PODCAST: Early Childhood Education Important for Successful Life ...

Early childhood education is important and United Way ? in collaboration with our partners - works on helping children succeed. Today?s United Way Podcast with Education Expert Jennifer Sullivan focuses on how the 2008 flood has impacted daycares in the flood zone and how that has impacted early childhood education.

1)????? How has the flood impacted daycares?

During the flood? and the immediate recovery ? 2008

  • Flood affected day care providers faced many changed in the wake of the floods, from:
    • Attempting to find funding for repairs
    • Challenges from having to relocate their facilities
    • Providing adequate services to children and their families during a? difficult transition

2)????? And today what does the picture look like?

Although some have bounced back, many still faces challenges today:

  1. For many, FEMA dollars did not cover the cost of their lost equipment and supplies
  2. Many folks moved after the flood; and their client base in no longer there
  3. Many home providers not only lost their homes; they lost their businesses and their incomes, too (Of the 32 home providers in the flood zone, only 1 is up and running today)
  4. For those who were able to stay in business, they have concerns about the interruption in service that these children and families experienced and the long term impact that may have on the child?s development

And Iowa Child Care Resource & Referral? had indicated that there was a 25% drop in the number of care provider post flood ? for a variety of reason, not just flood related. But because there are fewer care providers available and waitlists at many facilities, it has forced many families into other care arrangements. So we have seen an increase in the number of informal caregiver arrangements? or what we call family friends and neighbor care.

3)????? Why is United Way interested in this topic?

Because quality childcare remains a priority, United Way has responded by investing funds in early childhood initiatives? we partner with local agencies to help our young ones develop the knowledge and skills they need to be ready for kindergarten ?specially in the areas of early literacy and language, social emotional well being? and physical and cognitive growth. We do that by focusing our investments in three key areas ? in child development ? by helping them develop the skills they need to be ready for school; by investing in parent education and family support programs, and by investing in programs that help enhance the quality of the early child care environments that we place our children in.

At the end of the day, our goals are to get our young ones the skills they need to be ready for school and our youth the skills they need to be successful beyond high school. And we believe that with your support, we can all help the children in our community achieve their full potential ? no matter their life circumstances ? so they are better prepared to succeed in college, work and life.
