Sarah's Slim-Down: Week one of Inferno

Sarah's Slim-Down

Ever wonder if a diet plan's claims are for real? We sure do ? so we've decided to put health and diet plans to the test, starting with DailyBurn.com's Inferno program. Is it too good to be true?

Sarah -- Week 1

When you write about health, many emails come across your desk promising a new and can't-miss weight loss plan -- especially in January. But do any of them actually work? That's always a thought, and honestly I carry a good deal of skepticism.

Sarah's stats

Height: 5 feet 6 inches

Weight: 194 pounds

Here at SheKnows, we decided to test one after an email came across promising "10 Tips to Lose 10 Pounds in a Month." Being 10 pounds lighter would be amazing. Did you know that five pounds of fat is roughly the size of a football? Crazy but true. I would love to be two footballs lighter next month.

The truth is that I am overweight by about 45 pounds, and I need to do something about it. After two pregnancies and a very stressful year, I've reached a way-higher-than-I'm-comfortable-with weight. I am uncomfortable and want to fit into my favorite clothes again. I am ready to shed some serious weight.

The 10 tips

These are the 10 tips I will be following, provided by a spokeswoman for DailyBurn.com.

1

Drink a protein shake
for breakfast

Goodbye whole-grain toast and eggs! I'll be trading my normal breakfast for a protein shake. (Um, yay?) Why? "Eating protein in the morning will help you stay full and satisfied until your next meal," reads the tip list.

Everyone should be doing this one. It's no secret that hydration is important, so I'll be upping the ante on my daily water-drinking?? starting with two glasses first thing in the morning.

3

Take the
Inferno challenge

So, there's this workout plan called Inferno. It's a new high-intensity fat-burner workout program from DailyBurn.com. And I will be doing it. According to the tip sheet? "Fitness trainer Anja Garcia will take you to your limit and then push you past it. In just 21 days, you?ll see your muscles start to pop as your fat melts away." Oh my.

4

Get off the cardio machines and start strength training

I've always tried to do a mix of cardio and strength training, but truth be told I find strength training boring, so I totally dread it. But the plan says this is important so I'm totally going for it. The reasoning makes sense: "To lose weight, you want your body to become inefficient in a sense, because you want your body to burn your own fat for fuel." Burn, baby, burn.

5

Turn off your computer/TV one hour before bedtime

Confession: I have a hard time falling asleep without the TV on. My family has been through a lot in the last few months, and the noise helps me shut out my thoughts. But I am going to give this a try since it promises some good things: "Quality sleep helps aid in muscle recovery and fat metabolism."

According to the plan, snacking is just fine (Yay!) as long as you are snacking on nutritious things?? like nuts, veggies and hummus instead of candy and chips. That I can totally do.

7

Don?t eat in front
of a screen

When I read this one, I was tempted to pretend I didn't see it. I am all about the multitasking, so lunch is often eaten while working (in front of the computer), reading (hello, Kindle!) or watching a little daytime TV (GH! My favorite!). But apparently that makes you not pay attention to what you are eating. "Visual cues help your body regulate how much you should eat."

8

Feel the difference between craving and hunger

When you've been stress eating (which admittedly I am guilty of), you forget the feeling of hunger?? which is actually a pleasant and affirming thing (ahem, you should totally feel hunger). But cravings? Those are different?? and they need to be controlled (something I have never been great at). "You feel true hunger in your stomach, but you feel cravings in your brain. Just because you want to eat something doesn?t mean that your body is truly hungry. Learn to distinguish between the two and you?ll discover that most of your mindless eating is to satisfy emotional cravings."

Like water, fiber is one of those important and necessary things. "Fiber helps flush out your digestive system by keeping food moving through your intestines. It also acts as a scrubber to your intestinal wall, along with adding bulk in your intestines, which helps move food along." So somewhere in there, I need to get more of it.

This one is pretty easy, honestly, since this plan presents so much of a challenge for me. And that's good: "Your body will never shed weight it if feels comfortable." No worries there.

Ready to start

One of the reasons I was so excited to get started on this is that I am accountable to you, the lovely readers. I know you'll be looking to see how this goes?? and I hope that the results will delight us all. And we're off!

Awareness Of Health & Fitness Propels The Sports Category ...

