might mean that the drug is doing what it's supposed to be doing, but we're just attacking the disease too late," said Petersen, who heads a safety monitoring panel for two companies working on a different Alzheimer's treatment.

It's up to the FDA to decide how much faith to put in secondary analyses or results in subgroups, he added.

"The danger would be an over-interpretation of a small finding or a subtle effect," Petersen said.

About 35 million people worldwide have dementia, a term for brain disorders that affect memory, judgment and other mental functions. Alzheimer's is the most common type. In the United States, more than 5 million people have Alzheimer's, which is the country's sixth-leading cause of death.

Many Alzheimer's patients typically live four to eight years after diagnosis, as the disease gradually erodes their memory and ability to think or perform simple tasks. Current Alzheimer's treatments only temporarily ease symptoms such as memory loss, confusion and agitation. They don't slow, stop or reverse mental decline.

Drugmakers have tried and failed for years to develop successful treatments for the disease, and patients and doctors are anxious for any signs of promise. Analysts have said an approved treatment that slows the disease's progression could be worth billions of dollars in sales.

Earlier this month, Pfizer Inc. and Johnson & Johnson said they would end development of an intravenous version of their potential Alzheimer's treatment, bapineuzumab, after two late-stage studies showed it worked no better than a placebo in patients with mild-to-moderate cases.

Lilly officials cautioned Friday that their study did not show that solanezumab slowed the progression of Alzheimer's. It showed signs of slowing cognitive decline, one of many ways the disease impacts a person's mind. Even so, they were encouraged.

Solanezumab binds to beta-amyloid protein, which scientists believe is a key component to sticky plaque that basically gums up the brain of a patient with Alzheimer's disease. The drug is designed to bind to the protein and help the body remove it from the brain before it can form that plaque. Lilly said that while the individual trials missed their main goals, the combined results showed there may be some validity to this approach.

"We really think this idea of attacking amyloid plaques is a valid hypothesis, that's important news," said Dave Ricks, president of Lilly Bio-Medicines.

But Dr. Sam Gandy, head of Alzheimer's disease research at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, said Lilly's statement on the results "is very tentative."

"I believe in the notion that an amyloid-lowering agent like solanezumab will eventually work in early disease or pre-symptomatically, but whether these data provide compelling evidence that solanezumab has 'cleared the bar' just cannot be concluded" until full results are presented, Gandy wrote in an email.

Baxter International Inc. also reported some encouraging results in July from its potential Alzheimer's treatment, Gammagard. The company said a tiny study indicated Gammagard might help stabilize Alzheimer's for up to three years. Four patients who got the highest dose of Gammagard for three years showed no decline on memory and cognition tests, but a dozen others on different doses or shorter treatment times didn't fare as well.

That study was too small to prove the treatment works, but a more rigorous one involving 400 patients will end late this year, with results expected by early next year.

7? Garmin dezl 760 offers truckers big screen and ... - GPS Tracklog

As I predicted, Garmin has chosen not to cede the 7? truck/RV market to Magellan, as they have just announced the Garmin dezl 760. Updating the dezl 560 series, this behemoth offers more than just a big screen. Like recent nuvis, it can utilize Smartphone Link to send all sorts of data to the unit from an Android smartphone, such as weather, fuel prices and traffic camera images.

But perhaps as interesting is a feature we have yet to see on nuvis ? Active Lane Guidance (shown above and in the video below starting at about the 1:24 mark) ? though I?m betting it will show up in the 2013 nuvi line which I?m expecting to be announced in the next few weeks. Here?s Garmin?s description of it?

Garmin??Introduces dezl 760 Truck Navigator with Seven-Inch Display and Active LaneGuidance

OLATHE, Kan./August 22, 2012/Business Wire ? Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, today announced?dezl?760, the company?s first trucking navigator with a seven-inch display and a new Active Lane Guidance feature to help truckers confidently navigate intersections and exits. The?dezl?760?is packed with trucking-specific functions, such as route calculation based on truck attributes, trucking points of interest (POIs),?Hours of Service (HOS)?logging, an extra-loud speaker and backup camera support. Compatible with?Garmin Smartphone Link, it is the only navigation device for truckers with the ability to receive real-time information?[1] through a smartphone app, such as fuel prices, traffic camera images and weather. The Garmin dezl 760 will be on display at the Garmin booth (#9033) at the Great American Trucking Show (August 23-25, 2012) in Dallas, TX.

?The new?dezl?760 is designed to meet the specific needs of truckers, helping to?make their job easier?and?save time, fuel, and money,? said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of worldwide sales. ?Its seven-inch display makes it easy for truckers to see all the information they need at a glance and allows for split-screen depiction of our new Active Lane Guidance. With features like trip data recording, border notices and real-time information through Smartphone Link, the?dezl?760 becomes a full-featured digital assistant in the cab.?

