Love is in the air and romance is no longer a hush-hush in dating China. All over the Mainland China the old customs are giving way to the new. Dramatic changes have happened in China?s economy, politics and now society. Chinese date resembles western dates with men serenading women with roses and chocolates. The Dating China scene is seeing romance bloom as early as in high school.
Now a Chinese date is becoming more daring than a Western one with its outburst of public displays of romance and affection. Westerners are watching with gaping mouths at this trend.

This are now increasing popular dating sites sprouting up all throughout china, sites such as Jiayuan.com is the biggest and most popular dating website of China, owning over 40 million registered members by the end of April 2011. Besides online dating, the website features various real-life blind-dating activities. This kind of dating pattern is welcomed by singles in metropolis.

This is mainly because open dating in China is such a contrast to the traditional China. Romantic relationships were rare and marriage was a mere social contract between the families of the marrying couple. Dating was simply unknown.
From ancient times, it was very important to follow custom of the ?Three Letters and ?Three Etiquettes? for a marriage.

  • The ?Three Letters? included: 1) The Betrothal Letter, which is the formal document of the engagement, 2) The Gift Letter which contains a list of gift for the wedding and 3) The Wedding Letter, this is the final document prepared and presented to the bride?s family on the day of the wedding and was to confirm the formal acceptance of the bride into the bridegroom?s family.
  • The ?Three Etiquettes? included: 1) A Proposal by a matchmaker on behalf of the boy to the girl?s family, 2) The Astrological birthday pairing and 3) The girls parents would be presented with exotic gifts such as lotus seed and the bridal cake.

The Dating China scene today, reflects an easing of the traditional pressure of parents on their adolescent children to settle down. Chinese men and women are able to enter into relationships before they finally settle down in their late twenties. Chinese date may have opened out and become liberal but has still to cross some boundaries.
Dating China still frowns on interracial dating unlike their sub-continent neighbors the Japanese and the South Koreans ? a chinese ? black or a chinese ? caucasian relationship is a no-no. It is also not yet open to the idea of same sex relationships -Gay and Lesbian.
