The Memorial Day Bash

This year, our family get together was a family picnic/baby shower event. Normally family get togethers for us can become dangerous situations. One recent event involved someone going off over cheese, not cutting cheese, cubes of cheese. So the suggestion of a baby shower added event made it seem harmless... or not.
First off, this is my newest grand baby (in the tummy) and it looks as though he is over due... nope the due date is still three weeks away. I am afraid he is going to be a full grown toddler when he gets here. The father of the baby still hatching (my son) came into this world a whole two weeks over due. Just how big was he you wonder? He came?weighing 10 pounds and was 23 inches long.?He was so big they had to break his collarbone type big. I guess it could have been worse, with the problem of the gestational diabetes stuff.
?My sister in law was pregnant at the same time and we both delivered on the same day. So I have sworn that mine just held on for his cousin to get here, wasn't that my luck? Anyway this grand Memorial Day event was held in the park. Normally when we get together we have to rent places or a church hall to hold the event because no one has a house or yard that big, and there is the issue of parking. My parents have four kids x ten grand kids x six and half great grand kiddies adding in the nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins who all attend these kinds of events. So I had to be like the Welcome Committee, alerting everyone to the pregnant momma in their midst and to please refrain from using words or phrases such as: "OMG You are glowing! AND Look at your canckles! ALSO "Are you nesting yet?" I quietly told them, "She isn't glowing. It is 95 degree's outside thats sweat."?AND "She is carrying a toddler, and I can't blame her for being a little hormonal today just look at her cankles as just her mood meter today. If you see them swell anymore it would be best to use nice inside voices!"?ALSO "Uh, she is well past the nesting as you can see the nesting occurred many months ago, so lets not bring it up!" We had fun and she left with some nice parting gifts which is always nice. So, how did you enjoy your Memorial Day Weekend??
Don't forget?to catch?the?Blogger Spotlights?you will definitely not regret it. ?Also are you stuck on something to write about??Check out this?new page I have added,?Blog Hop Junkie.?There is something to write for everyone.

Tending to the animals, tending to his parents, working as many spare jobs as possible to provide the family with enough money to survive, even when, for a small period of time, he had smuggled liquor to local underground clubs and hideouts. When his parents passed away when he was only fourteen, the circus was in town. The ringmaster made him feel at home. That is, in the stables. Now he's permanently a stable hand, and as long as he keeps his nose clean, he has a home.

Role: Aerial silk performer
Appearance: Pippa is your average beauty. She had wavy golden hair that framed a flawless heart shaped face. Her eyes always seemed to be bright and full of amazement. Her beauty was undeniable. Dislikes: The smell of cigarettes, Powders of any sorts, Loose fitting clothing, Storms
Short Biography: Pippa is the great, great granddaughter of the Magnificent Elizabeth Marylou Sparks, also an aerial silk performer. Elizabeth Sparks and one of the Zurini brothers had a bit of a secret romance and Pippa likes to believe that she is the granddaughter of a performer and a ringmaster, making her "Circus Royalty". Truth be told, Pippa was actually the granddaughter of a circus performer and a common thug. Her great, great grandmother was raped in her late years as a performer. Pippa keeps this as a secret however for she loves being high up on the social ladder of the circus.

Keeping your financial affiars private with good estate planning

Nothing exposes your wealth to the world as quickly as the court system as evident by recent celebrity divorces. While you can?t necessarily protect yourself from people filing lawsuits, you can avoid the most public court of them all, Probate. But even having a Trust will not necessarily keep all private and there is more to it.

?There are two major items to protect when it comes to public exposure, your wealth and your potential incapacity,? according to estate planning attorney Gamble Parks of Fell, Marking, Abkin, Montgomery, Granet & Raney, LLP. The name of the game is ?avoiding conservatorship and probate which can be accomplished with properly effective Powers of Attorney (POA) and health care? directives to go along with a Trust,? Parks goes on to say.

People generally start their planning with a Will, but since that does not protect privacy from the court system, they usually implement a Trust. While the Trust avoids the probate court you can also accomplish that by holding ownership in assets under ?right of survivorship? title or pay on death accounts. So how does one recognize potential issues ahead of time and where to plan?

Out of Date Power of Attorney: People often times implement estate planning documents as they head into retirement and then forget about them. As people age, so do their named Trustees and power of attorneys for such things as health care and financial decisions. If the people named in the documents are no longer alive, unwilling or unable to step in when needed, court intervention may be required.

?It is a given that documents should refreshed to reflect intentions and the responsible parties to follow, but outlining triggering events to determine capacity is paramount,? according to Parks. From time to time we see situations where the estate is ?stuck.? This usually occurs when a person is no longer capable of handling their affairs and while it is clear to family, friends and advisors, the person may see things differently. If they are unwilling to relinquish control, sometimes it comes down to a court order which is just something all want to avoid.

