New Instagram app enhances your Facebook Timeline cover photo

Instagram is a fantastic tool to include in your content marketing plans, especially now there's the new InstaCover app.

While the photo app is all about pictures, rather than words, we recently explained in a NewsReach blog why the two seamlessly fit together. Photos can show things that words cannot as easily describe, such as a new product, behind the scenes at your company and your staff.

Photos are engaging and can help build up a rapport between your brand and your customers. For example, if you are a fashion firm, you might ask your social media fans to post a picture of them wearing the latest purchase from you. If you are in the travel sector, you could run a competition for the best snaps taken on holiday, with the winner receiving a short break or a discount off their next getaway.

Facebook recently snapped up Instagram, and now a new app has been launched that allows you to create a collage of Instagram photos for your Facebook Timeline cover picture. Called InstaCover, the app enables you to provide your fans with an overview of your business at a glance. The collage should be as eye-catching and fun as possible in order to encourage people to keep scrolling down your page.

Even better is that you do not solely have to use your own photos, which is great if you also want to show off a different side to your brand, such as your employee's favourite foods, restaurants, attractions and even pets! Customers like to feel as though they know a company, as this helps to build up trust, so adding some personal photos will help create this bond.

How images play a role in content?marketing

NewsReach's head of social media Amanda Kouwenhoven recently explained the benefits of including photos within content marketing plans.

"Sharing images allows followers a break from status updates or check-ins and enables a person or a brand to show something, rather than just tell people about it. This can create a much stronger response - for example, showing someone what you ate at a restaurant will no doubt have much more impact than just telling them what you had," she said.

People can also comment on and 'like' Instagram photos, which again creates the opportunity for your brand to respond to their thoughts.

What do you think about using Instagram as part of your content marketing plans?

True Blood Spoiler: Season 5 Supernatural Creature Is?

True Blood spoilers are hard to come by, well at least anything decent. So I am shocked to see that this seasons supernatural creature has been leaked. You will never guess what it is. Honestly, I am not that excited about this news. This season has been fantastic so far and if they don;t do this supernatural creature, just right it is going to make it super cheesy. They have done a great job in bringing in vampires, werewolves, faeries, witches, shifters, werepanthers and maenads, but this is just a bit over the top IMO. If you don’t want to know, go back NOW! SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER!!! A recent tweet from Michael McMillian, aka the Rev. Steve Newlin, has everyone in a frenzy, speculating if it is true of if he is just messing with fans. The supernatural creature soon to be joining Sookie and Eric and Bill and the rest of Bon Temp is a freakin’ dragon! There is a dragon. No joke.?@ktsammy: @McMillzz what is the new supernatural character that?s going to be joining #TrueBlood#YouMadeMe? See!! I told you! How can you pull off a dragon and make it non-cheesy?!?!?!? I hope they do though, I am so [...]

Goodell sends memo on LA stadium guidelines

By BARRY WILNER

AP Pro Football Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:25 p.m. ET June 29, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - Sensing for the first time in years that stadium issues are solvable in Los Angeles, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has established guidelines for a franchise's potential move to the area.

In a memo sent by the commissioner Friday and obtained by The Associated Press, Goodell said no single team has any "presumptive right" to play in Los Angeles and that only the league as a whole can make a decision on relocation. The league is satisfied with its current 32-team setup, although expanding to include one - or two - teams in LA is still possible.

Any franchise interested in relocating there for the 2013 season must apply between Jan. 1 and Feb. 15 of that year, and prove it has exhausted all attempts to remain in its current location. No plans are yet in place if no teams apply for 2013.

If a team applies to relocate, it should not expect a league-wide vote on the application before the NFL's annual meetings in late March.

Goodell emphasized that any new stadium must be capable of hosting two franchises. Two groups currently are competing to develop a stadium complex, one downtown and one in City of Industry.

"Given that simultaneous league-wide investment in two stadiums in the same community is unlikely," Goodell wrote, "we believe that the best approach will be a single site where an iconic facility could credibly both host two teams and provide ancillary entertainment and development opportunities."

Los Angeles has not had an NFL team since the Rams moved to St. Louis and the Raiders went back to Oakland in 1995.

The Los Angeles Times first reported details of the memo.

