From Brad Johnson, Director of Marketing and Communications WILMORE, KY (WAVE) - Sand artist Joe Castillo will bring the talent that captivated thousands of viewers this past summer through the television hit, ?America?s Got Talent,? to Asbury University on Dec. 7. Castillo will present a multi-media performance called ?The Miracle of Christmas,? in the historic Hughes Auditorium at 7 p.m. The University is providing the event free and open to the public, but seating is limited (1,500-seat auditorium). Guests must print and bring their tickets to the event. ?It?s a joy to be able to share Joe?s creative ministry with the community,? said Asbury University President Sandra Gray. ?We look forward to sharing with the community his extraordinary talent to present the familiar Christmas story, in a way that will inspire and refresh our hearts with the true meaning of the Christ's birth.? As a child, Castillo grew up immersed in the arts in Mexico City through his parents ? his mother taught painting, and his father owned a graphic design and display company. The family moved to the United States after his father died, and Castillo went on to establish an advertising agency in Tennessee, where he worked for nearly 20 years. Along the way, however, he had encountered the gospel at a Christian youth camp in Mexico and developed a passion for telling the stories of Jesus through art. He created WordStory?, a ministry in which he used his writing, teaching and artwork to impact youth camps and churches, and ArtStory?, a technique for illustrating Biblical stories by creating 4-foot-by-8-foot murals of the passages in front of a live audience. SandStory? was created when Castillo made an early-spring trip to a hardware store and started thinking about the tracks and patterns created by shoppers walking through a bag of sand that had spilled on the floor. Some tinkering led to a unique artistic outlet in which he uses a light table, sand, a projector and a large screen to create impactful, fluid illustrations set to dramatic music. No stranger to Wilmore, Castillo holds two degrees from Asbury Theological Seminary and lives in Richmond, Ky.