Beneficiaries: If someone or entity is a named beneficiary in a Trust, even for a small amount, they are entitled to a copy of the document and the details of the estate. While your privacy may be protected from public view that does not mean that others are not privy to your entire financial makeup. ?If someone wants to name a charity as a beneficiary of the estate and keep their assets private, a great way to do that is via their IRA accounts,? according to Parks. While they are privy to only this one account, the charity also avoids the income taxes associated with IRA.

There are other accounts and structures that avoid probate and that can be singled out from the rest of the estate. These are generally in the form of annuity contracts, life insurance policies and pay on death (POD) accounts, all passing by beneficiary elections tied to those accounts.

Improperly Titled Assets: Getting a Trust drafted is one thing, but making sure it is properly funded is another. During the refinance process is has been common for banks to request the property be removed from a Trust (in essence they don?t want to deal with ownership other than you). ?Some people forget to put the property back in the Trust after the financing takes place,? according to Gamble Parks.

The key to keeping your financial affairs private really resides with how your own your assets, who is in charge after you are no longer able and who has the legal access to your information either by choice or by requirement. Gamble Parks reminds us that ?many issues are avoided by having current documents that are properly funded and clearly outline triggering events that name people you trust to carry out your wishes.?

Safari to South Africa with Adventures by Disney - Part 2

A few weeks ago, I began a series on a unique trip I took to South Africa with Adventures by Disney (ABD). If you've never heard of ABD, it's a unique arm of Disney Travel which creates fully planned vacations around the world. You can get caught up on the first part of my adventure here: South African Safari Part 1.

Day 5 Garden Route
Word of the Day: Knysna --Knynsna means ferns
Early 5:29 am

We met the group in the lobby where the hotel provided us a continental breakfast. We then were given a boxed lunch on the way to the bus to eat in route to the airport. When we got on our South African flight in Cape town we were served another light breakfast. I was definitely well fed and ready for the flight to our next destination.

We were met at the George Airport by our trusty bus driver who had thoughtfully driven most of our luggage the day before (so we would not have to bother with luggage hassle at the airport!). Our next stop was the scenic Fancourt hotel where we arrived about 9am and had a sprawling (you guessed it) breakfast We then went to . . .

MONKEYLAND!!

Wow, this place was awesome! (with a name like Monkeyland, it has to be good!) The monkeys are all surrendered by their owners who were overwhelmed by the difficulties of keeping these intelligent wild animals as pets, others are surplus primates from zoos.

This place is amazing. Imagine walking through your local woods, but instead of seeing squirrels everywhere there are monkeys!! There are many types of Primates here: Prosmimians (lemurs etc), New World Monkeys (Found in central and south America, all with prehensile tails), Old World Monkeys (All Monkeys from Africa and Asia) and Apes (represented in Monkeyland by Gibbons and Humans).

We were amazed and amused by these great creatures, and found out one important tip: When your guide says no food, this means dried fruit also.

One of our group took out a PIECE of a dried apple to eat quickly (diabetic and needed to raise blood sugar) and a gibbon did NOT like that it was not his and got quite close, showed his teeth and his posterior to us! At that point, the apple was quickly tossed to the offended monkey and we scampered to the gift shop. Whew!!

Birds of Eden is a short walk next door.

Birds of Eden sanctuary was created with the intention of re-homing a number of unwanted birds, giving them the opportunity to live in a more natural environment. The birds here were quite beautiful and many got quite close to us. There were also marmosets which followed us around almost like a puppy. We did not touch any of these animals, but they got rather close to us.
After our tour of Birds of Eden it was lunch time!
Good thing we had multiple small breakfasts earlier, as it was about 2pm and we were hungry. In my opinion, was one of the best meals of the trip!

Lunch at Bramon Wine Estate?fresh homemade food, great wine Lunch was set up on picnic tables in the vineyards. The food was incredibly fresh and the wine was phenomenal.

Next up was a motorcoach ride to Pezula. Normally ABD stays at a hotel in town, but this trip Pezula was our hotel.

WOW. Pezula is called the Pebble Beach of South Africa. There is a golf course running throughout the grounds, and there is even a castle you can rent!

We got to see the castle as part of our hotel tour. Nelson Mandela stayed here, as well as many rock stars and celebrities wanting privacy. We went through 5 privacy gates (with guards!) to get to the castle.

Built into the rugged cliff-face with direct access to the beach, the castle complex has its own chef, executive butler and housekeeper. I can certainly see why the rich and famous like it here!

After being wowed at the castle we went to check into our own rooms at Pezula.