Any new stadium in the LA area would be attractive to franchises that struggle at the gate, are located in a smaller metropolitan area or are saddled with a bad lease in an outdated stadium. Among the teams mentioned as potentially moving have been the Jacksonville Jaguars, San Diego Chargers, Buffalo Bills, St. Louis Rams and the Raiders.

The NFL itself would love a showcase stadium where it could regularly hold Super Bowls.

Goodell even mentioned in the memo a Hall of Fame, studios for NFL Network and youth football facilities accompanying a stadium.

Any team seeking to move to LA must show it "has secured a long-term stadium solution that is financeable and preserves the league's option for use as a two-team facility."

That team also must have a viable interim stadium plan while the new building is being built; a marketing plan with respect to personal seat licenses, premium seating, and naming rights; and must give certain financial guarantees to the league.

Unlike Chicken And Pork, Beef Still Begins With Small Family Ranches

Peggy Lowe/Harvest Public Media

Barbara and Norman Roux stand in front of cattle pens on their farm outside of Moundridge, Kan., where she has raised cattle for nearly 70 years.

In the chicken and pork industries, nearly every aspect of the animals' raising has long been controlled by just a handful of agriculture conglomerates. But the cattle industry is still populated by mom-and-pop operations, at least at the calf-raising level.

Barbara McIntire Roux likes to say that she was born into the cattle business. Roux, 70, is a third-generation Shorthorn rancher in central Kansas, where the prairie pastures are thick with brome and bluestem grasses.

"We have to record about as much information on those calves when they're born as what a human baby has to have collected," Roux says with pride.

?

Roux is among the 750,000 farmers and ranchers who have what's called a cow-calf operation, and with 50 head of cattle her herd is just a little larger than the average U.S. herd size of 40.

But that small size is true only at one end of the cattle industry. In simple terms, the business is bottle-shaped ? large at the bottom and narrowing to the neck, where just four companies control the majority of the market. Roux's end of the business is the pretty, pastoral part of the cattle industry, the place schoolkids come for tours. But it's also the piece of the industry with the least amount of power over the process.

The cattle industry is shaped like a bottle ? wider at the bottom with lots of ranchers, smaller at the top with just four meatpacking companies.

As part of Morning Edition's "Meat Week," we looked at the shape of the cattle industry, from farm to feedlot to factory to grocery store. So here's how it works:

On the ranch, the calves are weaned off their mothers at 200 days old, when they weigh up to 600 pounds. Then the animals are sold to what's called a "backgrounder," a larger operation that buys the calves in groups, transitions them from weaning to feeding, and bulks them up.

"That's where these animals are placed on grass or placed in a facility in which they are grown," says Dan Thomson, a veterinarian at Kansas State University. There the cattle pack on up to 800 pounds, receive their immunizations and get prepared for the next step: the feedlot.

Great Bend Feeding Inc. houses about 30,000 cattle on 320 dusty, hot acres in central Kansas, tended by cowboys on horseback. The cattle are kept in pens made with steel and wood fencing and eat three times a day at the six miles of concrete bunks that line the corrals. They are fed grain, alfalfa and protein supplements ? a high-calorie diet that will literally fatten them. It's called "finishing."

Some of the feed is processed here on site in a steel feed mill that turns whole corn into something like a corn flake. "The reason we do that is, cattle being somewhat sensitive in the digestive system, we want to make sure it's as efficient as possible," says Andrew Murphy, CEO of Innovative Livestock Services, which owns Great Bend Feeding.

At this stage, the industry begins to get smaller. There are just 2,160 feedlots that have more than 1,000 head of cattle, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The top 25 feedlots ? which will house more than 100,000 animals ? control 47 percent of the market.

"When you have a bottle-shaped industry like we do, where you have almost 800,000 cow-calf producers down to essentially ... four packing plants, we're just the last first point in that bottleneck," Murphy says. "It makes it very difficult for anyone to break through because [meatpackers] have control of the pounds. It's not a negative comment. It's just a fact of life."

The cattle are shipped to the meatpackers when they are between 14 and 16 months old, weigh up to 1,400 pounds and, at today's prices, are worth about $2,000 each.