Truck-Specific Navigation

With detailed maps and leading Garmin navigation technology,?the dezl 760 provides truck-specific routes and turn-by-turn directions based on vehicleheight, weight, length and carriage. Users can simply enter their truck?s profile and the device will consider truck-verified roads that are suitable for the truck?s characteristics. It also provides warnings of upcoming hazards such as sharp curves. The device can save multiple truck profiles and users can change the active profile at any point. Finding pit stops is a cinch with trucking specific POIs, including truck stops, weigh stations, dealerships and washes. Garmin Exit Services allows drivers to quickly search for upcoming POIs at highway exits. Also included are sunrise and sunset times to follow after-sunset regulations, mile markers to share a location with others, andstate/country border notices to comply with legal requirements.

New Active Lane Guidance

Utilizing the large seven-inch display of the dezl?760,?the new Active Lane Guidance is displayed in a split-screen next to the map view to guide drivers to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit.?In a?moving?lane animation a purple line indicates the way the driver should follow, showing truckers exactly which lane they have to be in and helping to avoid potentially dangerous last-minute maneuvers.

Automatically Log Miles and Fuel Usage

To make it easier for truckers to keep track of their trip data, thedezl 760 automatically archives fuel usage and the number of miles driven in a given state or province. Truckers can use this information to fill out logbooks, forms and tax materials. This data can be exported from the unit and can be beneficial in submitting the quarterly International Fuel Tax Agreement Documentation (IFTA) truck drivers are required to report.

Fleet Management Interface Compatible

?

The?dezl?760 allows truck drivers to recordtheir Hours of Service (HOS) and it warns of violations in advance. It is also compatible with the Garmin Fleet Management Interface (FMI) and can be integrated with a telematics data transponder manufactured by a Garmin authorized partner. This provides a digital solution that complies with theFederal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations for Automatic on-board Recording Devices (AOBRD).

?

Real-Time Information via Smartphone Link

Garmin Smartphone Link for Android smartphones solves the problem ofhaving to pay for an extra data plan to receive real-time information on a navigation device?[2]. It utilizes the existing data connection of a smartphone by simply pairing it to the?dezl?760 via Bluetooth?. Users can then access real-time information right from their?dezl unit, such as traffic, images from traffic cameras, weather, parking, fuel prices and more. GarminSmartphone Link is available at no cost in the Android Market and includes several free live services as well as premium content available through subscriptions.

Building upon Garmin?s more than 20 years of experience in thenavigation space, the dezl 760 also features many of the company?s signature navigation features such as photoReal junction views with realistic images of upcoming complex junctions, lifetime map updates?[3]?and lifetime traffic?[4].

The dezl 760 is expected to become available in the fourth quarter of 2012?[5]?and will have a suggested retail price of $399.99. For more information visit?http://www.garmin.com/dezl.

The?dezl 760?is the latest solution from Garmin?s consumer automotive segment, the leading worldwide provider of portable navigation devices for automobiles and motorcycles. From turn-by-turn navigation and fast and accurate search capability to traffic avoidance andlane guidance, Garmin?s user-friendly PND solutions have innovative features that provide time- and fuel-saving benefits to meet the demands of everydaydriving.

[1]?Garmin Smartphone Link includes several free live services as well as premium content available through subscriptions.

[2]?User?s data plan charges, if any, will apply. Contact your mobile service provider for more information aboutyour service plan?s data and roaming rates.

[3]?Lifetime Maps entitles you to receive up to 4 map data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on?the Garmin website, for 1 compatible Garmin product until your product?s useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter. For the meaning of a product?s ?useful life? and for other important terms and conditions, please see?http://www.garmin.com/us/maps/us/numaps_lifetime.

[4]?Lifetime traffic extends for the useful life of your Garmin traffic receiver or as long as Garmin receives traffic data from its traffic supplier, whichever is shorter. A traffic receiver?s ?useful life? means the period during which the receiver (a) has the required technical capabilities to utilize current traffic data service and (b) is capable of operating as intended without major repairs. Traffic content not available in all areas.

PFT: Urlacher won't discuss alternative knee therapy

Jeff OtahAP

As the Jets continue to try to figure out how to fix their right tackle spot, the guy they thought would handle it is trying to get his career back on track.

Former Panthers first-round pick Jeff Otah, whose trade to the Jets was negated when he failed a physical, has been working out in Cleveland with LeCharles Bentley to try to get his feet back underneath him.

?I believe he?s definitely going to be ready this season,? Bentley told Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. ?At what point in the season, I?m not sure. As a former player going through my own medical issues, it wasn?t until I took a step back and let some of my own personal baggage go, with my particular situation, [that] my body really started to heal. And I think that?s similar with Jeff.?

Otah played just four games the previous two years because of knee problems, but there were conditioning issues as well. The Jets were willing to risk a conditional seventh-rounder on him, but after a week of standing around, they sent him back to the Panthers, who promptly cut him.

