Weight Watchers Earns its High Ranking (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | At some point or another, it's likely that you or someone you know has tried one of the dozens of fad diets available. Extreme dieters have tried many, finding some to work better than others. After evaluating 25 diets with health experts, U.S. News has ranked some of the most popular ones according to nutrition, safety and effectiveness with weight loss and heart health. The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) Diet was ranked first over more well-known diets, like Atkins, Zone, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem and Weight Watchers.

Like many moms, I have tried several diets to shed the last of the baby weight. I tried Nutrisystem after my first son was born because I received a special discounted offer. I was only on the diet for a few weeks, and the only reason I lost a few pounds was because the food was terrible. I resorted to counting calories rather than trying to force it down, and I gave away the leftover food. Another downside is that the diet is extremely expensive at around $300 a month. It is no shocker that Nutrisystem was ranked No. 12 by U.S. News.

After my second son arrived two years ago, I found more success with Weight Watchers. I was able to join eight weeks after the birth, and the program really helped me adopt a healthier lifestyle. The flexibility of the program meant I was never hungry, I could still eat my favorite foods and I was able to lose my baby weight in a matter of months. At less than $20 a month for the online version, it's one of the most economical plans out there.

Since Weight Watchers is considered a lifestyle change over a diet, I am still using the tools I learned. It is not difficult to stick to, as long as you are consistent with tracking points and accurate portion control. I really believe it promotes a healthy lifestyle instead of the extreme dieting other plans encourage. U.S. News gave it the No. 3 spot because it's easy to follow and effective with long-term weight loss.