"Once they reach the desired fat, thickness or desired finishing point, that's when the animal goes to slaughter," Thompson says.

The cattle from Great Bend Feeding are sold to meatpacker Tyson Foods Inc. This is the neck of the bottle-shaped industry, and Tyson shares it with Cargill Inc., National Beef Packaging Co., and JBS, the world's largest beef processor. Those four companies produce 82 percent of the beef on the market.

Does this market concentration at the top mean the cattle industry will go the way of the chicken and pork businesses, where the entire process is controlled by just a few companies? That hasn't happened yet, but many ranchers fear it.

In the last 20 years, the number of farmers and ranchers who raise cattle has declined more than 20 percent, according to the USDA. The concentrated markets can constrain farmers and ranchers by limiting options, says Mary Hendrickson, a rural sociology professor at the University of Missouri.

"Often they're the ones who have the least power to negotiate better prices. If beef consumption has a downturn at the marketplace, the packers are often the ones who push changes in prices back through to the farm level," she says. "There are a lot of farmers who are disgusted with this."

So will future generations of the Roux family get to stay in the cattle business? It's hard to say. Meanwhile, those cattle raised in central Kansas and processed by Tyson will end up in your grocery store like all the rest, red meat under plastic.

The Pro's and Con's of Long Distance Relationships

I Initially wanted to let the headline of this piece be Relationships are Easy,

because I really think they have all the potential?

and ingredients to be if the two involved

would be grown up and driven more by love than ego?

and attachments,

stay out of drama,

and don't consider each other property.

We are not property,?

we shouldn?t be treated as it,?

or treat our loved one that way.

This is just a few initial thoughts about relationships in general

And now on to the tricky tricky part ??

the long distance version since this

is what I wanted to air some thoughts about.

Because lets face it,

?dating in the digital age,?

and the wonders of computers?

and cyber space has shrunk our world considerably and incredibly.

Which means that you can meet someone and fall madly in love with someone who's

on the other side of the planet ??

not just in the neighborhood library or the pub down the street.

If your neighborhood is equipped with that sort of establishments that is.

Most people I know shun the long distance version of love

and don?t really get it.

I can certainly understand that,

I didn?t either for the longest time..

But if handled with respect, care, compassion

and by putting the ever demanding ego aside,

I think it has the potential to be both a lifechanging

and wonderful experience.

But to make a thing like this work,

the things to be considered and actually ACTED on must be;

Communication,

?total transparency and honesty,

no mind games or shadow boxing,

straight talk, no secrets,

making a game plan and sticking to it,

make good use of the phone, chat lines?but

First And Foremost:

Honesty and transparency!

I happen to think that in our day and age,

giving a long distance love a chance is the equivalent

to how we went about it back in the day:

We didn?t make sex a part of the deal from the getgo,

We took the time to?well.. woo each other,

get to know each other,

to let the emotions grow?

and evolve before sex entered the scene.

And maybe, just maybe,?

a lot of our failed relationships and marriages

has a little bit to do with this?

We don?t really know each other before we tie knots

and chain each other down.

We want the pretty package wrapping without having any idea about

what?s hidden underneath.

And we want what everybody else have;

the wife/husband, the house, the kids, the car, the cabin by the lake,

the expensive pretty things that?s designed to send signals

to everybody about how successful and powerful we are.

And what it comes down to, they are just that?

Symbols of achievements..

Immediate gratification is the key word.?

In a relationship where you simply have no choice but to make the

non physical parts a priority,

we also have a unique chance of letting love and understanding,

respect and spirituality grow and evolve within it?

And this is so possible when we know that we are all One,

and we are all in each others energy all the time no matter

where we are or where we live.

All we need to do is prioritize differently?

And we need to practice more compassion,

more understanding,

more patience,

and more communication.

And because of maybe months and months of practicing these things,

by putting aside the ego,

and making each other first and last

while still understanding that both parties have a life to live in their end,

by the time the first meeting takes place

the relationship will already be on sturdy ground ?

you know each other.

Not from the outside, but from the inside..

And you know each other in a way that could possibly take years

to achieve, if ever,

by letting the ego play the starring role?

and making the physical the priority.

But that being said,

The internet is also a breeding ground for psychopaths and narcissists.