And in what must be a surprise to the Panthers, Bentley said Otah has ?a workman-type mentality, which is what he needs right now.?

?To go through what he?s gone through, it wasn?t exactly easy,? the former Saints and Browns center said.

Bentley said Otah?s already down 12 pounds to 340 since arriving. They prepare three meals a day for him at Bentley?s facility, and he doesn?t work out until he eats breakfast.

He also punches a clock, and watches film of the days when he played to his draft grade in Carolina.

?As good as he was, he wasn?t the best he?s going to be,? Bentley said. ?And once he understands that, I think it really drives home the point that, ?I?m here for a purpose.? Jeff Otah needs time here to get himself, not just back into the league, but back being the best player he can be. When he?s the best player he can be, he?s going to be pretty damn special.?

Getting him back on the field would be an achievement, and a pretty good advertisement for Bentley?s ability as a coach and a mentor.

Get back every bit of lost data from Windows - Data Recovery Software

Microsoft Windows is the most popular operating system which uses File Allocation Table (FAT) and New Technology File System (NTFS) file system to store and retrieve data from hard disk or any other storage medium. While using and exposing various applications, you frequently face various kinds of data loss/inaccessibility problems.

You may come across a number of possible instances of data loss, while working with the windows operating system. The main causes of such type of data loss issues are accidental file deletion, sudden system shut down, virus/malware attack, file system corruption, operating system malfunction etc. These critical conditions may lead to inaccessibility or permanent loss of valuable data.

To avoid any future problem associated with OS corruptions and data loss, you should take regular back up because this is the best technique to avoid those errors that arise due to OS corruption. Africa leaders mourn death of Ethiopia's Meles Zenawi

African leaders on Tuesday mourned the death of Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi after the strongman's more than two decades in power.

Meles, a former rebel fighter who came to power in 1991 after toppling the bloody dictatorship of Mengistu Haile Mariam, had not been seen in public for two months, and had been reported to have been sick in a hospital in Brussels.

"Prime Minister Meles Zenawi passed away yesterday evening at around midnight," said government spokesman Bereket Simon.

"He has been struggling to be healthy in the last year... one of the best things about him was that he never considered that he was ill and he was up to the job every time, every day, every evening."

Meles, who was 57, had last been seen in public at the G20 summit in Mexico in June. Bereket would say only that he had died "abroad".

"He had been recuperating well, but suddenly something happened and he had to be rushed to the ICU (intensive care unit) and they couldn't keep him alive," he said.

Deputy Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, 47, will take over interim power.

"According to the Ethiopian constitution the deputy prime minister will have to go to parliament and take the oath, and the government is organising the parliament to be summoned as soon as possible," Bereket said.

Hailemariam, 47, has been deputy prime minister and foreign minister since 2010, and was previously special advisor on social affairs to Meles.

Unlike many core members of the ruling party, he does not hail from the far north of the country but from the Southern Nation, Nationalities and People's Region, the most populous of Ethiopia's nine ethnic regions.

Ethiopia has declared a state of national mourning, but has not fixed a date for a funeral, said Bereket, adding that "everything is stable" in Ethiopia following the news.

Diplomats and analysts in Addis Ababa say it has not been clear how the government has been run since Meles was reported to have fallen sick in June.

The position of president is largely honorific and Meles, a former rebel fighter who came to power in 1991 after toppling the bloody dictatorship of Mengistu Haile Mariam, held the real political power.

Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga told the BBC that Meles had been "a great leader" but said he also "fears for the stability of Ethiopia upon his death."

"The Ethiopian state is very fragile," he said. "I don't know if they have sufficiently prepared for his succession... but one would hope they could contain the various factions within the government so that the transition is smooth."

On paper, Meles's government has fostered a policy of ethnic federalism, devolving significant powers to regional, ethnically based authorities, but central control remains firmly in the hands of the ruling party.

But his death also leaves a major power gap in the Horn of Africa, with Ethiopia playing a key role in the fortunes of many of its neighbours.

Ethiopian troops invaded Somalia for a second time last year -- after a US-backed invasion in 2006 -- and Ethiopia is supporting the fight against Somalia's Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab insurgents.

Meles's death could also potentially see changes in the relationship with arch-foe Eritrea, which split from Ethiopian rule in 1993 before the two spiralled into a bitter 1998-2000 border war in which tens of thousands died.

A peace deal led to a tense standoff, with Meles refusing to pull troops from the border town of Badme, even after an international court ruled the town belonged to Eritrea. The town has been the source of festering discontent between the two nations ever since.

Meles also played a key role in brokering peace efforts between newly independent South Sudan and its former civil war foe Sudan.

"He was one person who could say in black and white what the position of both countries was -- and was respected by both," South Sudan's Information Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin said, praising his "strategic role".

Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki called Meles a "pragmatic and visionary" leader who helped stabilise his country and placed it on the path of economic growth, adding that his death is a "devastating loss".

"On behalf of the government and the people of Kenya, I convey our deepest sympathies," Kibaki said in a statement, adding Meles' leadership and negotiation skills would "forever be missed across the region and Africa."

Meles played a key part in brokering peace efforts between newly independent South Sudan and its former civil war foe Sudan, a role praised by South Sudan's Information Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin.

"He was one person who could say in black and white what the position of both countries was -- and was respected by both," Benjamin said.

"To South Sudan it is a sad story. He was great, not only in our strategic relations between South Sudan and Ethiopia, but also as chairperson of the African Union, tasked with finding peace between Sudan and the newly independent South," he said.

Uganda was "shocked and saddened" by the death of Meles, said Asuman Kiyingi, state minister for regional cooperation, adding it was a "big loss for the whole of Africa".

"He has been so instrumental in finding solutions to African problems," Kiyingi told AFP, noting Meles' support for African Union forces battling Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab insurgents in Somalia.

Ethiopian troops invaded Somalia for a second time last year -- after a US-backed invasion in 2006 -- and Ethiopia is supporting an AU force's fight against the Shebab.

Kiyingi said that Uganda expected any new administration to continue its current partnership with the AU force -- where Ugandan forces play a key role -- to help stabilise Somalia.

South African President Jacob Zuma praised Meles as "a strong leader, not only for his country but on the African continent" and the Horn of Africa in particular.

"It is an absolute tragedy for Africa and the people of Ethiopia to mourn such an exceptional leader who contributed as an active role-player in various continental and global initiatives, especially in playing host to the African Union," Zuma said in a statement.

Noodle-slicing robots invade restaurants, steal jobs

14 hrs.

As China?s economy continues to grow,?albeit at?slowing rate, finding workers willing to perform the repetitive task of slicing noodles into pots of boiling water is becoming difficult, according to restaurateur Cui Runguan who built a robot to do the job.

The robot, Chef Cui, works akin to set of windshield wipers going back and forth, shaving off noodles with up and down movements, he explains in a video brought to our attention by Eater.?

The robot costs about $2,000, which is less than half the $4,700 a year a noodle slicer can expect to earn in China, Runguan notes. He?s already sold about 3,000 units.

?The young people don?t want to work as chef to slice noodles because this job is very exhausting,? he says. ?It is the trend that robots will replace men in factories. It is certainly going to happen in sliced-noodle restaurants.?

Customers give the robot?s noodles good reviews, but one has to wonder how long until Chef Cui too tires of slicing noodles. Those yellow eyes may suggest not much longer. We?d hate to see what happens when a mad noodle robot is set loose with its shaver.

Complete Guidelines to Health and Fitness: What Is Norovirus ...

Noroviruses, also known as Norwalk-like viruses, SRSV (small round structured viruses, are part of a group of viruses from the family Caliciviridae that are the most common cause of stomach upset (gastroenteritis) in the USA, Great Britain and Western Europe; about 90% of epidemic non-bacterial outbreaks of gastroenteritis around the world. Sometimes referred to as winter vomiting disease, norovirus infection often affects people during the winter months. However, people may be affected at any time of year.

After a person has a norovirus infection, immunity is only temporary - about 14 weeks - and usually incomplete. Individuals with blood type O are more susceptible to infection, while those with types B and AB are partially protected. Given the genetic variability of noroviruses, individuals are likely to be repeatedly infected throughout their lifetimes. However, experts say that having recurring infections does eventually provide some protection from future infection.

Norovirus infection outbreaks more commonly occur in closed or semi-closed communities, such as prisons, dormitories, cruise ships, schools, long-term care facilities and overnight camps - places where infection can spread rapidly from human-to-human or through tainted food and surfaces. Infection outbreaks may also occur from food that was handled by an infected person.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) it is estimated that at least 50% of all foodborne outbreaks of gastroenteritis can be attributed to noroviruses. The National Health Service (NHS), UK, estimates that approximately between 600,000 and 1,000,000 British people every year are infected.

The norovirus can spread via human contact with an infected person, through contact with contaminated surfaces or objects, or by consuming contaminated water or food.

According to the CDC, USA, the majority of foodborne norovirus infection outbreaks most likely arise through direct contamination of food by an infected handler immediately before its consumption. Outbreaks have often been linked to cold food consumption, including salads, sandwiches and bakery products. Such liquid items as salad dressing or cake icing have also been implicated as outbreak causes. Sometimes oysters from contaminated waters have been linked to widespread gastroenteritis outbreaks.

Waterborne outbreaks of norovirus infection in community settings have commonly been caused by sewage contamination of wells and recreational water, says the CDC.

According to Medilexicon's medical dictionary:

Caliciviridae is "A family of naked icosahedral single-stranded positive sense RNA viruses 30-38 mm in diameter associated with epidemic viral gastroenteritis and certain forms of hepatitis in humans."