Inmates rule Honduras' deadly prisons

Inside one of Honduras' most dangerous and overcrowded prisons, inmates operate a free-market bazaar, selling everything from iPhones to prostitutes.

It's more like a fenced-in town than a conventional prison, where raccoons, chickens and pigs wander freely among food stalls and in troughs of open sewage. But guards do not dare cross the painted, yellow "linea de la muerte" (line of death) into the inner sanctum run by prisoners, and prisoners do not breach the perimeter controlled by guards.

"The prisoners rule," assistant prison director Carlos Polanco told The Associated Press. "We only handle external security. They know if they cross the line, we can shoot."

The unofficial division of power at the San Pedro Sula Central Corrections Facility is mimicked throughout the country, where a Lord-of-the-Flies system allows inmates to run a business behind bars, while officials turn a blind eye in exchange for a cut of the profits they say is spent on prison needs.

This culture virtually guarantees that even in the glare of international scrutiny over a fire that killed 361 prisoners at another Honduran prison three months ago, little stands to change.

Just one month after the fire at Comayagua prison, convicts at San Pedro Sula turned on their leader, killing 14 people and taking over the prison for three weeks before officials could get inside. Less than two weeks ago another inmate was killed and 11 wounded in a brawl.

The AP this month toured the prison in San Pedro Sula, where 2,137 inmates live in a space built for 800. Journalists gained access not through the prison director but with permission from the head inmate, Noe Betancourt, who provided a team of eight prisoners as security. No guards went inside the bustling, autonomous town, where women and children mill about the stalls selling Coca-Cola, fruit, T-shirts, hammocks, shoes and rugs. Some 30 people enter from outside every day to work the market.

The guards typically keep to an area between two sets of locked doors. The first set is locked against entry to the outside world. Between those doors, and the doors to prison cells, lies the yellow line. Prisoners keep to their side of it so religiously that the doors to the indoor market and the cells are unlocked during the day.

At night, guards do venture in to lock the cells, inmate Betancourt said, but inmates have keys and crowbars, because in case of fire, "the police would run away and leave us in here."

A thickset middle-aged man who gave his prison tour accompanied by his girlfriend, Betancourt is responsible for taking charge of new inmates and explaining the fees, which include cell space.

Prices range from 1,000 lempiras ($50) for the worst cells to 15,000 lempiras ($750) for cleaner, more secure living space. Inmates who can't afford to pay anything sleep on the floors and get the worst jobs, such as cleaning.

Betancourt was "elected" to his post by his fellow inmates last month after his predecessor made the mistake of sharply raising fees.

The boss, Mario Enriquez, was widely hated for abusing prisoners, beating deadbeats or hanging others from the ceiling overnight, dogs biting at their toes. But after he hiked the costs of cells, food and other privileges, enraged inmates attacked him. They cut off his head, cut out his organs and fed his heart to his dog. Then they killed the dog, according to inmates whose account was confirmed by authorities.

Thirteen of the leader's band were murdered too, their bodies buried under mattresses and set afire.

After the killings, inmates continued to control the prison for three weeks, not allowing officials or firefighters in to investigate the blaze, according to San Pedro Sula prosecutor John Mejia. The dead bodies were handed over to the prison guards.

As in the case of the Comayagua prison fire, no charges have been filed in those deaths. At Comayagua, the prison director was dismissed, but the guards who fled and left men to burn in their cells that night were reassigned to other prisons, said Danny Rodriguez, the prison's new director.

Rodrigo Escobar Bil, an investigator with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, said the country's prisoners deserve better.

"It's likely that something grave will happen in the future in Honduras' prisons, given that the situation hasn't changed from what existed three months ago," he said after touring a prison last month.

The U.N.'s Honduras Subcommittee Against Torture reported in 2010 that corruption pervades the entire system, from prison staff to outsiders, ensuring "a silence ... a guarantee of impunity."

The prison is heavily overcrowded, with bunks bunched up side by side in large cells. Throughout the tour, prisoners could be seen visiting with their wives and playing with their children.

Prison clerks wearing blue jackets never stopped moving, carrying packages of food, tobacco or money sent from family members. In one corner, a band with an electric guitar practiced while in another a group watched Real Madrid play soccer on TV.

Everything costs.

Starting at about 75 lempiras ($3.50) a week, inmates can pay to have their floors cleaned or air conditioning repaired. They can buy beer at three times the street price, drugs and a night with a woman.

The profits are distributed among the workers, stall owners and the prison administration, Polanco said.

The administration cut is 120,000 lempiras ($6,000) a month, which pays for maintenance, gas to transport prisoners to court or the hospital and to serve better food, said Hugo Hernandez, San Pedro Sula prison administrator.

"The state gives us 13 lempiras per inmate (about 60 cents) a day for food. With that money they would starve, so I have to find a way to cover the rest," he said.