In short a breeding ground for the Cluster B disordered? who continuously

use chat rooms, any social network,

and any dating service to play out their disorders on unsuspecting victims.

So, though there are so many dangers out there,

and you would need to be careful,?

listen to your gut feelings,

(If something doesn?t add up, literally back out, and Background checks, run them!).

Read up on cyberpaths and familiarize yourself on how they operate ??

useful link at the end of this article ?

I would recommend you don?t let fear rob you of a possibly beautiful experience

even if it?s not going about it the traditional way.

Good Luck!

?

??????????????????????

?

?Absence diminishes small loves

and increases great ones,

as the wind blows out the candle

and blows up the bonfire.?

Melco Crown to develop $1bn casino in Manila | Innovate Gaming

  • Casino Business | 28th June, 2012 | Las Vegas, NV | Pagcor Entertainment City ? Video
  • Macau casino operator Melco Crown Entertainment is set to enter the prosperous Philippines market by partnering with local property developer Belle Corp., controlled by the country?s richest man Henry Sy. The deal will see the company develop a $1 billion casino resort at Manila Bay.

The deal will intensify competition in the gaming industry in Manila, where state-owned gambling authority PAGCOR is looking to develop a casino strip, launching in 2013.

Pagcor City, Manila BayBelle Corp. is one of four companies licensed to develop casinos in the Manila Bay area and construction of the us$1 billion casino resort is already well on its way. The company is in talks with Melco Crown to operate the casino at the resort, but nothing has been finalised said Vice Chairman Willy Ocier on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the developer said it is in talks with Melco Crown to operate the casino at the resort, but nothing has been finalised.

Melco Crown is a joint venture between Australian casino mogul James Packer and Lawrence Ho, the company?s CEO and son to ?The King of Gambling? Stanley Ho. Recently listing on the Hong Kong stock exchange, Melco is looking to expand through Asia with properties that use a gaming element to fund integrated entertainment facilities.

Each casino project requires a minimum investment of $1bn that can be spread over 5 years. The other concessionaires are Bloomberry Resorts, owned by local ports tycoon Enrique Razon; a joint venture between Malaysian casino company Genting Hong Kong and Philippine conglomerate Alliance Global Group; and Universal Entertainment, a pachinko company run by Japan?s Kazuo Okada.

The state is looking to build Manila into a gaming hotspot, ahead of Japan and Vietnam attracting casino operators to capitalise on the intensifying Asian market. The Philippines wants to develop gaming as one of the city?s core pillars of tourism, according to Jorge Sarmiento, COO of Pagcor.

Richard Laneda, Analyst at Manila-based CitisecOnline.com, said, ?A partnership with a seasoned and experienced foreign player will give this venture an edge and turn it into a better contender. This partnership will make SM [Henry Sy?s SM Investments Corp.]?s casino investment more promising.?

Stocks up on U.S. data, oil; euro slips pre-summit

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks rose on major world markets on Wednesday after encouraging U.S. data and a rally in crude oil prices, but the euro slipped ahead of a European summit seen as unlikely to produce a credible solution to the region's debt crisis.

Wall Street stocks logged their largest gain in a week, with the S&P 500 index rising nearly 1.0 percent. The rally came after data showed demand for long-lasting U.S. manufactured goods rose sharply more than expected in May and U.S. pending home sales hit a two-year high.

On commodity markets, U.S. crude oil prices recovered to above $80 (51.3 pounds) per barrel and Brent crude in London erased early losses as a strike by Norwegian oil workers dragged on.

The rally in oil helped accelerate gains in U.S. stocks, with shares of energy firms among the biggest gainers.

While investors welcomed the rebound, few had illusions about the market's long-term trend as the euro zone crisis rumbled on without a solution.

"Sentiment is pretty negative - when you get people this depressed markets have a tendency to bounce and that is pretty much where we are at right now," said Doug Foreman, director of equities at Kayne Anderson Rudnick Investment Management, an affiliated manager of Virtus Investment Partners in Los Angeles, California.

European Union leaders remained unusually divided ahead of the two-day summit beginning Thursday over how to stem the bloc's spreading debt crisis, now in its third year.