What are the signs and symptoms of a norovirus infection?

A symptom is something the patient feels and reports, while a sign is something other people, such as the doctor detect. For example, pain may be a symptom while a rash may be a sign.

Norovirus infection causes gastroenteritis - inflammation of the stomach and the small and large intestines.

Norovirus infection signs and symptoms include:

  • Nausea - usually the first symptom
  • Vomiting - sometimes violent and sudden
  • Stomachache (abdominal pain)
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Watery or loose diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Generally feeling unwell and lethargic (malaise)
  • Fever/chills, usually mild
  • Aching limbs
  • Headache
  • In rare cases patients may lose their sense of taste
During the brief period when symptoms are present people can feel very ill and vomit, often violently without warning, many times a day.

Signs and symptoms, which generally last from one to three days usually appear about 24 to 48 hours after initial infection (incubation period of 24 to 48 hours) - in some cases the incubation period may only be 12 hours. Sometimes the diarrhea can last longer than three days.

An individual's feces (stools) may still have noroviruses for some time after they have recovered. According to the CDC, USA, the virus can be in the stool and vomit of infected persons from the day they start to feel ill to as long as 2 weeks after they feel better.

It is possible to be infected and have no signs or symptoms. In such cases, the person is contagious (can pass it on to other people).

Diagnosing norovirus infection

In the vast majority of cases diagnosis is based on the patient's signs and symptoms alone. The norovirus can be identified by testing a stool sample

Treatment for norovirus infection

Doctors tend to let the norovirus infection run its course. No specific therapy exists for norovirus gastroenteritis.

Experts say that fasting will not speed up recovery. Therefore, patients should eat a light diet with foods that are easy to digest, such as rice, bread, soups or pasta. Babies should be given what they would normally eat.

It is important to replace the fluids that are lost through vomiting and/or diarrhea, especially with very young children and elderly people. Young children and elderly patients are particularly susceptible to dehydration. Patients who are not able to drink enough liquids may need to receive fluids intravenously.

What are the risk factors for norovirus infection?

A risk factor is something which increases the likelihood of developing a condition or disease. For example, obesity significantly raises the risk of developing diabetes type 2. Therefore, obesity is a risk factor for diabetes type 2. The following risk factors may increase a person's risk of becoming infected with the norovirus:
  • Weakened immune system - people whose immune systems are impaired, such as organ transplant recipients or individuals with AIDS have a higher risk of becoming infected and developing symptoms.
  • Living in a house where food hygiene procedures are not properly observed
  • Living with a child who goes to a child care center or attends preschool
  • Staying in hotels, cruise ships, vacation resorts where there are lots of people together
  • Living in in closed or semi-closed communities, such as nursing homes, hospitals or retirement centers

What are the causes of norovirus infection?

Noroviruses are shed in the feces (stools) and vomit of infected people and animals.

The infection can be transmitted by:

  • Consuming contaminated foods
  • Consuming contaminated water
  • Touching an infected person with your hand and then touching your mouth
  • Touching a contaminated surface with your hand and then touching your mouth
It is not easy to eliminate noroviruses because they can survive in both hot and cold temperatures, and are resistant to many disinfectants. Food and drinks can become contaminated with norovirus very easily because the virus is very small, and also because it probably takes fewer than 100 norovirus particles to make a person ill.

What are the possible complications of norovirus infection?

In the vast majority of cases a norovirus infection resolves itself within a few days and has no complications.

Less commonly, the following complications may occur:

Some people are unable to drink enough liquids to replace those lost through vomiting and/or diarrhea, and may become dehydrated and require special medical attention. Young children, the elderly, and individuals of any age who are unable to take care of themselves are especially vulnerable. Examples of oral rehydration fluids (ORF) include: Infalyte, Kao Lectrolyte, Naturalyte, Oralyte, and Pedialyte. A double-blind trial of oral rehydration solutions for children with diarrhea and vomiting related to acute viral gastroenteritis found that Gatorade is as effective as Pedialyte in correcting dehydration and improving bowel symptoms.

Prevention of norovirus infection

Methods of prevention of the spread of foodborne noroviruses is based on the provision of safe food and water. Noroviruses can survive freezing, as well as temperatures as high as 60C (140F). Some people may even become infected after eating steamed shellfish. Noroviruses can survive up to 10 ppm chlorine, levels much higher than that found in current public water systems.

In spite of these features, experts say that fairly simple measures of personal and food hygiene substantially reduce foodborne transmission of noroviruses.

The following steps are known to considerably reduce the risk of norovirus infection:

  • Handwashing - wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and warm water, especially after going to the toilet, changing a diaper (UK: nappy), and before preparing meals.
  • Possibly contaminated surfaces - clean them with disinfectant, preferably a bleach-based household cleaner. It is important to heed the instructions that go with the product. When possible, let the bleach remain on the surface for about ten minutes.