A new research report titled "Sports and Fitness Nutrition Foods and Drinks: A Global Strategic Business Report" by Global Industry Analysts, Inc., San Jose, CA, documents a comprehensive review of market, trends, issues, product overview, recent industry activity and profiles of major companies worldwide. The analysis provides market estimates and projections for product segments including Sports/Energy Foods and Sports/Energy Drinks.
?
According to the report, the role of sports nutrition products has witnessed a paradigm shift from ?muscle building? to one that promotes wellness and disease prevention. A fitness-crazy generation and the good-health image of sports drinks are factors driving growth in sports/energy drinks and sports/energy bars segments. Additionally, sports beverages are increasingly being used as refreshment drinks, which are further fuelling demand for these products in the marketplace. Presently, sports and energy bars are one of the fastest growing segments. Consumers who are on the move, or are too busy to have a proper meal are now more inclined towards sports and energy bars as healthy food alternatives.
?
Despite recovery from the impact of the global economic recession, uncertainty over stability of this recovery continues to persist. The Euro-zone sovereign debt crisis is proving to be a potential threat to market stability and global growth prospects. Sluggish recovery rates had a negative impact on the European economic growth and added to the macroeconomic uncertainties globally. In such pensive economic conditions, manufacturers of sports nutrition products find it extremely tricky to chalk-out near-term business expansion plans. The gloomy economic conditions are likely to reduce consumer spending and turn purchasing habits towards cheaper and economical alternatives. Further, financial shortfalls of suppliers and customers are likely to delay product introductions and aggravate inventory challenges. A large number of products in the sports nutrition market are premium products, and in a scenario where consumers are cutting down on unnecessary expenditure, it would be extremely difficult for manufacturers to generate profits out of the luxury and value-added product segments.
?
Sports and Energy Drinks market is no longer considered a niche segment in the beverage industry, with usage confined only to athletes and persons engaged in physical exercises and sports. The scenario has radically changed, with majority demand generated by active lifestyle users, keen on staying fit. Sports/energy drinks account for a massive chunk of the sports nutrition products market and are slowly foraying into the larger beverage market and are now becoming a part of the mainstream cluster. Major sports drink companies such as Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, are launching aggressive advertising campaigns to promote brands and capture attention of health conscious consumers. Energy beverage makers are also aware of demands of active lifestyle users while bringing about innovations in their product lines. Sales in energy and sports drink segment are also being driven by growing number of product introductions promising natural ingredients that offer long lasting and sustainable energy benefits.
?
Sports and energy bars, part of the effervescent Sports and Energy Foods category, represents one of the fastest growing markets, as consumers are turning busier day-by-day and are more impulsive towards their purchases of meals or meal replacements. Bars are mainly used as meal replacement snacks, which can provide quick medium of replenishing energy levels of the body. Ever since energy bars were first invented, efforts have been concentrated to develop products keeping in mind nutritional needs of both athletic and active lifestyle users. PowerBar, a pioneer in the food and energy bars business has played a revolutionary role in the category. Popular distributors of nutrition bars are food stores that garnered a big chunk of the market share. Drugstores are also the fast emerging distribution option in the bar category.
?
As stated by the new market research report on Sports and Fitness Nutrition Foods and Drinks, the U.S. constitutes the largest market worldwide. Favorable demographics, aging baby boomers and a sedentary lifestyle are the major growth promoters of the fitness industry in the country. The sports nutrition market witnessed exponential growth over the years due to new innovations, novel packaging and marked changes in consumer preferences. Sports supplements and sports nutrition functional foods are among the leading categories exhibiting strong growth. Latin America represents the fastest growing regional market displaying a CAGR of about 9.5% over the analysis period. Despite accounting for a small portion to the world?s food and beverage market, Latin America is expected to emerge as the hotspot in the coming years. The market for sports and energy drinks in Latin America is expected to surge in the near future primarily due to rising income levels, increased focus on health and wellness and willingness of consumers to spend on the category.
?
Major players profiled in the report include Abbott Laboratories Inc., Coca-Cola Co., Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc., GlaxoSmithKline Plc., GNC Holdings Inc., Monster Beverage Corporation, Optimum Nutrition Inc., PepsiCo Inc., The Balance Bar Company, Red Bull GmbH, and Rockstar Inc., among others.

Goodell: Some don't recognize bounties must end

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says his biggest regret about the New Orleans Saints' bounty scandal is that he can't get everyone to recognize bounties need to be eliminated from the game.