    EUROPEAN LEADERS AT ODDS

Bridgewater Associates, the world's largest hedge fund with $120 billion in assets, doubts Germany will back off its tough austerity stand at the upcoming EU summit in Brussels.

"For this reason, we think the popular assumption that the Germans and the ECB (which requires agreement of the key factions within it) will come through with the money to make all these debts good should not be taken for granted," the fund said in its daily market note. "This 'fat tail' event must be considered a significant possibility."

Indeed, on the eve of the EU summit German Chancellor Angela Merkel brushed aside increasingly shrill calls from Spain and Italy for emergency action to lower their soaring borrowing costs.

"I fear that at the summit we will talk too much about all these ideas for joint liability and too little about improved controls and structural measures," she said, renewing her mantra that Germany, Europe's strongest economy, should not be overburdened.

At the close, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 92.34 points, or 0.74 percent, at 12,627.01. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 11.86 points, or 0.90 percent, at 1,331.85. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 21.26 points, or 0.74 percent, at 2,875.32.

European shares also rallied on the upbeat U.S. data, closing up 1.4 percent for their largest gain since June 19.

The MSCI world equity index rose 0.9 percent, though it remained down week-to-date.

The euro edged lower, slipping against the U.S. dollar for a third straight day as it traded 0.2 percent down at $1.2467.

Growing concerns that more peripheral euro zone nations will be shut out from capital markets and expectations that fiscal austerity will drag the region into a more painful recession will see the euro stay under pressure. Any bounce toward the $1.27 or $1.28 level would attract sellers, traders said.

"I am going short euro/dollar into the summit," said Stuart Frost, head of absolute returns and currency at RWC Capital, a London-based fund manager. "The euro should be a lot lower than what it is and even if there is an agreement, chances of which are very low, the currency is headed towards $1.20."

    EURO BONDS

Debt markets continued to reflect the worsening funding outlook for many euro zone nations, with investors reluctant to increase their exposure even to safe-haven debt ahead of the leaders' summit.

Italy's six-month borrowing costs rose to 2.957 percent at auction on Wednesday, their highest since December. The spike comes just ahead of a five- and 10-year debt sale for up to 5.5 billion euros on Thursday. On Tuesday, Spain saw its short-term borrowing costs nearly triple.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was up 2/32, its yield at 1.6211 percent.

Markets had been hoping this week's summit would deliver at least a high-level agreement on greater fiscal and financial integration across the euro area that could then ultimately lead to the issuance of common euro bonds.

"It is slightly different than what we saw before other summits in the past when hopes were quite high," said Norbert Wuthe, senior government bond strategist at Bayerische Landesbank. "Now we are disappointed going into the summit and there is a positive surprise potential."

Bank bailout to spark firesale of corporate Spain

MADRID (Reuters) - The European bailout for Spain's banks will push them to sell an empire of stakes in the nation's top companies, ending a cozy culture of corporate-banking links and prompting a wider shake-up in ownership of the company landscape.

Spain formally requested euro zone rescue loans to recapitalize debt-laden former savings banks on Monday, but those who receive funds will be subject to European Union state-aid rules that include selling equity assets.

With the price of such assets languishing as the euro zone's financial crisis drags on, that will involve the likely fire sale of big chunks of Spain's corporate titans, including telecoms leader Telefonica , oil major Repsol and power firm Iberdrola .

UBS estimates 22 billion euros ($28 billion) of Spanish stakes could be up for sale, most of which is in the hands of savings banks. This represents as much as 9 percent of the capitalization of the country's blue-chip index <.ibex>.

Over the years, Spain's savings banks have gained board seats on some of the country's biggest firms, exerting a powerful role in shaping corporate and industrial strategy in sectors ranging from tourism and real estate to energy and telecommunications.

Established centuries ago to help farmers in times of poor harvests, the savings banks developed strong regional and political identities in a closely intertwined corporate and banking culture of mutual back scratching.

Banks rolled over debt for cash-strapped companies to prevent loans from going bad, while bankers earned considerable salaries for sitting on company boards.

    Not for much longer.

"They're going to have to sell. And with no light at the end of the tunnel as far as the macro, political dance, the chances of holding out for a better price increasingly look like wishful thinking," said Flemming Barton, analyst at CM Capital Markets.