Infected people may often vomit violently, without warning (the vomit is infectious). Any surfaces near the vomit should be thoroughly cleaned promptly.

  • Raw foods and food in general - if you are going to eat raw foods make sure they are from a reliable source. Avoid shellfish that may have come from contaminated waters. If you steam oysters your chances of becoming infected are significantly reduced.

Any foods that may have been prepared by someone who was sick should be thrown out. Carefully wash fruit and vegetables.

  • Infected feces and vomit - make sure they are flushed away and clean the surrounding toilet area immediately with a bleach-based household cleaner.
  • Clothing and bed clothes - if they could have become contaminated wash with hot soapy water.
  • If you are infected - stay at home, especially if your job involves handling food.
  • Disposable towels - if you are especially vulnerable to infection, e.g. you are caring for an infected person, use disposable paper towels to dry you hands rather than cloth ones; the virus may survive for some time on objects.
  • Healthcare facilities - for example, hospitals should focus on methods to limit transmission by isolating patients.
  • Travelling - if you are travelling abroad, and sanitation is suspect, only drink bottled water, even for brushing your teeth. Avoid buffets and uncooked foods.
  • Disinfecting drinking water - if you suspect your water may be contaminated it is possible to disinfect it before consumption:

Syrian forces kill 23 rebels in town near Damascus

BEIRUT (AP) ? Government forces stormed a rebel-held town outside Damascus Tuesday after days of fierce fighting, killing at least 23 fighters, according to an activist group and a rebel spokesman.

In Aleppo, a Japanese TV reporter was killed Monday while covering the fighting in Syria's largest city. She was the first foreign journalist to die in the city since clashes between rebels and regime forces erupted there almost a month ago.

In neighboring Lebanon, where the civil war in Syria has been spilling across the border, security officials said clashes between supporters and opponents of President Bashar Assad have left two dead and as many as 45 wounded. The army said the injured include nine Lebanese soldiers.

Damascus and its suburbs have witnessed a dramatic spike in fighting over the past month. And regime forces were further stretched when a major battle for control of the northern city of Aleppo erupted around the end of July. Before that, the fighting had been concentrated outside the big cities during the 17-month-old uprising.

It has proved difficult for Assad's forces to put down the rebel challenge in the big cities, a sign that the regime's grip on power over the country is loosening.

The Local Coordination Committees activist group and a rebel spokesman said regime troops entered the rebel-held town of Moadamiyeh at dawn from four points. They searched homes looking for rebels. The rebel spokesman asked to be identified by his first name only, Ahmed. He said three men in their late 20s and early 30s were shot dead execution style in the town soon after its fall in the hands of the regime forces.

The report could not be independently verified.

Moadamiyeh, west of the capital Damascus, has been under siege for more than two weeks. Its capture followed days of intense fighting and shelling by government troops.

Japan's Foreign Ministry confirmed overnight that veteran Japanese war correspondent Mika Yamamoto was killed in Aleppo. She worked for The Japan Press, an independent TV news provider that specializes in conflict zone coverage.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Masaru Sato said the 45-year-old was hit by gunfire while she and a colleague were traveling with rebels from the Free Syrian Army, who are fighting to topple the Assad regime.

Yamamoto had covered the war in Afghanistan after 2001 and the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq from Baghdad as a special correspondent for NTV, according to the Japan Press website.

In northern Syria, an activist who goes by the name Abu al-Hassan said warplanes and helicopters attacked a number of towns and villages north of Aleppo early Tuesday, killing two civilians, including a young boy, and damaging homes. Several people were wounded.

After strafing a number of villages overnight, government fighter jets dropped two bombs on a residential part of the village of Marea, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) north of Aleppo, Abu al-Hassan said via Skype.

Amateur videos posted online showed a huge gray cloud of smoke rising over the village and a crater in a road that was strewn with rubble and two houses whose ceilings had collapsed. Residents were searching through the rubble for survivors and carrying the wounded to pickup trucks. A second video showed a number of people, including a small boy, with serious injuries.

The videos could not be independently verified.

Marea is a relatively quiet farming village in the Aleppo countryside that was not known for being a hub of rebel activity although one rebel group runs a prison in one of the village's schools.

"Since the strike, all I can hear outside are cars coming and going," Abu al-Hassan said. "Actually, most of them are going."

In Lebanon, officials said fighting broke out Monday night between supporters and opponents of Assad in the northern city of Tripoli and it continued on into Tuesday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The mostly Sunni city also saw gun battles in May, when fighting over Syria killed eight people. The latest clashes are between gunmen from the Sunni neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen and the next door district of Bab Tabbaneh, which is mostly populated by followers of the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Assad is a member of Syria's Alawite minority, while rebels fighting his regime are predominantly Sunnis.