Prison officials openly acknowledge their complicity with prisoners as a fact of life in a country that spends roughly $250 per year on each of 12,000 inmates crowded into a system built for 8,000.

"For some it's corruption," Polanco said, "but for us it's the only way to keep the system from breaking apart."

Inmate Jorge Gutierrez runs a restaurant with specially designed, laminated menus featuring double hamburgers, pupusas and other popular dishes. He pays 480 lempiras ($25) a month to the prison administration to run his business, employs two fellow prisoners as waiters and said he still makes enough to support his family on the outside.

Gutierrez said when he is freed, he can rent or sell his business to another prisoner.

"No way would I want to be transferred to a new prison," he said. "I would lose my privileges."

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights said the Honduran government has all but abandoned its penitentiary system. The report drew similar conclusions as that which followed a 2004 fire in the same prison that killed 107 inmates: a tinderbox of overcrowding, overloaded electrical systems and a lack of trained personnel to respond in a crisis.

"Honduras is a country with few resources," said Honduran Security Minister Pompeyo Bonilla. "We've asked the International Monetary Fund to be more flexible with its criteria for issuing new debt so we can deal with our prison problem."

At Comayagua, the fire spread quickly, fueled by clothing, bedding, cooking oil and other belongings of prisoners in rows of bunks only inches apart.

The same conditions exist in San Pedro Sula, where the human rights commission also condemned as deplorable its lack of hygiene and adequate food and potable water.

Fernando Ceguera, a prisoner who maintains the electrical system, showed 12 overloaded transformers that leak oil and spark whenever it rains. "They could explode at any minute," he said.

Assistant Security Secretary Marcela Castaneda recently said in Washington that Honduras plans to build at least two new penitentiaries, noting that some facility are far more overpopulated than San Pedro Sula, one as much as 235 percent over capacity.

But the plans lack financing. San Pedro Sula has had a committee to build a new prison for 10 years and is still waiting for the state to give it property to build on.

Prison boss Betancourt, meanwhile, said he is already working on a design and getting price quotes to build new cells in the current facility, adding a second story above its chapel and dining room.

"Working ourselves with $10,000," said Betancourt, "we can expand the capacity of the prison by 500 inmates."

China: Xi Jinping's new generation, Li Datong

The imminent transition of power in Beijing will see a new ruling group arrive in power. But?does its background and formation prepare it for the scale of China's political and economic challenge, asks Li Datong.

2012 is something of an election year worldwide. As many as twenty-five presidents will have been elected by the time it ends, including heads of state of some of the world's most important countries: the United States, Russia, France...and the People's Republic of China. What is different about China, however, is that the election here is (as usual) held not by popular vote but confined to a core group at the centre of power. The identity of the new leader depends not on the people's support but to a considerable extent on the balance of forces inside the central committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

If the identity of many of presidents is unknown until the people have delivered their verdict, in China the choice of the next head of state (and general secretary of the party) is known in advance. Unless there is a major, unforeseeable reversal, a key party congress towards the end of 2012 will select Xi Jinping as the designated successor of Hu Jintao. There is a difference, though, with past experiences of transition, when the new leader emerged from an elderly group of senior cadres (Deng Xiaoping is the classic example).

This time, according to reliable sources, the "constituency" that sanctioned Xi's appointment was composed of hundreds of senior party officials. True, the process by which he got to be nominated at all is less clear - a kind of black-box operation; but the very fact that his preferment will have ultimately required an election (albeit a limited one) to give him legitimacy suggests that the basis of the transfer of power in China has begun to respond to changing times.

But if the Xi Jinping era is about to begin, it also means the Hu Jintao era is coming to an end. How to evaluate the past decade, and what signals does it offer for the next period?

A new cadre

In my view, these ten years have been a period of lack of progress and the absence of political reform, which has meant that a backlog of various social problems (such as growing official corruption) has accumulated. The resulting tensions in society carry an enormous cost, including financial (with huge spending on domestic security, approaching the level of military expenditure). The overriding concern of this generation of leaders with ensuring "stability" has made them afraid of undertaking real action.

Why is that? The reason is that Hu Jintao and his colleagues in the heart of Chinese state power - the politburo's standing committee - share almost the same background. They moved through the education system in an entirely closed environment which prioritised obedience, imparted selective information, valued technical subjects over the humanities and social sciences, and depleted the ability to think independently.

Most importantly, they were products of a political movement, in some cases children of "pariah" families persecuted during the cultural revolution, whose background taught them to be loyal and conformist. This mental structure was reinforced by their predominant training as "technicians" or "engineers". These are not visionary or even ambitious individuals, but people who have achieved their status by a kind of miracle and whose sole purpose is to keep hold of it. Their subconscious attitude is conveyed by Hu Jintao's answer to a Japanese child who asked him why he wanted to be president: "Because the Chinese people picked me".