    NOT IF, BUT WHEN

Bankia , which last month asked for a lifeline of 19 billion euros ($24 billion), the largest state rescue in Spanish history, will be the first to give up once-prized corporate stakes.

It owns 20 percent of tech firm Indra , 12 percent of International Airlines Group and 5.3 percent of Iberdrola, as well as big stakes in insurer Mapfre , hotelier NH Hoteles and olive oil firm Deoleo .

"Bankia is going to have to liquidate all its stakes except for Mapfre , where it has cross stakes and strategic deals," a banking source said. "This is going to put pressure on other savings banks, including La Caixa's industrial empire."

Although Barcelona-based La Caixa is not itself in need of a bailout, the shift in Spanish banking and corporate relationships will set the tone for the Catalan bank, too.

Executives at the companies held by Bankia are already taking steps to line up buyers and keep the shares from falling into undesirable hands.

In the case of Iberdrola, Chairman Ignacio Sanchez Galan said on Friday the company did not rule out buying back Bankia's stake, worth 1 billion euros, itself.

Meanwhile, IAG Chief Executive Willie Walsh has said there are "interested investors" for Bankia's stake, valued at about 420 million euros.

Bankia and its parent BFA have already recognized a 1.6 billion euro write-down on its corporate stakes. Not so for other troubled banks that will also be under pressure to sell.

An independent audit to determine the health of Spanish banks also failed to put a number on potential losses related to banks' equity stakes, meaning the sector's ultimate funding needs could increase.

    CLOCK TICKING FOR LA CAIXA

Like Spain's two largest banks Santander and BBVA , banking group La Caixa does not need external aid, but analysts and sources said it was just a matter of time before the Catalan powerhouse also unwinds stakes.

"Caixabank isn't stressed to the extent that the others are, but they obviously will have to find capital, either through business as usual or selling stakes," said one banking source. "But the days of industrial holdings is nearing its end."

Despite a strong balance sheet, La Caixa will need fresh funds to meet tough new provisioning requirements under a local and global drive for banks to raise capital.

For decades La Caixa has been kingmaker of a vast empire, stretching from 37 percent of utility Gas Natural to 28 percent of tollway firm Abertis , 12.8 percent of Repsol and 5.1 percent of Telefonica, and including stakes in banks such as Austria's Erste and Portugal's BPI.

Some of the stakes, long considered sacred, are held through its listed unit Caixabank .

"I definitely don't see Caixabank selling now or soon; they're going wait. But in the next cycle it's hard to see them increasing exposure to equity holdings in corporates other than as a result of bankruptcies," Barton of CM Capital Markets said.

A flock of "vulture" funds is already watching over the banking sector shakeout in the hope that it will finally deliver a bonanza of distressed company assets at rock bottom prices.

Fearing the fallout, Spain's ruling People's Party took steps early in June to protect strategic companies such as Repsol from opportunistic takeovers by proposing an amendment to bring back a limit on voting rights.

But as Spain's economic crisis draws out, with unemployment climbing above 24 percent and a recession seen lasting through this year, investors still feel that anything they can buy today can be had even cheaper tomorrow.

"People are aware that sales are taking place, and they are watching. But the overriding emotion on Spanish assets right now is not 'I have got to hurry or I will lose it,'" the banking source said.

FBI: 79 teen prostitutes taken off streets

FBI Operation Cross Country has rescued 79 children, victims of child prostitution and arrested 104 pimps nationwide.

    By Jeff Black, msnbc.com

A three-day sweep by police agencies across the country has led to the removal of 79 teenagers from a life of prostitution and the arrest of more than a hundred pimps, the FBI reported on Tuesday.

Hundreds of FBI agents and thousands of state and local?law-enforcement officers?targeted the Internet as well as such places as truck stops, casinos and "tracks"?where prostitutes are known to walk the street in the crackdown.

The teenagers -- 77 girls and two boys -- ranged in age from 13 to 17. They are being held in custody until they could be placed with child welfare organizations, Reuters reported.

The FBI said 104 suspected pimps were arrested during sting operations in 57 U.S. cities including Atlanta, Sacramento, and Toledo, Ohio.?