The streets around the two districts were sealed off by roadblocks to keep people away from the line of snipers' fire, but life went on normally in the rest of the city despite the occasional sound of gunfire.

Associated Press correspondents Ben Hubbard in Gaziantep, Turkey, and Bassem Mroue, in Tripoli, Lebanon, contributed to this report.

PFT: Is Saints' Payton really that intimidating?

Indianapolis Colts v Pittsburgh SteelersGetty Images

Colts rookie Andrew Luck seems like the kind of quarterback who?s not going to let a bad pass or a bad quarter or a bad game rattle him.

But he also showed there are a few things he has to work on in the Colts? 26-24 loss to Pittsburgh.

Luck has a degree of polish many passers do not have when they walk in the door. But he also hasn?t seen the things he will see, and that was evident in the early going against the Steelers.

His second interception was off the hands of rookie wide receiver T.Y. Hilton, and obviously not his fault. The first, however, was all him.?Luck zoomed in on his receiver, didn?t drive off his back foot and it was picked off by Ike Taylor and returned for a touchdown.

It?s the kind of pass he has to avoid making, as he doesn?t have the kind of elite arm strength to get away with such mistakes. That?s not to say he?s noodle-armed. His arm is sufficient. Not great, but strong enough, and coupled with his smarts, should enable him to be quite good.

But he?s young. The mistakes will happen.

But the fact he led touchdown drives after each of the picks shows he?s got a little something about him. He was 8-of-9 for 96 yards passing after the second one. That?s amnesia, and that?s special for a kid his age.

Here are some other things we learned on Sunday Night Football.

1. The league can say whatever it wants about the quality of replacement officials.

But even if they?re able to cram the rulebook the way I did for college exams and spit it back for the short term, there are important things they aren?t proving able to do.

First and foremost is executing the player-safety function of the job.

When Colts wide receiver Austin Collie left the game in the first half after taking a shot to the head from linebacker Larry Foote, but that was the first. Cornerback Ike Taylor got him high as well. If it?s a concussion, it?s four in the last two years for Collie.

Those are the shots the real refs are now conditioned to be vigilant for, and the replacements aren?t getting it done.

2. Everyone keeps saying they expect holdout wide receiver Mike Wallace to roll in any day now.

Maybe he should hurry, because the Steelers didn?t exactly look like they missed him.

The Steelers have already given Antonio Brown a spite contract in Wallace?s absence, then started funneling the ball his way.

Brown?s 57-yard touchdown catch-and-run, on national television, is the kind of thing that could get Wallace packing a bag and heading to Pittsburgh sooner rather than later.

3. Veteran Colts wideout Reggie Wayne?s going to move around more than he ever has this year, and he can still be a dangerous weapon.

It?s just going to take some time getting used to watching him go in motion.

The Colts don?t have the kind of protection and overall talent to go toe-to-toe with teams, so they?re going to have to use personnel groups and formations to mix it up.

And if Wayne?s willing to do stuff he?s never had to do before, that?s just part of the mix.

4. ?Speaking of that talent: Other than Wayne, the Colts receivers aren?t much to look at. But their tight ends could be something.

In Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen, they have a pair of players who could grow with Luck for years.

They?re smart to give him safe options in the passing game since he doesn?t have much on the outside.

5. Chuck Pagano?s striking the right note with this whole ?Build the Monster,? thing he?s selling, passing out shirts with the slogan and the Colts at the bottom of a power ranking.

NFL teams are so evenly clumped that you can get from bad to decent in a hurry.? Usually if it was bad enough for a coaching change, the holdovers are disgruntled and looking for an attitude change too. Picking a fight with anyone (media, opponent, the man) is a sure way to rally the troops.

The Colts aren?t going to the playoffs, but they could be better. Having an edge can be worth three or four wins.

6. Get well soon, Max Starks.

The Steelers need you.

Rookie left tackle Mike Adams might get ready at some point. That point is not now.

7.?The Florio Research Network points out that Adam Vinatieri?s 53-yard field goal before the half was a new Heinz Field record by a yard. The old mark of 52 was held by Jeff Reed.

8.?Colts backup QB Drew Stanton now has more touchdowns this preseason than Jets quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow combined.

Who?s sorry now?

9. Sometimes it takes lower-case L luck. The Colts had a special teams meeting in the backfield, and the game-winning field goal by the Steelers still crept across. No real explanation, and the grin on Mike Tomlin?s face said it all.

Duke Energy customers to see dip in utility hikes

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Duke Energy customers in both Carolinas will see a temporary reprieve in utility rate hikes. The North Carolina Utilities Commission approved rate adjustments that will reduce the bill of a typical residential customer by about $2.50 a month starting Sept. 1. That will partly offset a $7 monthly increase implemented in February. In South Carolina, Duke has proposed a decrease that would effectively wipe out a $6 monthly rate increase approved in January. The changes don't affect customers of Progress Energy Carolinas, now a Duke subsidiary. The dip likely won't last. Duke and Progress plan to seek general rate hikes in both states later this year. Rates in both Carolinas are adjusted each year to reflect changing fuel costs.

