Gartner Inc, a giant in the research field, estimates that only one out of seven hundred people who commit identity fraud ever gets brought to justice. In Medford Oregon recently they apparently found the one. The Associated Press reported one one identity theft criminal that arrived at a local bank to cash a check. What makes this story so bizarre is the thief was caught by the person he had been victimizing. Apparantly they were in the same bank at the exact same time as the thief. The victim was there ironically enough to dispute the previous bogus charges.

Unfortunately for many others who have had their identity stolen there's no chance of them coming face to face with the thief and by some miracle apprehending them. Identity fraud is a crime that affects over 8 million people per year. While check fraud and other forms of identity theft have seen a sharp dropoff others such as phishing websites are rising at record levels. The breakneck speed of technological innovations is making identity theft easier and easier.

The ability to steal personal information has also reached cell phone users where downloading certain apps can result in sensitive data you've stored in your phone getting hijacked and sent to remote servers where thieves are waiting to record that information such as online banking logins and password.

The good thing is there are resources out there which can be of great assistance. In 1998 The U.S. Congress passed the Identity Theft and Assumption Deterrence Act. This made identity theft a federal offense and with it comes harsher penalties any time identity thieves are seized and found guilty.

It also put the Federal Trade Commission commonly referred to as the FTC at the vanguard of combating identity theft. The FTC and in particular their internet site is loaded with information and facts including prevention, video and news item updates. Over the last 10 years they've done a remarkable job in their work to teach the general public on exactly how engraved this crime has become in this country as well as the measures essential to protect against it.

A key component was the development of the Identity Theft Clearinghouse data bank. It is an online repository designed to help local and federal law enforcement officials. Each and every complaints regarding identity theft are promptly recorded into the data bank which is kept up to date constantly.

One final thing this legislation has done to help consumers with any credit issues they may have trouble resolving. Even when they are fully aware you've been the victim of identity fraud credit agencies for reasons all their own are still slow to act in the case of eliminating it from your personal records. This process can sometimes get expedited when you have the federal government backing you up.