It was the sixth nationwide sweep -- called Operation Cross Country -- organized as part of the FBI?s Innocence Lost National Initiative to address the growing problem of child sex trafficking in the United States.

Information gleaned from those arrested often uncovers organized prostitution rings, the FBI said.

"It is clear that child prostitution and sex trafficking do not just occur somewhere else on the other side of the world," Ernie Allen, president of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, a partner in the effort, said in a news release. "These insidious crimes are occurring in American cities and the victims are American kids."?

The average age of a child targeted for prostitution in the United States is between 11 and 14 years old, FBI assistant director Kevin L. Perkins told the Senate Judiciary Committee in March.

Police: Mother forced daughter into prostitution

The youngest victim ever recovered through Innocence Lost was 9, FBI spokesman Jason Pack told msnbc.com.

Since 2003, Innocence Lost task forces and work groups have taken more than 2,200 children off the streets, leading to?1,017 convictions, the FBI said.

Perhaps the highest profile case was the 2005 "Precious Cargo" investigation that targeted pimps involved in sex trafficking of children and female adults at trucks stops in Harrisburg, Pa. More than 150 victims were identified, 45 of whom had been identified as being exploited as children. In all, 18 people were indicted on federal crimes in that investigation. The ring leaders, Terrance Williams, aka "Sleazy T," and Eric Kays, aka "International Ross," were both sent to prison for more than 35 years.

People can report suspected sexual exploitation of children at cybertipline.com, or call?1-800-843-5678.

NJ Assembly approves social media protections

Two measures aimed at stopping employers and schools from asking for social media passwords have been approved by the New Jersey Assembly.

Lawmakers voted 75-0 on Monday for the school-related protections and 77-0 for the employee-related measure.

The bills would prohibit employers, colleges and universities from requiring current or prospective employees or students to disclose user names or passwords for social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. They also would prohibit asking them if they have an account on a social media or networking site.

Business groups have expressed concern about the measures leading to expensive lawsuits. They also want exceptions for investigating claims against employees, like insider trading or sexual harassment.

The Senate has not yet considered the measures.

Pain Management: Open Communication Is Part Of ... - Health Articles

There are many different types of suffering caused by the pains we all have. Back problems, shoulders aches and other maladies will make for a dangerous situation in a lot of day to day activities. Pain management Peabody patients want to have on their side will take several forms as well. Their medical providers will work within several levels for the relieving of this concern.

The first level will be a simple course of anti-inflammatory drugs. Depending on the seriousness, they may or may not be prescription strength. This will be followed by behavior treatment, exercise and physical therapy. Rest and proper nutrition is also suggested as many afflictions are brought on by many things.

A nerve block is among the treatments in level two of this maintenance. It will block the sensation of the pain and can provide relief for quite some time. An electrical pulse machine, known as a TENS unit, will accomplish the same thing, giving the medical personnel a little more time to diagnose and treat.

Level three maintenance will see increasingly more complicated treatments coming into play. These will include spinal cord stimulators and, as a last resort, surgery. There are also pumping units that can keep a level of medications flowing and electrical signals that will help mask this in the end stages of cancer and other maladies.

The surgery that is part of this third level of pain maintenance can cause the patient to become ache free finally, however, there is a high risk of failure for some of these procedures. It is important to note, again, that this suffering is different for different people. No one reacts the same way and some treatments may not work at all for some people.

The most important element of pain management Peabody patients must adhere to is that communication with your medical manager must be followed up on at all times. The hurting that you are experiencing needs to be discussed as openly as possible for anything to be effective. Of course, your doctor?s instructions must be followed, as much as possible, to the letter.

While leaks, rumors, and vaguely sourced reports should always be taken with a large dash of salt, there's been a lot of consistency regarding this particular device. We wouldn't be surprised if we saw it in a couple of days, at the Google I/O keynote in San Francisco, from where we'll be reporting live.

James A. Shapiro: Experimental Evolution: How Can We Watch Natural Genetic Engineering in Real Time?

I have argued that natural genetic engineering is the real creative process in evolutionary innovation. A central but undocumented feature of my argument is that cells can coordinate separate DNA-change events to produce functional new genome structures. How can experimentalists test this argument?