Double check every step you take to ensure this does not occur.

TIP! Don?t pay for the consultation with a lawyer who practices bankruptcy law; ask a lot of questions. Most lawyers provide a consultation for free, so consult with many of them before picking which one you want to hire.

When you speak with a bankruptcy attorney, it is important that you tell him everyone that you owe significant amounts of money too. You probably know that you need to disclose consumer debt and medical debt, but you might not realize this means you need to disclose any debt you owe individuals, as well, even family.

TIP! Generally bankruptcy is filed when a person is facing insurmountable debt. If you find yourself needing to file for bankruptcy it is important to familiarize yourself with the state laws.

Once a few months have passed after your bankruptcy, contact the three major credit reporting agencies and request copies of your report. Look to see that the reports have accurately documented your discharge and other information. If any discrepancies appear, check on them immediately. This will allow you to start fixing your credit.

TIP! Because bankruptcy is such a challenging time that a great deal of stress, both mental and emotional, may be involved. If you want to protect yourself from stress, see to it that you hire a good attorney.

Make a list of all of your concerns before you see your lawyer for the first time about your bankruptcy. Most lawyer will only meet with you for an hour before charging you for their services. You can save yourself a lot of aggravation and money if you come up with a list of concerns and have questions ready to ask before speaking with the attorney. Do not leave until you know you have a grasp on the situation.

TIP! Do not use your retirement fund or savings to pay off creditors. You should always keep money saved for worse times.

Before filing for bankruptcy, hire a qualified attorney. With all the ins and outs of bankruptcies, it can be hard to grasp all the knowledge. When you engage the services of a bankruptcy lawyer, you can be assured of getting the help your need to proceed correctly.

TIP! Some good personal bankruptcy advice is to think twice about getting a divorce when you are in a difficult financial situation. Many people tend to get divorced and have to immediately file for bankruptcy due to not foreseeing future financial trouble.

Although people don?t want to file bankruptcy, it?s sometimes necessary. Having studied the information in this article, hopefully you are better prepared to deal with the bankruptcy process. It will be a little easier to face bankruptcy after learning from people who have experienced it

Three UK updates SIM-only plans, unlimited data now starts at ?12.50 per month

Android Central

A rather large box arrived with us today, courtesy of Three UK. The surprise package was to signify the network's updated SIM-only plans, which have recently been re-vamped. We all love a bargain, and the prices are certainly pretty friendly towards heavy data users, as we see a reduction in the minimum cost of Three's "All You Can Eat" data plans. Customers can now pick up a SIM on a 30-day contract with unlimited data for as little as £12.50 per month. You also get 5000 SMS and 200 minutes as part of the deal, so the new deal shaves a few pounds off previous packages, though you also lose around 100 minutes.

So the number of minutes you need each month will dictate the plan you require. There are three plan options with nine price points, each with increasing numbers of bundled minutes.

The Ultimate Internet Plans range from £12.50 to £15.50 per month, all with the same All You Can Eat data and 5000 SMS. Included minutes range from 200 to 600 per month, and you get a discount if you take the 12 month contract instead of a 30 day deal. The One Plan is still very much in full affect and remains at £25 per month. Again, data and SMS is the same as previously mentioned but in addition you get 2000 minutes -- more than enough for most people I would imagine -- in addition to inclusive tethering.

The final option is the Essential Internet Plan, and these are designed for customers who are not so reliant on data consumption. prices range from £9.90 to 12.90 per month and data allowances are either 500mb or 1GB per month. Once again, voice calls and SMS varies depending on the package.

For more information jump on over to Three and check out the deals on offer.

'Cold' solar loops may help solve corona puzzle

THE surface of the sun is a pretty cool place. At least when you compare it with the corona, the sun's upper atmosphere, which is nearly 400 times hotter.

This huge temperature differenceMovie Camera has long been a mystery, but a newly discovered feature of the sun's magnetic field may help us get to the bottom of things.

The sun's tangled magnetic field includes huge loops that arch from the surface into the corona. We can see the loops because bright surface plasma flows along their curves.

Richard Frazin at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and his team were measuring the temperature of coronal loops during a solar minimum, a quiet phase which sees fewer sunspots and flares. They expected all loops to get hotter with height, since that was the case in measurements taken during more active phases.

Surprisingly, some of the loops nearest the sun's equator got colder near their tops. Frazin thinks these newly found "down loops" exist throughout the solar cycle and may be a symptom of whatever causes coronal heating (The Astrophysical Journal, DOI: 10.1088/0004-637x/755/2/86).

Clare Parnell at the University of St Andrews, UK, agrees that down loops are a new factor that any solar-heating model will need to include.