What are the chances that Xi Jinping's generation will be different? In some ways the signs should be positive. The rising Chinese communist leaders also grew up in an atmosphere dominated by politics, but most of their adulthood has coincided with the reform and opening up era launched by Deng Xiaoping at the end of the 1970s. They have had access to a far greater range of domestic and international information, enjoyed an affluent life, engaged in the pursuit of wealth and power, had the chance to travel to western countries and make contacts with people from them, and in some cases receive training in subjects such as economics and law. Again most importantly, they are active in politics rather then being mere products of politics.

These children of the 1980s acquired early an awareness of the dark and ruthless arts of politics as conducted in communist China, as well as of the new opportunities becoming available in business. Three in particular of the successor generation focused their commitment on politics: Xi Jinping, Liu Yuan (son of?former president?Liu Shaoqi) and Bo Xilai (son of another veteran, Bo Yibo). Almost at the same time, these three chose the same road after graduating from university by moving to the provinces and establishing a local power-base.

Two decades later, they entered the CCP's core leadership team, with Xi Jinping identified early as the likeliest candidate to be the next general secretary - and Bo Xilai as the most remarkable figure in China's political arena. Now, however, the discrediting of Bo Xilai after the extraordinary events in his Chongqing fiefdom has halted his rise - leaving the political field more open and less assured than it had seemed.

The approach of veterans' children to the summit of Chinese power should be favourable to political reform, if only because hardline political opponents will find it harder to attack their credentials. A comparison here, even though not necessarily a welcome one, is the way that Chiang Kai-shek's son launched Taiwan's political democratisation. The next leadership might in this respect have more imaginative as well as political space than its predecessor.

A bold design

In 2011, the intellectual Zhang Musheng - author of an influential study?of rural development in the pre-reform era?-?published a book that advocated the implementation of a "new democracy" in China. This was needed, he said, to address the legacy of domestic problems that had built up over the three decades of reform. The support of workers and peasants can only be assured by giving them education, healthcare, social welfare, minimum housing security, industrial training; and a shift from the current model of polluting and resource-intensive production to greater worker and farner participation in the process of economic change.

Zhang's reform design is bold, involving mutualisation of state-owned assets and widespread share-ownership by citizens, in part to solve the problem of the welfare needs of people on low incomes. He also recommends that the CCP allows open factions, independent trade unions and farmers' associations, and freedom of the press. ?Only the Chinese Communist Party can save China; only new democracy can save the Chinese Communist Party?, he writes.

The book provoked a debate among Chinese intellectuals that lasted six months. Zhang Musheng (whose mentor was Chen Yizi, adviser to prime minister Zhao Ziyang before the latter?fell following the Tiananmen incident in 1989) continued to insist that a new collective leadership in China cannot allow the current situation to continue, and that people's desire for change is an indisputable reality. Without political change, an authoritarian regime that seeks to postpone reform will risk the fate of the Soviet Union and its satellites (or, closer to home, the Qing dynasty that ended in 1911). Will China's next generation understand the extent of the crisis, and the tide of history that awaits it?

Google snags the webOS Enyo team, HP says open source plans are still on schedule

At one time the Enyo app framework was supposed to help webOS run faster and on a wider variety of devices, but as HP continues to struggle, reports have surfaced from The Verge and AllThingsD that much of the team behind it, including leader Matthew McNulty, has been hired away by Google. Numbering a half dozen or so, the immediate danger is the effect this might have on HP's efforts to open source webOS, but in a statement the company indicated it remains on track and will stick to the roadmap it announced in January. Less clear is what these employees might end up working on for Google, although Enyo's focus on web apps and HTML5 suggests the possibility they'll end up working on ChromeOS projects.

Update: The remaining members of the Enyo team have also chimed in now, with a blog post indicating yes, some "key members" have left, but that "the majority of the engineering and leadership team remains." Of course, while it continues work on the product there are some job openings now, so interested coders are encouraged to toss an application HP's way.

IT Outsourcing Is on the Rise

If you have been following developments in the world of business over the past few years, then it is not lost on you that outsourcing is the new way of doing business all over the world. The advent of the internet and information technology greatly transformed business operations as was known in the 60s and 70s. Simply speaking outsourcing is basically getting an outside company to do specific tasks for your business at a fee. Apart from incredible cost saving, there are several other strategic reasons that have made small businesses go the outsourcing way. Of special interest is the rise in firms that outsource it support. According to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), US businesses outsource IT services worth tens of billions of dollars every year.