The experiments will probably involve microorganisms, such as bacteria or yeast. A standard procedure for measuring microbial DNA change (mutation) is to place the microbes in a petri dish where they cannot grow into colonies, count the number of cells deposited, incubate them for a period of time, and count the number of colonies that appear. Each colony arose from a mutational event that overcame whatever prevented growth (e.g., inability to utilize the nutrients provided or to synthesize a needed biochemical). The ratio of colonies to cells placed on the growth medium is the mutant frequency. We can measure how various treatments, such as UV irradiation, change this frequency.

Mutation experiments generally look for changes at a single location in the genome. With modern DNA-sequencing technology, the precise changes are easy to identify. Colonies typically appear two to three days after the appropriate DNA change has occurred. In most cases studied, suitable mutations occur in the population prior to plating. Examining the petri dishes after two or three days indicates the frequency of preexisting mutations.

Longer incubation of the selection plates often produces a large increase in the number of colonies. This indicates that mutations continue to occur under selection conditions. By counting these colonies and analyzing the population dynamics of the selected bacteria, we can determine whether selection affects the process of genome change.

When selection significantly stimulates mutations above prior levels, the process is called "adaptive mutation." Molecular geneticists agree that adaptive mutation (observed in different microorganisms) occurs when selective stress triggers natural genetic engineering activities that carry out DNA changes allowing mutated cells to form colonies.

In some cases, we know the consensus interpretation is correct. Together with my colleague Genevieve Maenhaut-Michel, I confirmed this. We studied an experimental situation where the required DNA change (a special type of coding sequence fusion) was never detected during normal growth but increased at least 100,000-fold after selection.

Other groups confirmed selection stress triggering natural genetic engineering by detecting evidence of "induced hypermutation" at various locations throughout the genome and by direct measurement of mutator function.

It is likely that more complex changes can be triggered by selection conditions. My colleague Bernhard Hauer worked for many years at the large German chemical company BASF. In order to produce certain specialty biochemicals, BASF used microbes. But often the good producer organisms would only grow on expensive nutrients. So Bernhard simply plated them on medium containing economic nutrients, waited for a month or so, and harvested the late-appearing colonies. Unfortunately, this was before the days of rapid sequencing, and we do not know what kinds of DNA changes occurred in the long time before the colonies finally appeared.

In order to look for coordinated natural genetic engineering at multiple locations, one approach is to repeat what Bernhard did but start with well-defined strains. We know that coding sequences that lack transcription signals can be activated by the upstream insertion of mobile elements in bacteria and yeast.

The strategy is to engineer strains that could only grow when multiple mobile element insertions activated several different coding sequences. For example, these sequences might encode proteins needed at various steps of a metabolic pathway (for nutrient utilization or for biosynthesis). Selection for activation of all the sequences together simply involves placing the microbes on a medium where the whole pathway is essential for growth, and then waiting for colonies to appear.

If the initial experiment was to prove successful and colonies did eventually appear, it would be essential to exclude alternative explanations and quantify the coordination. The most important control would be to show that no single activation event led to slow growth on the selection medium. Such growth could enable other activation events to occur independently later during proliferation.

Measuring the individual frequency of each single activating event over the time it took for the combined changes to appear helps quantify the degree of coordination. The expected frequency of truly independent changes would be the multiplied product of the individual frequencies. If the frequency of selecting all the changes at once turned out to be significantly higher than this multiple, there would be evidence for a coordinating process.

To learn how coordination operates, two standard approaches are applicable. One is to sequence the genomes of the individually and coordinately activated strains. Are the DNA changes the same or not? For example, if distinct mobile elements activated individual versus multiple coding sequences, we could conclude that different triggering processes occurred in the two cases.

The second standard approach is to ask if particular control functions are essential for coordinated change to occur. In the case of the starvation-induced coding sequence fusion that Genevieve and I studied in E. coli, we and others demonstrated the roles of regulatory proteases and transcription factors. To identify components of the control network is the first step to figuring out how it operates.

The approach I just suggested is relatively straightforward microbial molecular genetics. It would document cell capacity to generate an expression network by coordinated DNA changes at multiple locations in the genome. I feel confident that it will succeed. It would open a new chapter in experimental evolution.