Goodell said he hasn't been able to make the point clearly enough with the players' union and others that the league will not tolerate pay for hard hits.

He said the league, coaches, executives and players all share the responsibility for eliminating bounties from football.

He vowed to be "incredibly relentless" about pushing the point moving forward.

Maxthon Cloud Browser

"That's cool!" The more I use this little-known browser from the East, the more times that phrase enters my mind. Maxthon 3 was already quite a distinctive entry among the common run of browsers, with things like a media download detector and a night-vision mode that darkens the webpage to save your eyes. But its latest major release, dubbed Maxthon Cloud Brower, takes that uniqueness a step further, with a clever new user interface resembling the clean look of Windows 8 and even more tools for getting the most out of the Web. To boot, Maxthon scores very high in both speed benchmarks and new-standards support. In a world dominated by Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Firefox, let's see whether Maxthon has what it takes to entice away a few users.

One caveat before we get going in earnest: This latest version of Maxthon is technically still at the release candidate stage; the fully sanctioned version will launch next month. But it is the primary browser version being currently offered on Maxthon's site, and it performed without a hitch during testing. I'll do a reality check on benchmarking when the actual final code is realeased.

Signup and Setup
A small 300K download gets you started with Maxthon's simple one-step Windows installer, which both downloads and installs the application. A "Preparing to launch Maxthon" dialog took several seconds before I got my first look at the redesigned browser. The new installation replaced my previous one rather than running side by side, and my preferences were maintained. The Advanced link in the installer dropped down some installation options that might better be more at the surface, such as Set as default browser and Create Taskbar shortcut. At least the Join UEIP (User Experience Improvement Program) check box was blank, which sends usage info to Maxthon to help them fix the software. Maxthon versions are available for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS.

Interface
One of the most striking things about the look of this redesigned browser is that it dispenses with the standard window border and minimize, resize, and exit buttons at top right. Oh they're there, but only when you move the mouse over the vestigial, truncated, non-distracting buttons in the place the standard ones would be. Though small touch, it's an innovative UI idea that removes distraction.

Another brilliant little touch is that the search box enlarges when you click in it, so that normally the page address has more space. The previous version's excess of toolbar items has also been cleaned up in version 4: now there are just six, compared with nine before. But you can still get to all the functions you could before, in a dropdown menu accessible from the list icon on the right.

The placeholder smiley face button still graces the top-left corner of the window, but tapping it no longer drops down a huge panel of options. Instead, a more modest menu drops from a list-like icon on the right. The smilie merely takes you to a login dialog for Maxthon Passport, which changes the smilie to your user photo and adds easy access to social networks. Below your user pic is a narrow sidebar column of buttons for Favorites, Downloads, RSS feeds, and Sky Notes (more on these in a bit). You can add to this button sidebar using extensions.

As with Firefox and Opera, but not Chrome or IE, Maxthon still keeps the search box separate from the address box?a privacy advantage, since the address+search box combination sends every URL you enter to the search provider. As with any browser these days, if you type something in the address box that's not a URL, you can still search or see matching favorites or history if you enable this in settings. On page is well and clearly handled, with result highlighting.

Finally, gone for Maxthon 4 is version 3's skinning capability. Other browsers such as Chrome and Firefox to an even greater extent still let you dress up the browser interface with window border background colors and texture themes. I think Facebook's crushing of MySpace has taught the world that people prefer simplicity and clarity over lots of personal interface customization.

Cloud Syncing and the Start Page
Maxthon already offered some cloud features and syncing, including the ability to synchronize bookmarks, options, the address bar, new-tab links, and Magic Fill passwords among all Maxthon instances you're logged into. You could also sync notes on any computer or device you use to log into Maxthon; you can do the same for. New for this Cloud Browser Tab syncing is now built into the browser; before it required an extension.

The biggest additions are Cloud download and Push. With the first, when you're at a website offering a file download, you can download to the cloud instead of to your local machine, making the download available from any of your Maxthon instances. Of course, you're actually uploading the download to your private Maxthon cloud. One problem with this feature, though, was that I couldn't actually download the files to my iPhone, even if they were common types the phone could handle, such as JPGs. I could just see a list of what was uploaded.