You might have been wondering why small and medium businesses are opting to take this route. Well, here?s why: some of the key strategic reasons behind the exponential rise in IT outsourcing include maximizing the flexibility of the business model and access to new capabilities and talents. If you?ve ever operated a small business, then it?s not lost on you that some years back, businesses undertook each and every aspect of their operations. Not even the mundane letter was outsourced. Then they started by contracting the post offices to deliver their mail, commercial couriers and ultimately the internet. Outsourcing of services has developed explosively over the past few years to a point where precise functions of any business such as IT services can be carried out under the most optimal conditions anywhere in the world.

According to a study carried out by PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC), 87 percent of IT outsourcing clients are satisfied with the services offered with a majority saying they felt the outsourcing services were actually in line with the original business plan and profit projections. Ninety one percent of the clients said they?d definitely outsource their IT needs again. If you are the proud owner of a small business and you have been searching for small business outsourcing services, then you are definitely headed in the right direction. Small enterprises look to gain access to talent that they may not have or to farm out their activities to IT specialized firms that they feel can do a better job in IT related services.

Apart from accessing refined resources and talent, IT support for business helps your business expand geographically, enhance your customer relationship and improve your market segment foothold. According to the US Department of Commerce, two of the biggest challenges that businesses seeking IT outsourcing face is the cost benefit rationalization or justification and inexperience. Deliberate steps to overcome these challenges have however been taken by both IT service providers who provide IT support for business and the service seekers: they have adopted a collaborative business model that is more efficient than the traditional models.

Outsource it support and join 80 percent of small business owners in the US who outsource their IT needs in order to cut costs, gain access to talent/capabilities that they may not have such as human capital, physical resources and process excellence as well as gain strategic benefits according to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).

Space station grabs 'Dragon by the tail'

Watch NASA TV's coverage of the SpaceX Dragon cargo craft's berthing at the International Space Station.

By Alan Boyle

The International Space Station's crew reached out today with a robotic arm to grab SpaceX's Dragon cargo capsule and brought it in for the orbital outpost's first-ever hookup with a commercial spaceship.

It marks the station's first linkup with a U.S.-made spacecraft since last year's retirement of NASA's space shuttle fleet, and potentially opens the way for dozens of commercial cargo shipments. If the long-range plan unfolds as NASA hopes, U.S. astronauts could be shuttled back and forth on the Dragon or similar spacecraft within just a few years.

Today's hookup comes after Tuesday's successful launch of the Dragon atop a Falcon 9 rocket, and represents the culmination of years of planning and hundreds of millions of dollars of spending by NASA and California-based?SpaceX, known more formally as Space Exploration Technologies Corp. The company was founded a decade ago by dot-com billionaire Elon Musk, with aspirations of eventually sending humans to settle on Mars.

But first things first: Today's operation marked the first full in-space test of the robotic Dragon spacecraft's procedure for approaching the station, and for that reason, every step along the way was carefully planned out and checked over the course of several hours.?The first steps in the procedure were tested on Thursday, during a series of maneuvers that successfully brought the 14-foot-long, 12-foot-wide, gumdrop-shaped capsule within 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) of the $100 billion space station.

Today, a far more ambitious set of maneuvers brought the Dragon all the way to the station ? but the trip wasn't always easy.

The craft started out by taking up a position 250 meters (820 feet) below the station. From that vantage point, the Dragon was put through a series of maneuvers to test the station-to-spacecraft communication system. The space station's astronauts had the Dragon approach, then retreat, then approach, then hold its position.

NASA TV

A camera on the International Space Station captures a view of SpaceX's Falcon cargo spacecraft at a distance of 30 meters.

NASA

SpaceX's thermal imager provides a view of the International Space Station from 250 meters away.

After assessing the data, NASA said it wanted to do a double-check on the Dragon's thermal imagers, which are part of the rendezvous sensor system. The spacecraft was commanded to approach to a distance of 200 meters (656 feet), then stop while NASA took stock again. Space agency spokesman Josh Byerly said SpaceX's team made "minor modifications" to the thermal imaging system, just to make sure that it was providing tracking data in line with what other instruments were showing.

The Dragon was on its way to a 30-meter (98-foot) checkpoint when the team at SpaceX's Mission Control in Hawthorne, Calif., ordered the spacecraft to retreat to a distance of 70 meters (230 feet). NASA's Mission Control said the SpaceX team wanted to correct bad laser sensor readings that the Dragon was getting from a stray reflector on the station's Japanese-built Kibo laboratory.

To work around the problem, SpaceX narrowed the field of view for the laser sensor so that it wouldn't pick up light from the offending reflector.?Dragon then returned to the 30-meter checkpoint and moved in for the final approach.

When the craft reached a distance of 10 meters (33 feet), NASA astronaut Don Pettit used the station's 17-meter-long (60-foot-long) robotic arm to grab hold of the Dragon's grapple attachment at 9:56 a.m. ET.?"Capture is confirmed," NASA mission commentator Josh Byerly said.

"It looks like we've got us a Dragon by the tail," Pettit told Mission Control.

NASA says it will take another three hours or so to pull in the Dragon and get it hooked up to the station's Harmony module. NASA and SpaceX refer to this operation as a "berthing" rather than a "docking," because the Dragon is being passively pulled in rather than powering itself into the docking port.

NASA astronaut Cady Coleman, who underwent training for the berthing operation, said the robotic-arm moves had to be executed carefully to avoid damaging the Dragon or the station.?"If you stop too late, you could really hurt something," she said on NASA TV.

The berthing would put SpaceX in the company of four governmental space ventures?? NASA, the Russian Federal Space Agency, the European Space Agency and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency ? that have built vehicles capable of hooking up with the space station.?

If the operation plays out the way it's been planned, the hatch to the Dragon would be opened early Saturday morning. The station's six astronauts will unload about 1,000 pounds (460 kilograms) of cargo, including food, clothes, batteries and a laptop, plus 15 student-designed experiments. Then about 1,455 pounds (660 kilograms) of Earth-bound cargo?? including personal items from the crew as well as completed experiments and old equipment?? will be loaded up on the Dragon.

On May 31, the capsule would be detached from the station and sent back down toward a Pacific Ocean splashdown and recovery off the coast of Southern California. That part of the operation went off successfully during Dragon's first orbital test mission in December 2010, but this would mark the first-ever return of a commercial spacecraft from the space station. Russia's Soyuz capsule is the only other existing space vehicle capable of returning space station payloads.

A fully successful mission would open the way for commercial space station resupply missions to begin in earnest. SpaceX already has a $1.6 billion contract with NASA for 12 Dragon shipments through 2016.

Another company, Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corp., is developing a cargo spacecraft known as Cygnus to take on space station shipments as well, under the terms of a $1.9 billion contract. The Cygnus has yet to be flight-tested, however.

In addition to the cargo contract, SpaceX is one of four companies that is receiving millions of dollars from NASA to produce spaceships capable of carrying astronauts. In SpaceX's case, the Dragon would be modified with a launch escape system, while the other companies ? Blue Origin, the Boeing Co. and Sierra Nevada Corp.?? are working on other spaceship concepts, ranging from capsules to Sierra Nevada's mini-space plane. The first astronaut flights could take place as early as 2017.

Until that time, NASA will have to depend on the Russians to transport U.S. astronauts on Soyuz spacecraft, at a cost of more than $60 million a seat. SpaceX and other players in the commercial space race say they can meet or beat that price.

The transition to commercial operations for orbital transport is a key part of the Obama administration's plan for future space exploration.

"We?re handing off to the private sector our transportation to the International Space Station so that NASA can focus on what we do best ? exploring even deeper into our solar system, with missions to an asteroid and Mars on the horizon," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said after the Dragon's launch. "We?re committed to ending the outsourcing of work on America?s space program and bringing these jobs back to the United States."?

Great Books for Kids and Teens: It's Monday 5/21 ... - Posterous

Our crazy, hectic season continues!? Last week was a rough one for me - my husband was away on business, my mom came to visit, my son finished high school, more houseguests came for the weekend, and my younger son had the lead in his school musical!? We went to both shows, Friday and Saturday night, and Craig did an outstanding job as Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance (check out his photo below).? Lots of activity and excitement for all of us!

So, I had no time at all for reading blogs last week or for writing my own reviews or blog posts.? None of us had much reading time, either, though I squeezed in a bit in doctor's waiting rooms last week:

  • I finished the teen/YA novel Dead To You by Lisa McMann in record time.? I could hardly bear to set it down - it was absolutely compelling and original, about a teen boy who is returned to his family at 16, after being abducted at 9, and the conflicts that arise as he tries to readjust to his long-lost family.? Amazing book.
  • Now I am reading The Night Circus by Erin Morganstern, a novel I borrowed from my mom a few months ago and have been dying to read.? It's a very strange book - unique and magical - but I am becoming immersed in its characters and plot.
  • I started a new audio book last week, Ghost Knight by Cornelia Funke, a middle-grade novel about a British boy away at boarding school for the first time who encounters murderous ghosts and must enlist the help of a ghost knight to help fend them off.? It's very good so far.
  • My husband, Ken, is still reading George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones.? He says the beginning is very confusing, with dozens of different characters to keep track of; he's appreciating the lists and charts at the end!
  • Jamie, 17, finished re-reading an old favorite, Peter Raven Under Fire by Michael Molloy, a middle-grade pirate adventure.
  • Jamie also re-read The Gray Wolf Throne by Cinda Williams Chima, Book 3 of the Seven Realms series.? He loves this series and can't wait for the release of The Crimson Crown this fall!
  • Craig, 14, finished Attack of the Fiend, Book 4 in The Last Apprentice series by Joseph Delaney.? He needs to read one more book before the end of the school year - I'm not sure what he's chosen for his next one.
As I said, no time for writing reviews or other blog posts last week.? Hopefully, things will be a bit less hectic this week!