To push the current page to your other devices running Maxthon, you click the same Plus Sign in the address bar used to Favorite the page. When I clicked Cloud Push to? a dialog showed entries for all the other machines and mobile devices I'd set up with my Maxthon Cloud Sync. Ticking the button for my iPhone caused a notification to appear on the phone that linked to the page I'd pushed. If I already had Maxthon open on the iPhone, my pushed page simply loaded. Pretty cool, but maybe more useful would be to send these to other people?which you can do with Cloud Push's Share with friends tab using email or even, wait for it: SMS text message!

The other new cloud feature is Cloud Tabs, which, just like it sounds, show what tabs are open on any of your devices and computers running Maxthon. For both desktop and mobile browsers, you have to go to the new tab page to see each device's tab set. Unlike Firefox's tab syncing, however, it doesn't actually replicate the tab set on the second machine, but it does show tabs open on each device, and each machine's set has an "open all" choice.

New survey outlines funding deficiency in brain and eye disease research

Clarksburg, Md. BrightFocus Foundation, a nonprofit organization that funds research worldwide to save sight and mind, today released the results of a survey of more than 170 leading biomedical scientists that explores the most significant barriers to progress in ending brain and eye diseases. The survey indicates that a lack of dependable funding is threatening to create a deficit of highly skilled scientists at a time when the nation could soon face a health care crisis brought on by devastating disorders like Alzheimer's, macular degeneration, and glaucoma.

"Cures for these brain and eye diseases can be found if we give researchers the resources and tools they require," said Stacy Haller, president and chief executive officer of BrightFocus Foundation, formerly named American Health Assistance Foundation. "Nearly 20 million people in the U.S. are affected by Alzheimer's disease, macular degeneration, or glaucoma. That number is climbing with an aging population, threatening our families, our health care, and our economy. Eradicating these diseases should be a much higher national priority."

The new survey taps into the attitudes and opinions of more than 170 top brain and eye disease scientists from around the world who have received foundation research grants in recent years. Respondents expressed near-consensus on the impact that funding sources play in their field:

  • 94 percent agreed that a lack of federal funding for brain and eye disease research is impeding scientific discoveries.
  • 91 percent agreed that a lack of research funding is driving scientists from the field.
  • 96 percent identified limited funding as a top barrier to entry for new scientists in the fields of brain and eye disease research.

"By now, it should be clear that the cost of adequately supporting efforts to prevent and treat cognitive and vision diseases is minuscule compared to the cost of failing to do so," said Guy Eakin, Ph.D., vice president of Scientific Affairs for BrightFocus Foundation. "The total U.S. health care cost for Alzheimer's alone is $200 billion annually and is expected to soar to $1.1 trillion per year by 2050 if we don't have the scientific discoveries made possible by research funding. Yet budget cuts for research continue, and we're losing the talents of a generation of scientists."

Film review: 'Warm Bodies' brings life to zombie and romance ...

This film image released by Summit Entertainment shows Nicholas Hoult, left, and Teresa Palmer in a scene from "Warm Bodies." (AP Photo/Summit Entertainment, Jonathan Wenk)

It?s a toss-up which genre more needs the adrenaline boost "Warm Bodies" provides: the zombie movie or the romantic comedy.

This hybrid follows R (Nicholas Hoult), an undead young man who still maintains some vague memories of life before the zombie infestation that?s turned most of America into slow-moving undead. The zombies are split between "corpses" like R and his pal M (Rob Corddry), who try to hold on to a semblance of humanity, and "skeletons" (aka "bonies") who are just ruthless flesh-eating monsters.

?

HHH

?Warm Bodies?

Opens Friday, Feb. 1, at theaters everywhere; rated PG-13 for zombie violence and some language; 97 minutes.

When R encounters the pretty and feisty Julie (Teresa Palmer), whose father (John Malkovich) commands the last human outpost, R has his first stirrings of human emotion ? while also eating the brains of Julie?s boyfriend Perry (Dave Franco), thus reliving Perry?s memories and feelings. Soon, R?s crush on Julie starts to affect the other zombies, signaling a change that could bring peace to the raging human-zombie war.

Director-screenwriter Jonathan Levine ("50/50"), adapting Isaac Marion?s novel, plays with zombie-movie conventions (using R?s funny and observational voice-over) and steals some moves from Shakespeare to create a teen romance no more awkward than most.

Hoult ("X-Men: First Class") and Palmer (who?s like Kristen Stewart, except blond and capable of smiling) have a chemistry that brings this zombie story to life.