What are you and your family reading this week?

What are you reading Monday is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey with a kids/teen version hosted by Teach Mentor Texts.

Gemini capsule launched ... on a string

JP Aerospace

A 2-inch-long paper model of a 1960s-era Gemini capsule hangs from a string in front of a camera mounted on a balloon-borne platform at an altitude of more than 97,000 feet. Meanwhile, the moon hangs in the far background, sans string.

By Alan Boyle

So what if it's only a paper spaceship? This year marks the 50th anniversary of Project Gemini's christening, and you could regard this small-scale re-creation of a Gemini space mission as a fitting tribute to the times.

The original 19-foot-long Gemini spacecraft was built to accommodate two astronauts for missions that would lay the groundwork for the Apollo missions to the moon. This 2-inch-long Gemini model was built by John's Paper Models and hung from a string during one of JP Aerospace's high-altitude balloon flights in Nevada's Black Rock Desert.

"The model was flown to 97,704 feet on balloon during last month's PongSat mission. 980 student experiments were also flown," John Powell, the founder of JP Aerospace, told me in an email. The California-based venture sends payloads up to the edge of space at the end of a helium-filled balloon, and recovers the payloads after the balloon breaks.

The payloads range from mini-experiments that can fit inside a pingpong ball?? hence the name "PongSat"?? to the occasional chair or cellphone. These flights don't come anywhere close to the internationally accepted 62-mile (100-kilometer) boundary of outer space, but they do rise high enough to provide exposure to cosmic rays, the near-vacuum of near space and other conditions that can put space hardware to a rigorous test. And as you can see here, the flights provide an awesome view as well.

JP Aerospace

JP Aerospace's "Away 66" mission rises. The tiny model of the Gemini capsule can be seen hanging from the left side of the balloon-borne platform.

Meanwhile, another near-space mission has successfully sent "Star Trek" captains and celebrities into space, at least in miniaturized, plasticized action-figure form. StarTrek.com provides a photo essay chronicling the results of this month's "Send Picard to Space" balloon mission, backed by more than $6,000 in Kickstarter contributions. "The captains and equipment spent two hours aloft, 90 minutes of that in the stratosphere, until the balloon popped and the payload parachuted safely back to Earth," StarTrek.com reported. Stay tuned for the encore presentation.?

FlyClear to a Better Vacation! | Travel and Leisure

Traveling is in my blood. I love getting on airplanes and jet setting to places around the world. I work hard so I deserve to play hard, and when I play I go on vacation. I?m only twenty-one years old and I?ve been to at least 8 countries in my lifetime. With all this traveling under my belt, I?ve definitely had a lot of great experiences and picked up tips on how travel as efficiently as possible. What you wear to the airport is just as important as what you pack, and my favorite new discovery is Clear Me.

Airport security often has a negative connotation due to their strict rules and regulations. You have to make sure to take off everything so you don?t set off the metal detector, and pass your belongings through an x-ray machine. However, when I think of airport security, it just makes me think of my dad and laugh.

This one particular trip while we were on line for security the people behind us were getting antsy. My dad, a typical man, had a lot of stuff to empty out of his pockets and his shoes were giving him a hard time, so he was trying to get his stuff into the bin as quickly as he could. Well he forgot to remove his belt and the metal detector lit up. Security asked him to step aside so that they could search him. Now this is the part that makes me laugh. My dad has shed a few pounds and for reasons I can?t understand he decided to wear pants that day that were too big on him. He was asked to remove his belt and of course his pants kept falling down. What was even funnier was the security trying to politely ask him to keep his arms out every time he tried to keep his pants from falling all the way.

My mom and I real couldn?t do anything to help, so we just stood and laughed. My dad was a great sport, even joked about it himself. However, as disappointed as I am not to be able to have any more stories like this to share, my dad is grateful we discovered a program that lets you whiz by security without any hassles. You can read more about this service by clicking here.

There was a very important lesson to learn from that trip. What you wear to the airport is important. If you?re covered in metal and stuff your pockets to the brim it?s going to be a pain in the neck to get through security. The best thing to do is to dress casually, don?t wear things that aren?t really necessary, and wear shoes that are easy to take on and off. It?ll work out better for you and them in the end and make travels much more enjoyable.
